  Which promises?
Bible general Archive 1
Just as a side note, most people who view the Israel as the Old Testament church and the church as New-Testament Israel both embrace the blessings (in a spiritual sense) and the curses. I have not settled in my mind where I stand on this issue yet (having grown up in a thoroughly dispensational background), but to dismiss EVERYTHING said to Israel and even to individuals as automatically not applying to us is an oversimplification. Otherwise, we would have no need of reading the Old Testament at all. Sadly, I see this very practice all-too frequently in the church today.

No, I am not holding out for my slice of the Gaza Strip. However, some promises by God to Israelites contain general truths that apply to the lives of all followers of the one, true God. I especially consider those that mention spiritual reward to be applicable to me as well.

your arguement seems to have errors first of all you say the catholics didn't except any of the books of the apocrypha till the 16th century then why were most of them included in the latin vulgate Which was translated by saint Jerome, who lived from 347 to 420.

You also say it advicates immorall practices.
Assasination is not an immoral practice
Ecclesiastes 3:3 says there is "a time to kill"
Several places in the bible advocate assasination
Numbers 25
Joshua 10
2 Chronicles 23

While I don't know if the apocrypha advocates immoral practices you seem to be arguing because someone is mentioned in these books aas engaging in such practices it advocates them. By using the same logic, I can say the book of Judges advocates prostitution.
Judges 16:1
Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.

Your qoute from the book of Wisdom you say is about Marry I thought it was written long before Marry was born or is their reason to think otherwise.

I know exactly where you are coming from as our pastor does the same thing. It wasn't until I read one of his books that I found out what he was doing, and then it made sense to me. He mentioned that there are fallacies in Christianity such as baptismal regeneration, church membership regeneration, and decisional regeneration. Most true believers know of the first two but not many are aware of the last. I mentioned in another post that there are a lot of so-called believers that think that they are saved because they went forward in someone's service. Really all they did was to jump through someone's psychological hoop. The key is in John 20:30-31
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
The only thing that can help a person when going forward in any service is one on one with God's word being opened up by someone who knows Scripture; a good example is in Acts. Acts 8:26-35
And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. 27And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, 28Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. 29Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. 30And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. 32The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: 33In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. 34And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? 35Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

We must remember that faith comes by hearing God's word not by walking an aisle. There are some that have faith in the fact that they went forward and they tell how they came to God. There is no mention of Jesus Christ and what He did for them. They are no more saved then before they got up out of their seat. I hope this helps but if I were you I would still talk to the pastor.   The Sons of God in Genesis 6:1-4
Genesis
  Dear Jesusman,

You said,"The story of the Flood concludes that all life on the earth, except those in the ark, died. So, the Niphillim could not have survived the flood, unless they were on the Ark."

Please explain the following existence of Giants in the Bible.

Num 13:33

And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

The giants, the sons of Anak. Some have suggested that the spies imagined there were giants about when they saw great walls, sometimes fifty feet high, and supposed only giants could build them. But the measurements of King Og's iron bedstead given in Deut 3:11 testify to the existence of a race of abnormally large people. Deut 2:10,20 and Gen 14:5 indicate that the "giants" date from as early as patriarchal days, and were given various local designations (Emims, Zamzumims, and Rephaim). In the Hebrew of Deut 2:11 the Anakim are called Rephaim (translated "giants"). Josh 11:22 tells us that Anakim remained in three of the Philistine cities - Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod (Jer 27:5, LXX). The family of Goliath in Gath may have been descendants of these earlier people, for in 2 Sam 21:16-22 and 1 Chron 20:4-8 these Philistine giants are called sons of the Rapa'. The fifteenth century texts from Ugarit mention the Rephaim (C. H. Gordon, Ugaritic Literature, pp. 101-103), who probably were not "shades of the dead" but actually these same mighty people (cf. Ugaritic ilnym and Hebrew ('elim); Job 41:17, Heb. Bible; 41:25, Eng.) from the north, whence came iron processing (cf. Og's bedstead).

GIANT

GIANT. An abnormally tall and powerful human being of ancient Bible lands; the rendering of several Heb. words.

Nephilim (nef'i-lim; Heb. nepilim; Num 13:13). The form of the Heb. word denotes a plural verbal adjective or noun of passive signification, certainly from napal, "to fall," so that the connotation is "the fallen ones," clearly meaning the unnatural offspring that were on the earth in the years before the Flood, "and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them" (Gen 6:4). The mention of the great stature of the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, in the evil report that the ten spies brought of the land of Canaan (Num 13:33) together with the LXX rendering, gigantes, suggested the translation giants. They were exceedingly wicked and violent so that "every intent" of the thoughts of men's hearts "was only evil continually" (Gen 6:5). See Merrill F. Unger, Biblical Demonology, pp. 45-52.

Rephaim (ref'a-im; Heb. repa'im, "shades, ghosts"). The aboriginal giants who inhabited Canaan, Edom, Moab, and Ammon. In Abraham's time, c. 1950 BC, Chedorlaomer defeated them. At the period of the conquest, c. 1440 BC, Og, king of Bashan, is said to have alone remained of this race (Deut 3:11; Josh 12:4; 13:12). His huge bedstead of iron is mentioned in particular.

Anakim (an'a-kim; Heb. anaqim, "sons of Anak"). In Num 13:33 the Anakim are classified with the Nephilim on account of their gigantic size.

Emim (em'im), a race that inhabited the country of the Moabites (Gen 14:5) and that is pictured as "great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim" (Deut 2:10).

Zamzummim (zam'zum-im), a giant race inhabiting the land of Ammon (Deut 2:20).

Other References. From a remnant of the Anakim in Philistine Gath came the famous Goliath (1 Sam 17:4). Two of the Philistine giants are mentioned in 2 Sam 21:16-22. The tradition of a giant race persisted in the ancient Near East and goes back in the Genesis account to intercourse between fallen angels and mortal women. Although this so-called angel hypothesis of Gen 6:1-4 is disclaimed by many Bible students, it is a clear implication of the original. Says W. F. Albright, "Yahweh was believed to have created astral as well as terrestrial beings and the former were popularly called, 'the host of heaven' or 'the sons of God'. In Gen 6:1 ff., for example, . . . the (astral) gods had intercourse with mortal women who gave birth to heroes (literally, meteors, nephilim), an idea that may often be illustrated from Babylonian and Greek mythology. But the Israelite who had this section recited, unquestionably thought of intercourse between angels and women (like later Jews and Christians)" (From the Stone Age to Christianity [1940], p. 226).

Bless Israel - say "God bless Israel"?
Gen 12:3
  Hi, Search;

I don't think Christians have any special obligations to the modern state called Israel. This Israel is a political entity created by political means; it is unrelated to the nation created by God to serve His holy purposes. There's a big difference between God and the U.N. ;-)

I think Christians should pray for the people and leadership of Israel, just as we should pray for the Palestinian people and for all the lost who have been misled by the "prophet" Mohammad. While Christians do have a special relationship with the ancient nation of Israel, we should be prepared to see the modern state's many warts as well as its virtues.

I don't think President Bush should single out Israel for any special blessings either. It's presumptuous to assume that God wants Israel to hold onto the West Bank or Gaza. God loves the Palestinians who wish to live in peace no less than He loves the Jews in Israel. It's hard for me grasp, but He even loves the terrorists too. President Bush - and all of us - should ask God's blessings on all the people of the world. As Christians, we should ask for God's gospel to be made known to all lost people, especially to the Muslims and Jews who know the name of Jesus and continue to reject him. And we should realize that Palestinian Christians are suffering alongside their Muslim countrymen.

I'm not saying Christians - including the President - should't express to God our special concern for the Middle East. An extra prayer for peace there certainly won't grieve God. But Isael is a political issue, not a religious one and I think the President's utterances on the subject should be political, not religious.

Just my two hundredths of a dollar.

Peace and grace,

Judges
  robfl253,

Judg 16:1-25
16:1 Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.
2 And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
3 And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron.
4 And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
5 And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
6 And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.
7 And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
9 Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
10 And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.
11 And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
12 Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread.
13 And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.
14 And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
15 And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
16 And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;
17 That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a rasor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
19 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.
20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.
22 Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.
23 Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.
By his lust and letting his guard down, he was betrayed by Delilah and by the strength he was given by his hair as a covering was no longer there.

I hope I have helped. SERENETIME
  Children/Baby baptism Scripture?
Mark 16:16
Hello speshul, and welcome to the forum. I like the way you worded your question, it shows that you are looking for truth and not fiction, when you said that you were looking for answers in Scripture. There are some on this forum that are pushing their denominational beliefs rather then the facts of the Word of God, the reason being that they put them both on the same par, even if God's Word is contrary to their denominational teaching.
Infant baptism is impossible if you consider what has been spoken as truth in the Bible: the reason being that an infant or babies don't have the ability to reason and figure thing out.
Just by using one situation that took place in the Bible should convince you of what the prerequisite for baptism is and that it is impossible for a baby to do.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; (what doth hinder me to be baptized?) 37And Philip said, (If thou) (believest with all thine heart,) (thou mayest.) And he answered and said, (I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.)

Verse 36 says that there is a hindrance or a reason for not being baptized.
Verse 37 tells us that the reason for not being baptized would be that of not believing in the message that was presented, about the person of Jesus, as being the very Son of God.
The one who was being talked to said that he believe the message so as a result we have the action that takes place in the next verse.

Acts 8:38
And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

As you can see from Scripture a baby doesn't have the ability to reason or believe about the message of salvation through Christ.
I hope this clears this up for you. CDBJ
Who are Moab, Edom and Philistia?
Ps 60:8
  Hello Mommpbs

You are correct concerning Moab and Edom. As for Philistia, I had previously done some research in on a different subject. Here is an excerpt:

Cretan Character (1:12-13a) -- Crete was the center of the Minoan maritime empire named after King Minos. The empire flourished from 2000 to 1500 BC and suddenly collapsed around 1400 BC. The Minoans were known to the Egyptians as "Keftiu" and is similar to the Jewish "Caphtor" which Scripture indicates to be the origin of the Philistines who came to Palestine (Jer. 47:4; Amos 9:7). The Caphtorim were originally the descendants of Ham (Gen. 10:14) who later invaded the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea and established five city-states: Gaza (Deut. 2:23), Gath, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Ekron. Also, the Cherethites of David’s bodyguard (2 Sam. 15:18) appear to have been native-born Cretan mercenaries, later coming under judgment (Ezek. 25:16; Zeph. 2:5) with the rest of the Philistine nation.

(end excerpt)

My understanding is that Edom and Moab were wiped out. I've heard that the modern day Palestinians are the descendants of Philistia, but someone else would have to verify that.
