Does Jesus' name satisfy Matt 28:19? |
|
|
|
Acts 2:38
|
| |
Dear JVH0212 (again), Though I agree that Jesus Himself commanded that we baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, this command was pre-church. The church was created when the Holy Spirit was poured upon the gathered believers in Acts 2. Thereafter, I find no reference to any act being done in any other name than that of the Lord Jesus, the Christ. I find no action 'in the name of God,' or 'in the name of the Holy Spirit.' (Rom 2:24 is OT quote) Rather, I find that the name of Jesus (or Christ Jesus, or the Lord, etc.) is used extensively. I can't think of this as a 'formula.' Was Luke being brief or flippant? Were the apostles being disobedient to Jesus' command? I find it interesting to note that on TV we often hear 'in the name of God' or in a wedding scene 'in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,' but never hear 'in the name of Jesus.' Is this because Jesus is a 'rock of offense' as the Bible (OT and NT) so clearly states? I well understand that abusing the name of Jesus by heartless and mindless utterance or meaningless repetition is not holy. However, the simplicity of His name should not be underestimated, nor should we become too 'religious' in our interpretation of scripture. I am not 'Jesus only' and I believe strongly in the Trinity, or triune nature of God. But that cannot negate the authority and the power of the name of Jesus, in fact it bolsters and confirms it. |

In Jesus' name...except baptism? |
|
|
|
Col 3:17
|
| |
"...do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..." COL 3:17 Except water baptism? I ask this question seriously. I am not Jesus Only. But it seems to me that this issue is very emotional. I asked before and got the patent answer, "The Lord Himself said..." I have heard others base their belief upon tradition. Admittedly, even some early church fathers baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost (Spirit). I also heard that the name of Jesus is an abbreviation of a 'fuller formula.' Fine. But that does not answer why we use one scripture to supercede many other scriptures. If we are to baptize according to the 'fuller formula,' should we not then do all things in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit? How is this reconciled with the numerous actions of the apostles in the name of Jesus, and the commands to use His name? Were our predecessors disobedient to the command of the Lord? Perhaps they were running out of time, and used the abbreviation? My friends and colleagues, I am not trying to be irreverent. These are valid questions. Whenever we study the Bible, we give weight to such arguments when discussing other topics. Please, answer from the Bible, trying not to be led by tradition or the commentary of others. My intent is unity, not division. I believe in the power of the name of the Lord Jesus. On a side note, please notice that it is not only the 'formula' that is an area of division concerning water baptism. Method, age, place, baptizer, etc. are all subject to 'differing views.' (i.e. division) I look forward to some good answers. (p.s. please don't SHOUT) In Christ Jesus

In Jesus' name...except baptism? |
|
|
|
Col 3:17
|
| |
Here is my thought on this subject. It is one that I have studied because I asked the same question and got the same standard answers. In Mat. 28:19 we are told this:
(Mat 28:19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Then in the book of Acts, we see the Apostles baptizing people and they baptize them in Jesus name and not the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost. Using the Bible as my guide and not men's opinion nor doctrine. I have come to this understanding. Jesus is the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. It was in Jesus that God revealed Himself to mankind. Hebrews says,
(Heb 1:1) God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
(Heb 1:2) Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
(Heb 1:3) Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Jesus is what we know of God. Everything we learn or understand about God we pretty much learned from or through Jesus. So I believe doing everything (Col. 3:17) in the name of Jesus is doing everything in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Remember also that John 14-16 says when He, the Spirit is come, he glorify Jesus, not God. So I see everything in Jesus bringing glory to God the Father. By the way, I believe in the trinity, but in God's wisdom, He chose to reveal Himself to us in Jesus, one man, His only begotten Son.

Dear wdc, Well answered! Not because you reflect MY thinking, but because you answered the question, using the Bible. I have no notion or desire to be 'correct, as compared to other wrong people.' I want to please my Lord and Savior, Jesus, the Anointed One. I, too, believe in the Trinity, but am not a Trinitarian. I believe in three cleansing baptisms, but am not Baptist or Pentacostal or Charismatic. I believe in ministry, but am not a Minister. Blessed be the name of the Lord, without the adjectives. (Before anyone jumps on that, thinking that I mean the Father, Son and Holy Ghost are adjectives, this is not my meaning. Trinitarian, Calvinist, Methodist, Charismatic, etc. are all modifiers of the noun Christian. These are not blessed and holy, but human. My apologies to any that take offense. If anyone believes their adjective to be 'special,' let us all know.) In Jesus' name. |

Is prophecy dead? |
|
|
|
Matt 11:13
|
| |
It depends on what you mean by "prophesy" if it is a word that is to be taken as verbally from God- therefore the contents of those words are to be adhered to as we do Scripture- you are going to be hard pressed to prove your position from the Word of God. By the way John was an Apostle, chosen by the Lord to write Scripture, so your first defense falls, because 99 percent of the miracles and prophesy in the NT is by an apostle. Though normative for them in the office, does not mean normative for the church, or later generations. Like all adherents to the "so called" charismatic movement they have no Scriptual basis for how they operate their gifts, sense no clear definition or declaration is given as to how each and everyone was performed by the individual. The case of the modern "false tongues", every and I mean every indication in the NT is these were "earthly languages", never babbling unintelligble noise, yet every gift of so-called tongues today is nithing but gibberish. Speaking from experience since I have heard probably 6 to 7,000 people speak them, and not all at once, including myself who through the grace of God was delivered from the false holy ghost revival. As to heavenly pray language well it does not exsist and never did- 1 cor 12:7, Paul clearly states these gifts were for the "common" good never to build oneself up spiritually or communicate with God on a private level. The modern Cahrismatic movement, the Third Wave, etc, are "mysticism" in christian "sheep colthing".
I do not mean to be so blunt- but thats the facts.
Do I believe God speaks to His people - most assuredly- in the Word, in response to our prayers, and yes I have seen people raised from sickness to health, with the aid of doctors and without- though the Lord is working in both situations. But I have also seen loved ones slip into eternity- even with our prayers- but even there He works miracles in our minds and heart.
So yes our God is a God of miracles- but no the stuff I hear come from those who have fallen into the false "holy spirit" that started approx. 35 years ago.
Standing for our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the Eternal Spirit has redeemed us.

Did you pray about it? Was you led by the Spirit?
I would say No on the behalf of Jesus. Because the bible may not specifically say: You can't live together until you are married, but
1Cor. 6:18-20 "Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which s in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in you spirit, which are God's. 1Cor.7:1-2 Now concerning the things whereof ye wroteunto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to AVOID fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every have her own husband.
Are you having contact desires toward him and vis-versa? Do you sleep in the same bed? Are you and that person are having any type of phyical contact including (kissing)? Are you and that person are tempted to fornicate sometimes? Do you and that person see body parts that is not to be exposed until marriage?
You see, God do not temp any man with evil, nor He can be tempted with evil. James 1:13 also
1Cor.1:28 We all have trouble in the flesh
Hebrew 13:4 Marriage is honorable in all and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Why would God put you into a situation that you will be tempted. If you are not married then you and that person shouldn't be housing together. Some it's better to do that before marriage to see if you can get alone. A man find's a woman not a woman find's a man.
1Thes 5:22-23 Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be perserved BLAMELESS unto the coming
of Lord Jesus Christ. If you are witnessing to some one you know and they ask you; Are you married? What will you say. They are thinking why this person is talking to about God and she/he is living with a boy/girl-friend. That's fornication. And You may not had intercourse with that person. Living unmarried under the same roof with your boy/gril-friend unorginized by God. He is not a man that he should lie and He's not the author of confusion. It is not specifically like that but if you study enough you will know the truth and the truth will set you FREE! God put marriages together not boy/girl-friends. The Word said the two shall be one flesh. And you are not legally one flesh. Eph 5:31 When a man leaves his parents he joines unto his "wife" not a girlfriend
or vis-versa. Be a good example in every area not in certain areas. "Wholly" every area!
Now remember this, Matt. 5:28 whosoever look upon a woman to lust, has aready committed adultry in his heart. That goes for the fornicators too.

Mark 6:48
|
| |
Hi load, Do you sometimes wonder what life with Jesus would be like here on earth? We don't know of His early years, whether He was praised for His good carpentry, or whether He was a good competitor in the games they played back then. We know nothing as far as I know.
But I can see Jesus in this picture after feeling compassion for the large crowd because they were like sheep without a Shepherd, and praying to His heavenly Father for a while, and seeing that they still weren't at their destination because of the stiff wind, caught up to them and wanted to pass them and maybe say,"I'll race you to shore." I don't know what He'd say, but I would bet that He was competitive in any sport as any other youngster of His day.(Anyway I'd hate to play golf against God as the jokes go today).
Anyway, I think that Jesus was disappointed in their reaction to Him for they thought they saw a ghost, a spirit as you will. In the Greek it says, "Take courage. I am." He got into the boat with them and the wind stopped and they were astonished and still didn't know who He was because their heart was hardened. Do you agree with that?
I say they still didn't know who He was because in Mark 6:54 the Greek says that after the boat was anchored and they were good and safe, they recognized Him. Sure all the people recognized him, but I think that's when the disciples recognized Him also. If you look in your translation you can notice that "the people" is in italics meaning that those words aren't there in the Greek.
So what does that mean to us today? That Jesus was competitive and a good athlete, pretty fast even against the wind? Of course not. Probably if they had recognized Him, he would have let the wind die down, and allowed them to reach shore ahead of Him. No, what I know that it means for me is that "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want." |

Abomination; abominable: very hateful, detestable;
loathsome,disgusting, horrible.
Abominable is the strongest condemnatory language used by God in the entire bible. It is this word that He uses to describe astrology. Deut. 18:9-14 Moses warns us about unholy practices stating that anyone "who practices divination, or is a soothsayer" (one who has spiritual insight or is able to foretell events), "or an augur" (one who foretells future events by interpreting omens), "or a sorcerer" (wizard, conjurer, or magician), "or one who casts spells, or one who consults ghosts or spirits, or seeks oracles the dead is. For whoever does these things is abomination to the Lord". Astrology and horoscopes fall under these categories. Again in Gal. 5:19 Paul warns us again against the works of the flesh; included in these is sorcery. See also the commands for daily life in Leviticus 19,
verses 26 abd 31 again warn us of such things. |

The Old Testament talks about Scriptures placed by Moses in the Ark of the Covenant, Samuel at

Within the first century, the The early church fathers--Iraneus, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria-- referred to the New Testament Scriptures in their writings. Over 5000 copies were made by the early church copyists of the NT are in existence.

Jesus is the name of all three! Colosians 3 tells us that the fullness of the Godhead dwells in him bodily! Isaiah tells us that His name shall be called wonderful....the mighty God. The apostles after the 28:19 disertation from Christ.....get the baptism of the Holy Ghost and then Peter preaches in acts 2:38 repent every one of you and be baptized in the NAME of Jesus Christ....What!?!?!?! I thought Jesus said Father Son and Holy Ghost! Is Peter crazy? No. Jesus said to baptize IN THE NAME. This is why the word of God says His name is above all names!! Thomas said my Lord ....My God. Yes the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost is Jesus. He was the root and the offspring of Abraham. The beginning and the end, the word that was with God and the word that was God, and the word that was made flesh!! I hope this helps it is obvious to me by the colossions verse and others who the name was that Christ referred to. His name shall be called wonderful! Have a great day |

I grew up going to church on Sat Sabbath. I don't agree with all they teach, the Bible teaches more than what they teach. I am a penticostal now and have been for years. I am saved, santified and filled with the Holy Ghost. I feel like Sat. is the Sabbath God intended, however, if Churches attend on Sunday. To go to a church that teaches the Bible form cover to cover, I don't see how I can go on Sat. Sabbath. God has taught me tremendous amounts through the Holy Ghost.I just tust God that He knows, I can't change the day Churches attend, what else can I do?

to continue.... The scripture I was looking for is Luke 11:24. When a spirit is cast out of a man the only way it can come back is if the person did not get filled with the Spirit of God. No two spirits can dwell in the same body. I think this is what you were saying and that's true but just becasue you accept Jesus as your savior, that doesn't mean that you have power over the works of the enemy. Only the people who are filled with the Holy Ghost can do that. Acts 1:1-8. In Jesus' name |

Will we recognize each other in glory? |
|
|
|
Luke 24:1
|
| |
"O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!"
If Jesus didn't want them to recognize Him why would he go into such length talking about himself. Luke 24:26 "Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?"
Luke 24:27 Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
The text only says; "their eyes were prevented from recognizing him." Of course that doesn't mean that God didn't do it to them, but usually the Gospels make that clearer if God did something to someone. I would prefer to conclude that they were just as shook up as Peter and the others a few verses later. There it talks about they thought they'd seen a ghost! Anyone can be unable to believe their own senses if the otherwise unbelievable occurred. |

Dear Jim,
Can you clarify and repose your question please? I see that it was answered, but I'm not clear whether that was what you were asking. If it is, I would want to offer a different answer. However, I'd like to see the question clarified and asked again, so that a broader group of participants can respond.
It seems that you are asking, "What does it mean to baptize [people from all nations] in [or "into"] the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost?" in Matthew 28:19 as part of "mak[ing] disciples of all nations." Is this your question?
Jesus is definitely NOT the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. He is the Son; the Son is fully God, but God is not fully the Son. The concept of the Trinity is not fully comprehensible, but it is fairly simply stated in Scripture. There are a number of clear statements about God in Scripture that must be reconciled, and this reconciliation leaves us with the doctrine of the Trinity. It is difficult (impossible, given our current bodily and fleshly limitations?) to visualize and-or to understand fully HOW God can be what He describes Himself to be, but the specific descriptions are not complicated in and of themselves.
There is a lot that people on this list can contribute (and have contributed previously) to answer similar questions. Please don't give up with the one reply you received. Try to rephrase or clarify your question more deeply for us. Thanks! |

Perhaps it would simplify things to ask "What is the sin that IS forgivable?"

Does this explain Trinity? |
|
|
|

Does anyone disagree with this?
The Creed of Saint Athanasius
Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholic Faith.
Which Faith except everyone do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly.
And the Catholic Faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity, neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Substance.
For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost.
But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one, the Glory equal, the Majesty co-eternal.
Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost.
The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate, and the Holy Ghost uncreate. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible.
The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Ghost eternal.
And yet they are not three eternals, but one eternal.
As also there are not three incomprehensibles, nor three uncreated, but one uncreated, and one incomprehensible.
So likewise the Father is Almighty, the Son Almighty, and the Holy Ghost Almighty.
And yet they are not three Almighties, but one Almighty.
Page 865
So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God.
And yet they are not three Gods, but one God.
So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords, but one Lord.
For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every Person by himself to be both God and Lord,
So are we forbidden by the Catholic Religion, to say, There be three Gods, or three Lords.
The Father is made of none, neither created, nor begotten.
The Son is of the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten.
The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the Son, neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding.
So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts.
And in this Trinity none is afore, or after other; none is greater, or less than another;
But the whole three Persons are co-eternal together and co-equal.
So that in all things, as is aforesaid, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped.
He therefore that will be saved is must think thus of the Trinity.
Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe rightly the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess, that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man;
God, of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and Man of the substance of his Mother, born in the world;
Perfect God and perfect Man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting.
Equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead; and inferior to the Father, as touching his manhood;
Who, although he be God and Man, yet he is not two, but one Christ;
One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh but by taking of the Manhood into God;
One altogether; not by confusion of Substance, but by unity of Person.
For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and Man is one Christ;
Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead.
He ascended into heaven, he sitteth at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence he will come to judge the quick and the dead.
At whose coming all men will rise again with their bodies and shall give account for their own works.
And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil into everlasting fire.
This is the *catholic Faith, which except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved.
*catholic means universal referring to the one church that Jesus Christ created. It is neither Roman Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, or Anglican. |

Preaching a sacrament? |
|
|
|
Matt 4:17
|
| |
In our circles (Dutch Reformed) we see preaching not as a sacrament but a means of grace. We also would not separate the Preaching of the Word from the sacraments. The Word of God must explain the sacraments-without the preaching of the Bible the sacraments remind just outward signs with no inward meaning. I will quote from the Heidelberg Catechism "Question 66: What are the sacraments? Answer: The sacraments are holy visible signs and seals, appointed by God for this end, that by the use thereof He may more fully declare and seal to us the promise of the gospel, namely, that He grants us freely the remission of sin and life eternal for the sake of that one sacrifice of Christ accomplished on the cross. Question 67: Are both Word and sacrament, then ordained and appointed for this end, that they may direct our faith to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross as the only ground of our salvation? Answer: Yes, indeed, for the Holy Ghost teaches us in the gospel, and assures us by the sacraments, that the whole of our salvation depends upon that one sacrifice of Christ which He offered for us on the cross. Question 68: How many sacraments has Christ instituted in the new covenant or testament? Answer: Two, namely, holy baptism and the holy supper." |

I only beleive Jn 3 was a command to be obeyed. In Acts in the upper room about 120 disciples spoke in tongues when Holy Ghost came. Those in Damaria spoke in tongues when John and Peter layed hands on them. Acts 19 Johns disciples spoke in tongues when Paul layed hands on them they spoke in tongues. Remember those that Paul is writing to has already received the Holy Ghost. Yours in Christ Jim |

1 Cor 12:13

To me it is extreamly biblical. If you read the book of Acts you can see very clearly that this is a biblical event that happened after people where converted or believed...... Jesus told the apostles to recieve the Holy Spirit and the HE breathed on them....He then proceeds to tell them to what or tarrey to recieve power from on high. The Samarians in the book of Acts believed and there weher wonderful miracles and great joy in the city...yet Phillip who is holding the revival in Samaria does not consider them filled or baptized in the Holy Ghost yet....even though they believed and had placed their fath in Christ.... Peter and John came down and prayed that they would get the Holy Ghost Baptism and they did...Now then this happens again in I think about chapter 8 or 9...Paul has ans encounter with some people in Ephesus they believe and had been taught about Jesus...yet they did not have anything but John's(the Baptist) baptism. Paul baptises them in the name of Jesus and the get the Baptism of the Holy Spirit...... To me this is a doctrinal truth that is well grounded in the word of God.... Read the book of Acts and you decide.... Upon recieving this free gift from God you will never believe any other way..I strongly encourage you to seek this out and see what you think... Just pray for God to baptize you in the Holy Spirit and He will and you will know it when He does |

Acts 2:38 is 'not a contradiction to the fuller formula given in Matt 28:19. In Acts the abbreviated form emphasizes the distinctive quality of this baptism, for Jesus is now included in a way that He was not in John's baptism . . . ' (Zondervan NASB Study Bible, p. 1576) --JVH0212 |

Not sure about that one.. Its you again huh? That is wonderful, we are both quite active today huh?... Let me tell you what I think. I think that wehn Jesus said the NAME he meant his name. Because his name is above all names, also in Him dwelleth the fullness of the Godhead bodily. I realize the Trinitarian veiwpoint of "these are Jesus'words. However once again there is a consistency that cannot be ignored. This is found in the book of Acts... every baptism is done in Jesus name and not just by Peter but also by Paul and others. I do not believe that this was an abbreviated form of the Matt 28 but the fullness of it... why abreviate over and over again throughout the entire book.... Lets remember that Johns baptism was not the same as Jesus name baptism.. this iswhy Paul insisted that the two Ephesian be re-baptized or baptized in Jesus name. I realize that this view is only found in yoru "oneness" churches and different sects of the charismatic movement. I thinkthat is however only due to the ormula being changed by catholocism and not because the evangellical or protestant church felt this was the best way...however should any one argue my speal goes this way "I baptize you in the name if the father and the son andthe holy ghost with in whom the fullness of the Godhead swelled bodily...I baptize you in the name of Jesus Christ" A bit lenghty but worth it..... I look forward to yoru response |
