Who or what should never be honored?
Proverbs
Is there anyone or anytime a person should never be honored?
Who or what should never be honored?
Proverbs
Persons in the Bible who have no honor or who are not to be honored include, but are not limited to: the person of the mighty, King Uzziah, and anyone who is a fool.

. . . Generally, I limit my answers to what the Bible SAYS or what it clearly teaches when all relevant passages are considered. However, other persons who are not to be honored would obviously include: any man or woman with the spirit of antichirst, evildoers, workers of abominable and detestable things, false prophets and teachers, anyone whom the Lord does not honor, etc.

. . . NOTE: The Bible warns us, in Jude verses 8-10, not to revile nor prounounce "railing judgment" against "angelic majesties." Verse 9 (NASB): But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil...did not dare to pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!" (This does not imply that we should honor the devil, but that we should NOT pronounce a railing judgment against him.)

. . . I do not claim that this list is complete or that it includes EVERY person the Bible forbids us to honor. In the Bible there are other persons whom the Lord himself does not honor. This is merely the partial results of an online search in one concordance in one version of the Bible. "Partial results" means verses which did not seem to apply to your question were omitted from this list.

. . . The following are some of the results of an online search (in a concordance in the OT, New King James Version) for verses containing the words "honor" and "not."

. . . Le 19:15 'You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor.

. . . 2Ch 26:18 And they withstood King Uzziah, and said to him, "It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Get out of the sanctuary, for you have trespassed! You shall have no honor from the Lord God."

. . . Pr 26:1 As snow in summer and rain in harvest, So honor is not fitting for a fool. . . .

  What does Proverbs 11:22 mean?
Proverbs
The Israelites despised swine as filthy creatures, so putting a gold ring in the pig's snout was a waste of gold. A beautiful woman without morals is a waste as well, to be avoided as one avoids a pig (with or without a gold nose ring).

In answer to your question, please note:

. . . 1) Several Bible commentaries are available online.

. . . 2) More than a dozen English translations of the Bible are available online.

. . . 3) Prov 11:22 "*ring of gold.* A nose ring was an ornament intended to beautify a woman in OT times. It was as out of place in a pig's nose as the lack of discretion was in a lovely lady" (p. 892, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997).
HOW CAN ONE LIVE WITH A QUARRELSOME WIFE
Proverbs
I WILL LIKE TO HAVE AN EXPLANATION ON THE SCRIPTURE IN PROVERBS WHICH SAYS THAT IT IS BETTER TO STAY IN THE CORNER OF THE ROOF OF YOUR HOUSE THAN TO LIVE WITH A QUARRELSOME WIFE.
HOW CAN ONE LIVE WITH A QUARRELSOME WIFE
Proverbs
Proverbs 21:19 states, "It is better to live in a desert land Than with a contentious and vexing woman."

Proverbs 27:15 states, "A constant dripping on a day of steady rain And a contentious woman are alike;" (compare with Proverbs 19:13)

MacArthur's Study Bibles states, "An obstinate, argumentative woman is literally like a leak so unrelenting that one has to run from it or go mad. Here are two ways to devastate a man: an ungodly son and an irritating wife."

However, Proverbs 18:22 states, "He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the LORD." (NKJV)

So we are blessed by the Lord through finding a wife. Also, we must not forget the wife of 'noble character' of Proverbs 31:10-31, which is a complete contrast of Proverbs 21:19!

I, for one, am not married. If it is the Lord's will, then maybe someday I could hope to meet a woman like that described in Proverbs 31:10-31 who just might take an interest in me.. :)

Blessings!

Would the "corner of the roof of your house" be the "dog house" in current speech? :-) A man is blessed indeed if his wife is not a quarrelsome or a nagging person. I've been married 42 years to a non-quarrelsome, kind-hearted loyal Christian woman. I appreciate her very much and love her dearly. Sometimes it's all I can do to keep from telling her that! :-) ....... But a woman also is blessed if her husband is kind, gentle and does not try to be domineering. My wife and I try to put Christ first in all things. And let me tell you, things go better for any couple who do that. --Hank

Hank, Amen brother, once again good preaching!!!!
My lovely bride of 36 years has been a blessing in my life. I never once had to go to the roof. And of course like your wife she was blessed with a prince of a guy like me. Pat! pat! (that is the sound of me patting myself on the back) :-)

I’m not aware of any specific study but I’m sure there are many available. You might check a local Bible Book store.
May I suggest you do your own bible study on Proverbs. Most of the verses are self contained, by that I mean you really don’t need any outside source to help explain or interpret them for you.
If you have any specific questions I’m sure the forum would be more than happy to assist you in reaching an answer.

Proverbs are excellent for daily devotions, I have made it a point to read a proverb chapter a day for that last 12 years so I guess I have read through proverbs over hundred times. I still find new and exciting revelation, encouragement and tips in day to day living and conduct.
The wisdom contained there is to be treasured.

Be Blessed and be a Blessing

HOW CAN ONE LIVE WITH A QUARRELSOME WIFE
Proverbs
If a man is thoughtful, kind, considerate, and really "knows" his wife, she is less likely to be quarrelsome. One wonders how this verse would have been written had a woman written the book of Proverbs. (No, I'm not quibbling that it was inspired by God, but scripture needs to be balanced and this one is used quite a bit to put women down when they have legitimate complaints about their husbands.)

GrannyBrat, your turn of phrase, "Scripture needs to be balanced," evokes some curiosity. May one rightly infer that your view is that Scripture somehow isn't quite balanced? Would you care to comment further on the subject? --Hank
HOW CAN ONE LIVE WITH A QUARRELSOME WIFE
Proverbs
I'm so sorry. I should have said it differently. It's not the scripture that is imbalanced. Scripture should be balanced with other scriptures. That's what I meant. It's hard when one uses the medium of the written word. What I mean using certain words could be construed as meaning something else because we are not interacting face to face. I'm sorry if I made my statement in such a way as to be obscure.

A querrelsome woman would not be soothed if she had this verse quoted to her, but might find it palatable were the verse balanced out with verses about mutual submission or the man's duty to lay down his life for his wife.

With a name like GrannyBrat, there is simply no way you could have meant anything sinister, or disrespectful of Scripture, in your post :-) Please don't feel abashed by a post that may have contained merely a slightly obsure line or two. It's still worth at least a B plus. Posts appear on the forum from time to time that contain 40 lines and 41 of them are murky! Good to have you with us and God richly bless you. Merry Christmas. --Hank

You may be able to find such a balance that you speak of in Ephesians 5:22-33.

The wisest man that became a fool?
Proverbs
In 1 Kings 3:12 God says to Soloman "I will give you a wise and dicerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be." Now we know that Soloman turned and followed other Gods (1 Kings 11:5). Proverbs 2:10-12 says "For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowlege will be pleasant to your soul. DISCRETION will protect you and understanding will gaurd you. WISDOM will save you from the ways of wicked men...." My question is at what time of Solomas life did he right this and if it was before, why didn't it save him from turning to other Gods, if he was the wisest man ever?. Did Soloman turn back to God befor he died? Did he write Proverbes and Ecclesiastes after he came back to God from following other Gods. That might me be why he thinks wisdom is so meaningless, and God is the only thing that matters? What do you think?
The wisest man that became a fool?
Proverbs
  Greetings Seanster,

Vanity is defined as conceit, self-praise, immodesty, boasting.. Solomon was a very young man (1 Kings 3:7) when he not only became a leader of a nation, but the leader of God's chosen people! Correct me if I am wrong, but Solomon does not strike me as a person who was ever 'needy' or in want.. He prayed for wisdom, which showed that his heart was in the right place to start with (and he used this wisdom to judge Israel, become world famous and write three books of the Bible!). But his heart turned from the Lord (1 Kings 11:4-13). I believe that a man's beginnings tell a lot about the character of a man. David, his father, had humble beginnings (2 Sam. 7:8- as opposed to Solomon) and became the 2nd greatest King the Israelites ever had (Jesus being the Supreme King!). After building God's temple and fulfilling his destiny, there wasn't a whole lot for him to do since Israel enjoyed peace on all sides.. When you are the richest, wisest, most powerful, most respected, and have more wives than anyone else could ever imagine, then I can see where Solomon would view everything as vanity! But he could not resist the temptation to indulge in it (since that was constantly all around him), and that eventually led his heart away from God, who was the Source of all his blessings.

Blessings to you,

Nolan
