The Ryrie Expanded Edition NASB Study Bible states, "AUTHOR: Anonymous DATE: 1050-1000 B.C.

Authorship and Date

Though the author of this book is unknown, the Talmud suggests Samuel, and it is possible that he may have written portions. Judges was written after the death of Samson and after the coronation of King Saul, but before the conquest of Jerusalem by David about 990 B.C. (see 1:21; 17:6; 18:1; 19:1; 21:25)."
Was Sampson a suicide terrorist killer?
Judges
What's the difference between Sampson and the terrorists? Obviously, God used Sampson to glorify Himself during the occupation by the Philistines. Sampson killed himself in the destruction of their twin towers and killed thousands. Is it merely our God is real and theirs is not? I understand Christ brought us into an age of grace and love, but it is understandable that another religion would have similar views about killing as a judgement, isn't it?

McLemore, Would you say God is a terrorist (1 Sam 16:15; Job 6:4, 31:23)?

Samson wanted revenge one more time (Jdg 16:28). I think it as an act of war, as so many times in the OT.

Judges
Judg 16:30 And Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines!" And he bent with all his might so that the house fell on the lords and all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he killed in his life.

Dear McLemore,

Welcome to the Study Bible Forum!

The subject of suicide crossed my mind the other day, and I did think about Samson in that context. It struck me that his death was not suicide, since by definition suicide is taking ones own life. The above verse shows that he asked the Lord to let him die with the Philistines, and the Lord answered his prayer, otherwise it was possible, though maybe unlikely, that he would have survived the collapse of the house.

Samson had been captured and enslaved, while the bombers premeditatively and voluntarily crashed the jets to murder people. Samson acted in defense of the nation who was indeed being oppressed by the Philistines. As you remember, the Philistines had removed all weapons from the Israelites. The oppression the terrorists claim is only in their minds.

Peace,
Lionstrong

God is not a terrorist and neither was Samson (no "P"). It's merely interesting to see radical views of today by some religions were not always so radical... The difference is our God changed the relationship from judgement to grace-- "theirs" still hasn't.

Judges
2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Ex 34:6 Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;
Ex 34:7 who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations."

Greetings Mc,

The Lord has not changed from judgement to grace. He revealed to Moses a long time ago that he is a God of grace, compassion and judgement. And he revealed in Christ that we would all stand before the judgement seat of Christ. No God has not and does not change, which is why his lovingkindness endures forever and we are not consumed.

Mal 3:6 "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.
and,
Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Peace,
Lionstrong

What lesson can be learnt from Sampson?

My NIV Bible study otes says: (Judges 16:28-30) In spite of Samson's past, God still answered his prayer and destroyed the pagan temple and worshipers. God still loved him. He was willing to hear Samson's prayer of confession and repentance and use him this final time. One of the effects of sin in our lives is to keep us from feeling like praying. But perfect moral behavior is not a condition for prayer. Don't let guilt feelings over sin keep you from your only means of restoration. No matter how long you have been away from God, he is ready to hear from you and restore you to a right relationship. Every situation can be salvaged if you are willing to turn again to him. If God could still work in Samson's situation, he can certainly make something worthwhile out of yours.

Judges
  Hello churchlady30!

The book of Judges contains accounts of those who "judged" or led Israel during the time period between Joshua's death and Samuel, who was the last "judge" before Saul became King over Israel.

The Judges include:

*Othniel (3:7-11)
*Ehud (3:12-30)
Shamgar (3:31)
*Deborah (chapters 4-5)
*Gideon (chapters 6-8)
Abimelech ("the conspirator", chapter 9)
Tola (10:1-2)
Jair (10:3-5)
*Jephthah (10:6-12:7)
Ibzan (12:8-10)
Elon (12:11-12)
Abdon (12:13-15)
*Samson (chapters 13-16)

(*) "Major" judge

And, of course, Samuel in 1 and 2 Samuel..

I hope that this has helped!

why is Barak cited in Hebrews 11:32?
Judges
In Hebrews 11:32, the "Hall of Faith," Barak is included. When I read Judges 4, the story of Barak and Deborah, it seems that Barak was not an example of faith at all - that it was Deborah who trusted God and went into battle, and that she was to receive the credit. So why is Barak cited in Hebrews 11 and not Deborah? Other women are noted there, eg Rahab.

I don't know maybe it is because he trusted a woman? :-)

Just kidding ladies !!! Please no hate mail!
I repent!

Seriously he was the one leading the army admittedly on Deborah's word. The question is was he trusting Deborah or God and Hebrew 11:32 states he was trusting God.
See excerpt from Unger's
BAR´AK (“lightning”). The son of Abinoam of Kedesh, a city of refuge in the tribe of Naphtali (Judges 4:6). He was summoned by the prophetess Deborah to take the field against the army of the Canaanitish king, Jabin, commanded by Sisera, with a force of ten thousand men from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun. He was further instructed to proceed to Mt. Tabor, for Jehovah would draw Sisera and his host to meet him at the river Kishon and deliver him into his hand. Barak consented only on the condition that Deborah would go with him, which she readily promised. Sisera, being informed of Barak’s movements, proceeded against him with his whole army, including nine hundred chariots. At a signal given by the prophetess, the little army, seizing the opportunity of a providential storm, boldly rushed down the hill and utterly routed the host of the Canaanites. The victory was decisive: Harosheth-hagoyim was taken, Sisera murdered, and Jabin ruined (Judges 4), between 1195 and 1155 B.C. The victory was celebrated by a beautiful hymn of praise composed by Barak in conjunction with Deborah (Judges 5). Barak appears in the list of the faithful of the OT (Hebrews 11:32).

  robfl253,

Judg 16:1-25
16:1 Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.
2 And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
3 And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron.
4 And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
5 And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
6 And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.
7 And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
9 Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
10 And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.
11 And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
12 Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread.
13 And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.
14 And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
15 And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
16 And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;
17 That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a rasor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
19 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.
20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.
22 Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.
23 Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.
By his lust and letting his guard down, he was betrayed by Delilah and by the strength he was given by his hair as a covering was no longer there.

I hope I have helped. SERENETIME

  ehud killed king Eglon. why?
  ehud killed king Eglon. why?
Judg 3:15
  Greetings Churchlady30!

Ehud was one of the Judges of Israel. Over a period of time, Israel fell into a vicious cycle. They would fall into sin and God would send an enemy to punish them. They would then repent and God would send a deliever to free them from the enemy.

Judges 3:12 tells us that God sent King Eglon as a result of Israel's sin. Verse 14 tells us that Israel was subject to King Eglon for 18 years.

Judges 3:15 tells us that Israel cried out to God and He sent them a deliever - a man named Ehud! He killed King Eglon because God sent him to do so. The result, according to v. 30, was 80 years of peace for Israel.

I hope this helps!

IS THERE A PLACE IN THE BIBLE THAT IN GENERAL TALKS ABOUT A CHRISTMAS TREE OR THE DECORATING OF SUCH,ALSO A PLACE THAT TALKS ABOUT A WOMAN OF THE BIBLE BEING A PREACHER AND WHO IS SHE?
DOES THE BIBLE TALK ABOUT CHRISTMAS TREE
Judg 4:4
Cheri, no Christmas trees in the Bible. No Christmas either. The Advent of our Lord certainly is mentioned in the Gospels. The lowly manger is a stark contrast to the glitter and dazzle of our modern-day commercial, secular clap-trap the world calls Christmas. Oh, I almost forgot. Hardly even Christmas anymore, because that word contains the name of Christ. The politically and socially correct thing is Holidays. The second part of your question, about a woman preacher in the Bible. The Bible contains some wonderful stories about some truly lovely women -- Esther, Ruth, Mary, the mother of our Lord, to name three. None of these could hardly be called preachers in the usual sense of the word. Perhaps the closest one to fit the definition in a very large and broad sense might be someone like Deborah, who was both a prophetess and a judge. I suppose a prophet in the Old Testament could in some sense be thought of as a predecessor of the evangelist in the New. --Hank

Judg 4:4
Yes, there are places (plural) where the Bible mentions women (plural) as preachers (plural).

. . . The word prophetess is mentioned a total of 8 times in the entire Bible. If you look up the references, you will see in most cases, not only is the word prophetess mentioned, but also the name of the prophetess is given. Bear in mind that "to prophesy" means "to preach (tell forth)" as well as "to tell the future (forth-tell)". The references to prophetesses are as follows:

. . . Ex 15:20; Jud 4:4; 2Ki 22:14; 2Ch 34:22; Ne 6:14; Isa 8:3; Lu 2:36; Re 2:20

In short, yes there is more than one woman preacher (prophet) in the Bible.
