Author of James, brother of Jesus?
James
Is the author of James the brother of Jesus?
Author of James, brother of Jesus?
James
In the Gospel of Mark, chapter 6 verse 3 identifies James as the brother of Jesus, also he names Joses, Judah, and Simon as brothers of Jesus and he also eludes to sisters of Jesus, although he doesn't name them or say how many there are.

Does James 2 contradict Romans 4 concerning faith vs. works?
Does Jas 2 contradict Rom 4?
James
No, because Paul, in Romans, is talking about our imputed justification which makes us righteous in the sight of God and is a gift from Him; whereas, James is discussing our obedience to live out our faith, to live out the Christian life, and he uses the word "justification" in the sense of our faith being vindicated before men. They are using the same word "justification" in two DIFFERENT ways. (This can be discerned by carefully studying the context.)
Author of James, brother of Jesus?
James
No. The author of James is the brother of John of the sons of Zebedee. Matt. 4:21

"Of the 4 men named James in the NT, only two are candidates for authorship of this epistle. No one has seriously considered James the Less, the son of Alphaeus . . . , or James the father of Judas, not Iscariot . . . Some have suggested James the son of Zebedee and brother of John (Matt. 4:21), but he was martyred too early to have written it (Acts 12:2). That leaves only James, the oldest half-brother of Christ (Mark 6:3) and brother of Jude (Matt 13:55)." (MacArthur Study Bible, p. 1924)

Did James (author) know as much as Paul?
James
Was the author of James as inspired as the Apostle Paul? Some say he didn't have all the facts when he wrote the book of James.
Did James (author) know as much as Paul?

They are equally inspired. Your question seems to be based around the usage of the word "faith" in the Pauline epistles and the book of James. I truly believe both "faith alone" (Paul) and "faith without works is dead" (James) are complimentary. True "faith" is ACTIVE and requires a certain measure of trust (not simple intellectual assent like demons have). In the same manner, faith without works (which are a byproduct of a faith enacted) is dead, i.e., a false faith. When Paul speaks of works, he is talking of works of righteousness meant to GAIN salvation. When James speaks of works, he is talking of deeds RESULTING from salvation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Dear Inerrant Word: I agree with your fine answer. And for anyone to argue that one passage of Scripture actually contradicts another passage is to deny that "all Scripture is inspired by God." Who superintended the writing of Romans? The Holy Spirit. Who superintended the writing of James? The Holy Spirit. Who superintended the writing of the Mosaic Law? The Holy Spirit.

. . . The Bible, while it may contain "apparent" contradiction, actually contains no contradiction at all. Paradox maybe, but not contradiction.

. . . May I add: in short, Timothy is speaking of being justified in the eyes of *men," while Paul is teaching about being justified in the eyes of *God.* Not pointing a finger at anyone in particular, but whoever does not understand the distinction between and harmony of James and Romans is in no position to be confident that he is "a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes." Time to go back to Bible Basics 101.

Did the author of Job know as much as Moses? To answer in the negative is not to imply that the writings of Moses are somehow more inspired, hence more correct, than were the writings of the author of Job. Who had greater knowledge of spiritual truth is not the issue here. The issue is that both Romans and James were equally inspired.

Thank you for your insight. I agree wholeheartily. I was more or less playing the "devil's advocate" in asking the question.
Did James (author) know as much as Paul?

As many know, Martin Luther sincerely questioned whether James should be in the canon of scriptures. But I believe the resurrected Lord Jesus appeared to James (I Cor 15:7), and although I can't prove it, I believe he would have been enlightened by the Lord at this meeting.

  Correction: delete Timothy; add James.

. . . Correction: In the line that says: "in short, Timothy is speaking of", delete "Timothy" and add "James".

  Deaconjohn,

Good question! James has been viewed as being written very early (before A.D. 50) since there is no reference made to the controversy over Gentile circumcision and the term 'synagogue' is used to designate the meeting place of the church (2:2). The earliest canonical letter of Paul would probably be 1 Thessalonians (but there is a possibility that Galatians could have been written at an earlier date). The NASB Study Bible dates 1 Thessalonians around A.D. 51-52.. The dates and synoptic questions surrounding the Gospels only adds to the speculation of their dating. I, for one, believe that Matthew was originally written in Hebrew, and therefore, the first Gospel to be written. Also, no one knows just who the author of Hebrews is, and it is clear that it had to have been written sometime before 70 A.D. (the destruction of Jerusalem). Also, we can only 'assume' that Jude was written during the time of 2 Peter, so nothing is known about the date of this letter either.

I would say that the 'real' candidates for the 'earliest book written in the NT' are:

James, 1 Thessalonians, Galatians and Matthew

(and not in any particular order)

Blessings!

Nolan

Megawati, no matter whatever stimulus prompted your declaration, it is always a good idea to read and study the Bible for oneself. Two thoughts come to mind: (!) So few do these days. The world is too much with us; the demands it makes on our time and energy are enormous; the lure and glitter of the TV and Internet steals our leisure time and militates against serious reading of all kinds, and that of course includes the Bible. (2) We should be thankful that in America we have an abundant availability of Bibles and the freedom still to purchase and read them, if not in public schools, at least in our homes and churches. In many countries in our time Bibles are unavailable if not forbidden. In the English-speaking countries many versions are available; in some countries, none. Any excuse that an American of average intelligence and reading ability could offer for not having at least a fair knowledge of the Bible would be a lame one..... Your desire to read the Bible is commendable. By all means read it for all it's worth! --Hank
