  Paul, "Attain to the resurrection"?
Philippians
This is a question about Phil. 3:11.

What does Paul mean by the term "attain to
the resurrection from the dead"?

Was he worried about wheather or not he would
be resurrected?
I know he did not teach works salvation.
So what is his point?

  Paul, "Attain to the resurrection"?
Philippians
When Paul, with reference to this out-resurrection out of the dead writes "If only I may attain," he is not expressing distrust in the power or love of God nor doubt as to his own salvation. Paul often rejoices in assurance of salvation (Rom.6:5,8;7:25;8:16,17, 35-39). In this assurance he was strengthened as the years went by (1 Tim.1:15-17). But he wrote it in the spirit of deep humility and commendable distrust in self. The words also imply earnest striving.

I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me, is saying, through Christ, you can face anything, anything, because He is there!!
  Verse 4:13 say in Philippians?
Philippians
Why would we need God if we could rely upon our own strength and ability to accomplish anything. When faced with a challenge that seems greater than we are, our first response, usually, is God I can't do that! You're right. You can't. It takes God, thru Christ, to strengthen you (and who gives that strength) to get it done.

You're right: "The meaning seems to be pretty clear." We find out what the Bible means by what it says. The best way to find out what it says is to look it up in the Bible and read it. (This isn't rocket science, is it?)

Blessings to you and thanks for quoting the verse from additional versions. It is said that the best commentary is a good translation.

Apparently so, as I understand their literature*. Here's their web site: http://www.bibleworks.com/

From their web site:

"The new Version Database Compiler lets you build your own Bible versions for use in BibleWorks. The new version can be displayed and searched, just like the other Bible versions in BibleWorks! This will be a great boon to missionaries and translators. Simply provide the text to BibleWorks in ASCII text format, with verse references for each verse, and the BibleWorks Version Database Compiler will compile the database and install it in BibleWorks."

According to Paul the Philippian believers were experiencing the same conflicts or struggles he had. Philippians 1:30. Philippians 2:3 states what type of attitude/action should be followed to avoid provoking such behavior. in fact the entire letter addresses apropiate behavior and attitudes in believers. Referencecs to this topic are found in James 3 and Galatians 5
Was there a conflict in the congregation
Philippians
  Greetings Hermanus!

There are hints in Phillipians of conflict. Most of it external, but some internal.

External:

Chapter 1 talks about persecution and struggle that the church was facing.

Chapter 3 talks about the Judaizers and their negative influence.

Internal:

Chapter 2 talks about humility and love. The implication being that some were not acting in this way.

Chapter 4 talks about some sort of conflict between the women Euodia and Syntyche.

I would be surprised if there were not some conflict at Philippi. After all, they were human! :-) But, overall, they seem to have been a very healthy and spiritually mature church.

  Paul, "Attain to the resurrection"?
Philippians
Paul may very well have been suggesting the idea "If only my life here can accurately reflect the resurrection to come" - to attain - to strive to live now as if the resurrection has been complete in our lives. To unleash the resurrection power NOW and not wait until the work is completed . . . see the first chapter - - 'He who becan a work in you WILL complete it" he never doubts the completion - but often talks about the striving to be like Christ....
he mentions in another place the desire to run in such a way as to not be disqulified from the race.... I do not beleive he means in eternity - but perhaps like so many today, to be discredited and thus "disqualified" in the eyes of others to minister because of personal sin.

Philippians 2:12 is an interesting verse. It was pointed out to me that it doesn't say "work for" but "work out". Here, Paul seems to be speaking about obedience. If you are saved, show it. You represent God, not yourself.

What do you think?

what is meant by work out your own salva
Philippians
  Hello mommyolen,

There are many verses in the word that point to how we should "work out our own salvation" or how to live after we are saved. Benjamite pointed out the correct passage in Phillipians that seems to be what you were referring to, but if you read on further in that chapter, it's partly explained.

Phil 2
13) "for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
14) Do all things without grumbling or disputing;
15) so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world,
16) holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.

Romans 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Give youself completely to Jesus, study, and meditate on the word. Now that we're saved, it's what we do with that great gift.

Titus 3:8
This is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed God will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men

Love in Christ

what is meant by work out your own salva
Philippians
Here are some more insights on Philippians 2:12, to work does not imply to earn your salvation, but for the believer to put an effort, to work out your salvation, to see it evidenced in all areas of your life. the believer must finish, must carry to conclusion, must apply to its fullest consequences what is already given by God in principle...He must "workout" what God in his grace has "worked" in. We are not to live in constant sense of fear or terror, but we should live with a fear of failing to work out your own salvation.
By the way what kind of name is mommyolen? I don't seem to find that name anywhere in the bible? :). Talk to you next time, God Bless

  Greetings in Jesus' Name!

Although non-scriptural, an illustration that comes to mind is a "workout!" We exercize the body to maintain or improve its physical condition. It is not enough to just go the the gym and "look at" the equipment - you have to USE it!

This can also be applied to our spiritual health and "conditioning!"

  Does Paul want to suffer?
Philippians
  Phil 3:10,11
Paul states that he wants to know Christ to the extent of sharing Christ's sufferings and becoming like Christ in his death, somehow attain the resurrection from the dead. In context with the paragraph written, what does Paul mean becoming like Christ in his death? Does he want to suffer?
  Does Paul want to suffer?
Philippians
In the context of the paragraph, Paul is expressing his great love for Christ Jesus. Paul knows that God's goal for him (and for all of us) is to be conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29), and that such transformation comes only by way of the Cross. Paul's former life was one of legalistic righteousness, and he was a master of it. But he discovered all of that to be "counted as loss for the sake of Christ". Not for the knowledge of Christ, or the teaching of Christ, but for Christ Himself. Paul goes on to say that he considers all things to be loss in view of "knowing Christ my lord". Paul is not after knowledge ABOUT Jesus, but he is wanting Jesus Himself. He is wanting to gain Christ, and to know the power of His resurrection. He wants to exit this life as Jesus did: by the will of God, and with God's approval when he passes into His presence. Do you not want the same? Is it important to you that Jesus says to you, "Well done good and faithful servant?" I believe this is what Paul is talking about. Paul's devotion to Jesus is complete: he wants it to increase.

He continues with "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (verse 14) And he encourages you (and me) to have the same attitude.

Does Paul want to suffer? I believe only if his sufferings will bring glory to Christ Jesus and His coming kingdom. Here is Paul's dedication to Christ in a nutshell: "Christ in you the hope of glory" Col 1:27b. May it be yours as well.

Thank you Mathematician for your detailed answer to my question of many years. I have researched this time and time again with the same answer.....have this attitude of Christ, who being God died on the cross for my sins even though I did not deserve his love. I accept your answer.

  Define "local church."
Phil 1:1
Dear JVH0212, Very appropriate 1,000th posting! Congratulations, my good friend.

A local church is a 'mutually committed expression of the body of Christ in a specific locality.' A family of believers that have bound themselves together before God, dedicated to showing forth Jesus to their neighborhood. In the early church, these were usually gathering in a saint's house.

"how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house," Acts 20:20 NASB
"also greet the church that is in their house. Greet Epaenetus, my beloved, who is the first convert to Christ from Asia." Romans 16:5 NASB
"The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila and Prisca greet you heartily in the Lord, with the church that is in their house." 1 Corinthians 16:19 NASB
"and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:" Philemon 1:2 NASB

Another aspect is that there should be fellowship, as in the sharing of lives, with our homes open to eachother. This implies a commitment to one another beyond *membership.*

"And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 2:42 NASB

Finally, I can find no reference in the Bible to connecting one local church to another in any form of organization. The thought of 'strength in numbers' is never spoken, nor is the binding of any local body to another for denominational (divisional) identity ever portrayed. The absence of any encouragement to 'make a name for yourselves,' and the many warnings not to become like the Pharisees, Saducees, scribes, or any other 'named' grouping, leads me to believe that God never intended for their to be anything more than the local church.

I would welcome anyone that can Biblically defend 'denominationalism' without claiming superior doctrine or 'strength in numbers.' (both points are moot in Jesus)

Blessings to all, and blessings to the local church.

In Christ Jesus, charis
