Genesis 37:15 states that Jacob (Israel) was in his old age. Genesis 47:9 Pharoah asks Jacob how old he is and he says, "the years of his pilgrimage are 130". I gather that Jacob was about 111 when Joseph was born. |

It look's like reading this passage that Lamech was born before Seth, so maybe Lamech is a descendant of Cain. |

Cain gave birth to Enoch ,who gave birth toIrad ,who gave birth to Mejuhael,who gave birth to Metusael,Who gave birth to Lamec.
And on the other branch it says:
Seth gave birth to Jared ,who gave birth to Enoch,who gave birth to Metusael,who gave birth to Lamec.

I looked this up in my Bible dictionary, I don't think it will help you much, but give it a read. .................. LAMECH (Heb. lemekh, meaning undetermined). 1. A son of Methushael (Gen 4:18-24) and a descendant of Cain, who had two wives, Adah and Zillah. His sons founded the nomadic life and the musical arts, and invented metalcrafts and instruments of war. Lamech's song (4:23-24) expresses every feature of Hebrew poetry (alliteration, parallelism, poetic diction, etc.). 2. The son of Methuselah (5:28-31). This man, a descendant of Seth, became the father of Noah. His faith is attested by the name he gave his son, Noah (meaning "rest"), and by the hope of "comfort" (5:29) that he anticipated in his son's life. ................... I'm just a layperson without much Bible study (just Bible study at home and at church), but I'll keep trying to answer posts here - it help's me understand God's Word better too! |

Be careful in your reading. In Cain's lineage Lamach's father is METHUSHAEL and in Seth's lineage Lamach's father is METHUSELAH. If you sketch out a family tree of each it is evident that the Lamach in Cain and Seth's descendents is not the same Lamach. This should not be any more of a problem than confusing any other two people with the same name. Also, be careful with the timing issue. Just because Seth is dealt with in chapter 15 following Cain's lineage do not assume that it is chronologically correct.
I would strongly suggest a book by Henderson and Henderson called "Living by the Book" if you want to develop your bible studying skills.

I have not found any reference to the names of their wives but:
Genesis 4:17 tells of Cain's wife and the birth of Enoch.
Genesis 4:26 tells of Seth's son Enosh who was also called Enos. |

After thinking your question was meaningless, I realized you meant Satan. God fought with Satan in Job, which every believer should read. Being a Christian doesn't free us from hardships. Instead, Jesus Christ allows us to realize that the hardships are what bring us to appreciate that He knows how to take care of us. |

Maybe God uses Satan to prove our faith-look at the book Job and Rom 8:28-God uses ALL things for His children's good. Satan in my opinion is really an instrument of God-as crazy as it sounds. Satan intends to harm us(note: he can't see our hearts and know whether we are saved or not). Those who are unsaved but trying in some way to live like a Christian (seed along the path or the rock as Jesus put it in Mark 4:15-20), when he goes after them he will succeed and they will fall away. He wants all to fall away. However, those who are genuinly saved will only be strengthened in the long run by Satan's attacks. |

I can think of two posiblities.
1) Less than 128 years (and probably not too much less than that).
When Adam and Eve left Eden, they had Abel and Cain. When Adam was 130 Years old, they had Seth.
2) Who really knows? It could be that they didn't start counting Adam and Eve's age until after they left Eden (after all they didn't age in Eden) so it could be they had Seth 180 years after leaving and had abel the first year upon being forced out.
I tend to believe the second option but really can't say for sure. |

Were there any other people in the beginning besides Cain, Adam, and Eve? Of course, I am omitting the slain Abel. Genesis mentions that whoever slays Cain will reap the Lord's vengeance sevenfold. But it doesn't say anything about anyone else being around to slay him. Am I missing something? |
