Num 13 and spiritual mapping. Yes or no?
Numbers
Numbers ch 13 is being used to promote spiritual mapping as a legitimate practice for effective evangelism. Is this good or bad exegesis?
Num 13 and spiritual mapping. Yes or no?
Numbers
Dear geoffc, I cannot see that you can get any help from Numbers chapter 13. 10 out of 12 'heads of the sons of Israel' had no faith, and the 'mapping' of the land was for the purpose of killing, enslaving or displacing the inhabitants. Hardly evangelism! Spiritual mapping does take any rocket science; our first 'territory' is our own immediate family (spouse, children), then our extended family (including in-laws). The next obvious group would be friends, acquaintances, coworkers, classmates, etc. Next is the people that 'the Lord sends to you' in your daily walk. We have a responsibility to share the Gospel with those that we know, which is much more difficult than people we do not know. Our most effective tool is the 'preaching' of the Gospel, the power of the Word of God, spoken in faith. The next most effective tool is our example of faith, the 'testimony' of our lives. This 'testimony' is not money or position, but the holy manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit. "Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may on account of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation." 1 Peter 2:12 NASB. Then you will be effective to evangelize the lost. I am not saying that you cannot go out and evangelize until you have 'saved' all your family and friends. But I look askance at a believer that is 'full of charisma and the 'gift of gab,' brimming with convincing evangelism and enthusiasm, but their natural life is in a shambles. I also wonder about a church that goes to great lengths to 'fill the pews,' but does not shepherd the flock. This is not a judgment on any man or church, just an observation.

Blessings in Christ Jesus, charis

What are the Methodists up to?
Numbers
What are the Methodists up to? I got this from Fallwell today:

Our Heavenly … Mother?

Speaking of political correctness, a new hymnal supplement being utilized in some United Methodist churches is attempting to feminize the Old Time Religion in quite an alarming manner. One hymn in "The Faith We Sing" hymnal refers to our heavenly Father as "Mother God." Another refers to the Holy Spirit as "She [who] Comes Sailing on the Wind." Other hymns sing praises to "Mother Earth," "Mothering Christ" and "Holy Partner."

While some hymns in the book are traditional Christian songs, Mark Tooley, executive director of the United Methodist committee of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, believes the songs that embrace feminist theology signify a growing distance from Evangelicalism in the 8.4-million-member denomination.

"The whole point of Christian hymnals is to worship the God of the Bible," Mr. Tooley told the Washington Times. "The problem with worshipping a ‘Mother God’ or feminine deity is that it is not the God of the Bible."

The IRD, an ecumenical alliance of Christians based in Washington, claims that the recently published United Methodist hymnal subtly introduces feminist theology into hymns that inaccurately depict God. In other words, these songs are part of the continuing quest to create God in man’s image. Mr. Tooley says that some of the theology behind the hymns has been influenced by the "Re-Imagining Community," a Minneapolis group whose participants have introduced the worship of Sophia, the "goddess of wisdom."

We are seeing increasing numbers of churches replacing the truths of the Bible with feel-good "spirituality" that is designed to feminize or humanize the God of the Bible. Sadly, these people are blinded to the fact that God’s ways are far above the mortally flawed considerations of man:

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts

Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

So are My ways higher than your ways,

And My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55: 8,9, NKJV)

This should not surprise anyone. About five years ago the Methodist women’s ministry hosted a conference dealing with the Goddess of wisdom (I can not recall the name they gave her). They formulated this idea from the book of Proverbs where wisdom is referred to in feminine gender. At the conference attended by a large number (I can not recall the actual number but I believe it to be in the thousands) of Methodist women they set an agenda to do just this. Modify Methodist material to pay homage to this goddess and the feminine gender. They concluded the conference serving communion of milk and honey. I was further mortified to find out some of the participants were in fact topless.

  Yes, Norrie and Ed!

These add to the ever growing pile of reasons that eventually drove me away from the United Methodist church and for good! Their stance on the issue of homosexuality is also mortifying.

Norrie, sad to say, I'm afraid it's not only the Methodists who stray from their conservative and biblically-based heritage. The Presbyterians are in a bad way too. My wife and I were Presbyterians for 35 years and left them and joined the Southern Baptists about 4 years ago. And we bless the day we made our decision. It's unbelievable the spiritual bankruptcy and decay into which some of the churches in our land have fallen. Mainline churches are losing members like mad and they don't seem to get the message, or care, that are on the path to extinction. --Hank

I know I was on a forum where there was a homosexual man spouting off the "feel good" theology, he did not "buy" the Bible, what it said or believe Jesus should be your personal savior, then he started spouting his minister said...come to find out he was Methodist. From what I've understood about them, they certainly have sunk.

  Scripture ... Gen 10:6-8, Num 12:1, 2 Sam 18:21ff ...

robinkath, greetings. Here is what I know.
Gen 10:6-8 "The sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan. The sons of Cush were Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. Now Cush became the father of Nimrod; he became a mighty one on the earth" (1 Chr 1:8-10).

While we know about some of the sons of Cush. He maintained his own legacy:
- Moses married a Cushite woman (Num 12:1)
- A Cushite was a runner for David and brought the bad new (2 Sam 18:21ff).
- Cush is mentioned together with Egypt eight times in Isaiah.
- I saw the tents of Cushan under distress, The tent curtains of the land of Midian were trembling (Hab 3:7).

Hope this helps,

  The Ordination of Women

  Ordination of Women

There seem to be many views about this
topic. I want to know how can anyone
question someone who feels that they have
been called by God? We have a woman in
our church who feels that God is calling
her to be ordained. This has split our
church right down the middle as far as
opinions go. I am of the thinking that
if someone feels they have heard God
speaking to them, who are we (they) to
say he isn't??? Does anyone have any
insight on this. I will be representing
my opinion (and that of many others)
tonight in our church conference. Any
advice, suggestions, scripture is
appreciated!
  The Ordination of Women
Numbers
Donnaeve, Hi, and I am enjoying your question because this is something that has been asked before, and many do not agree, but It calls to mind the scriptures in Numbers,

Num 22:21-29

21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

23 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

24 But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

25 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

26 And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

27 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.

28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

That if God can choose an ass to speak for him then Gee, then God can choose a woman to speak on his behalf as well.

I feel that if you take off the flesh body, then what do you have? We are all the same.

1 Cor 15:50

50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
KJV

So if this is true, then Women can be called.

Matt 22:14

14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
KJV

1 Tim 2:12

12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
KJV

The translation in the original Greek for the word for (woman) here is wife,

NT:1135 (woman)

gune (goo-nay'); probably from the base of NT:1096; a woman; specially, a wife:

KJV - wife, woman.

The translation for (usurp) in the original Greek renders-

NT:831

authenteo (ow-then-teh'-o); from a compound of NT:846 and an obsolete hentes (a worker); to act of oneself, i.e. (figuratively) dominate:

KJV - usurp authority over.

Do you see in this translation of usurp, it says to act of oneself. But if God had called her to be ordained she is not acting of oneself but what god wants, and who are we to trust? God or Man?

God Bless your endeavours, and may you remain diligent in your determination to understand our Father's word.

Your sister in the Living Water of Truth.

  The Ordination of Women
Numbers
Thanks to all who have been answering my question re:Ordination of Women thus far. I particularly
enjoyed SERENTIME's answer because I have stated much the same to anyone who asked; if God can use a burning bush and a donkey to bring his message, why not a woman??? I guess you can tell from my original question and thoughts that I think it is perfectly fine for a woman to be ordained--or to do what she feels compelled in the spirit of spreading God's word. We have other Christian's in our church who believe otherwise and they have harassed the particular individual who has requested ordination by our church via emails, phone calls and going to her house. Please keep sending me your views. This is very helpful and informative...

God Bless Us All,

  MARRIAGE
Num 1:3
WHAT AGE WAS THE YOUNGEST PERSON THAT MARRIED IN THE BIBLE?
  MARRIAGE
Num 1:3
  Greetings Leroy,

I do not believe that I can find anywhere in the Bible that suggests that any person married under the age of 20.. As for the age of 20, it was generally regarded as an age where men were considered as able to serve in the army (Numbers 1:3), and I would suggest that this would also carry the "acknowledgment" of adulthood, and therefore marriage. But that is the best answer that I can give you, based upon Biblical evidence.

Perhaps someone who is more "well-versed" in Jewish culture could more accurately answer this question.

  "Deuel" or "Reuel"?
Num 2:14
Should the name "Deuel" here be "Reuel", as expressed in the NKJV?
  "Deuel" or "Reuel"?
Num 2:14
John Wesley's Explanatory Notes in E-sword had this to say on Num 1:14 ("from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel")

Deuel is called Reuel in Num_2:14, the Hebrew letters Daleth and Resh being often changed.

Other than this, I do not know.

In Numbers the Lord told Moses that "divisions" were resposnsible for different tasks related to the tabernacle. The duties of the Kohath division was to carry the ark and other items in the tabernacle after they had been covered by Aaron. They were instructed to carry them without touching them.   Does God punisg women for divorce?
Num 5:31
Does this mean that God won't punish men for their wrongdoings of any kind? He will only punish women? This doesn't make sense to me. OR, is He saying that the woman will only be punished if she is found guilty of cheating?

We are all guilty before God and deserve punishment, Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Grace1234, the context of the passage is that of an unfaithful wife and a jealous husband. She is punished, but he is not, in this case. Jealousy may be justified. Searcher
