What is the "eye of the needle"?
Mark 10:25
In speaking of the "eye of a needle," what historical evidence is there (please give references) that Jesus was speaking of one of many supposed exits/entrances in the walls of Jerusalem used to help reduce the threat of invasion? I've heard explanations by some that these narrow "needle eyes" allowed immediate access to outside the city walls without having to travel to one of the large commercial/main gates, thus reducing the threat of invasion while still allowing freedom of personal movement.

Rom 3:28
THE BONES OF PETER by Dr. W.A. Criswell
Simon Peter is addressed by our Lord Jesus in the sixteenth chapter of
Matthew in these words: "And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whosoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Because of this passage, there is a vast system of religion built upon Simon Peter. Three things in this ecclesiastical system are avowed about him.

1. That Peter ruled the church.
2. That Peter ruled the church in Rome.

Jerome (d. 240 A.D.) declared that Peter, after being first bishop at
Antioch, and after laboring in Pontus, Galatia, Asia, Cappadocia, and
Bithynia, went to Rome in the second year of Claudius (about 42 A.D.) to oppose Simon Magus, and was bishop of that church for 25 years, finally being crucified head downward in the last year of Nero's reign (67 A.D.) and was buried on the Vatican hill.

3. That Peter's tomb and his bones are under the high altar of St. Peter's church in Rome.

There is no intimation in the Scriptures that the words of our Savior
addressed to Simon Peter made him ruler and head of the church. In the Greek there is a play upon his name --- "Thou art Petros (a stone) and upon thee petra (a stratum of stone) I will build my church." First Peter 2:5 says, "Ye also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house." First Corinthians 3:11 says, "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid which is Jesus." The meaning is self-evident. The foundation, "the petra", upon which Christ will build His church is His deity, which Simon Peter has just confessed upon a revelation from the Father. The stones out of which Christ will erect His church are believing disciples, one of whom
is Peter himself.

The keys of the kingdom here given to Peter as a representative disciple, with the authority of binding and loosing, are given to all the disciples in Matthew 18:18 and in John 20:23.

PETER IN THE EARLY CHURCH

Was Peter ever the ruler of the church? Of any church any time, any place? Not that anybody knows of. The pastor and leader of the church at Jerusalem was James, the Lord's brother (Acts 12:17; 15:13-21; 21:18; Gal. 2:9) This Scriptural account of James is confirmed by Josephus in his Antiquities XX, 9,1, where James' martyrdom is described. Josephus never heard of Simon Peter, but the Jewish historian knows all about the faithful pastor and leader of the Christian church in Jerusalem.

Notice in Acts 8:14 that Peter is "sent" by the apostles along with John to Samaria. Peter is not doing the sending; somebody else is.

Notice in Acts 15:14-21 that at the Jerusalem conference, after Peter made his speech and Paul and Barnabas made their speeches, it is James who delivers the final verdict.

WAS PETER EVER IN ROME?

The second avowal of the Roman hierarchy concerning Peter is that he was bishop at Rome from 42 A.D. to 67 A.D., when he was crucified under Nero. If Peter was in Rome during those years, then the New Testament cannot be relied upon. There is not the faintest, slightest historical foundation for the fiction that Peter ever saw the city of Rome.

1. Paul was converted about 37 A.D. He says in the first chapter of
Galatians (Gal. 1:13-18) that after his conversion he went into Arabia, "then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him 15 days." This takes us to 40 A.D., and Peter is still in Jerusalem.
2. Sometime during those days made his missionary journey through the
western part of Judea, to Lydda, to Joppa, to Caesarea, and back to
Jerusalem (Acts 9, 10, 11). Then came the imprisonment under Herod Agrippa I and the miraculous deliverance by the angel of the Lord (Acts 12). Peter then "went down from Judea to Caesarea and there abode" (Acts 12:19). Herod Agrippa died not long after these events (Acts 12:20-23). Josephus says that the death of Agrippa occurred in the fourth year of the reign of Claudius. This would be about 45 A.D., and Peter is still in Palestine.
Who are sitting in the 24 Thrones?
NT general
  Greetings Righteous Plan!

Revelation 4:4 states, "Around the throne were twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white garments, and golden crowns on their heads."

"4:4 The identity of the 24 elders can be established from a careful observation of the descriptive data. They are clothed in white, indicating purity; seated on thrones, suggesting responsibility and status; crowned with victors’ wreaths (, Gk.); and they themselves bear witness that they have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and, therefore, constitute a kingdom of priests (5:10, “us” NU, M them, “kings” NU a kingdom). Such a description can only represent redeemed humanity. Twenty-four is twice twelve. In the picturesque vision of the New Jerusalem in ch. 21, the city is said to have twelve pearl gates, inscribed with the names of the twelve sons of Jacob, and twelve foundations, inscribed with the names of the twelve apostles. A similar truth is presented in the number of elders. Both O.T. and N.T. saints are gathered as the family of God in heaven and are here represented in the 24 elders." -Believer's Study Bible

"4:4 Twenty-four elders recalls the idea of the heavenly council (see Job 1-2; Ps 82), but here their function is solely to praise God." -Cambridge Annotated Study Bible

"4:4 twenty-four elders. Some understand these to be angelic beings, though it is likely that the 24 elders represent redeemed people who are glorified, crowned, and enthroned. Angels are never said to be given crowns, though believers are (2 Tim. 4:8; James 1:12; 1 Peter 5:4; Rev. 2:10)." -Ryrie Study Bible

Jesus and keys to hell and hades
Rev 1:18
"Last Things, Intermediate State—See Isa 14:9, note; Lk 8:31, note; 16:19-26, note. Hades is the New Testament counterpart to Sheol in the Old Testament. Some interpreters believe Hades refers to the general realm of the dead. They believe the statement is that Christ holds the keys to death itself and to the realm of the dead. All people will appear before the great white throne, the only judgment, at which both believers and unbelievers will be judged. Death does not hold the last word about human existence. When it has closed its doors upon a life, Christ still holds the keys to death and opens the way for believers into paradise. For believers, it is comforting to know Christ has the final word. Some see Hades here refer to the intermediate state for unbelievers, corresponding in this view to paradise for believers. Hades will yield to the authority of Christ and deliver up the dead therein to the judgment of the great white throne (Rev 20:13). According to this view, the Great White Throne is a judgment only for unbelievers (Rev 20:11). Mt 25:31-33; 2 Co 5:10; and Rev 20:4 are thought to describe separate and different judgments." (Disciple's Study Bible)

"The keys of Hades and of Death describes Christ’s authority over those who have died physically and over their present resting place, which will be emptied and destroyed at the time of the great white throne judgment (20:11–15)." (Nelson NKJV Study Bible)

"1:18 the keys of death and of Hades. The keys denote the authority of Christ over physical death and Hades, the place that temporarily holds the immaterial part of the unbeliever between death and the ultimate casting into the lake of fire (see 20:14)." (Ryrie Study Bible)

"keys of death and of Hades. Absolute control over their domain" (Zondervan NASB Study Bible)

"I am he that liveth, and was dead—I am Jesus the Savior, who, though the fountain of life, have died for mankind; and being raised from the dead I shall die no more, the great sacrifice being consummated. And have the keys of death and the grave, so that I can destroy the living and raise the dead. The key here signifies the power and authority over life, death, and the grave. This is also a rabbinical form of speech. In the Jerusalem Targum, on Genesis 30:22, are these words: “There are four KEYS in the hand of God which he never trusts to angel or seraph.
1. The key of the rain;
2. The key of provision;
3. The key of the grave; and
4. The key of the barren womb.”
In Sanhedrin, fol. 113, 1, it is said: “When the son of the woman of Sarepta died, Elijah requested that to him might be given the key of the resurrection of the dead. They said to him, there are three KEYS which are not given into the hand of the apostle, the key of life, the key of the rain, and the key of the resurrection of the dead.” From these examples it is evident that we should understand , hades, here, not as hell, nor the place of separate spirits, but merely as the grave; and the key we find to be merely the emblem of power and authority. Christ can both save and destroy, can kill and make alive. Death is still under his dominion, and he can recall the dead whensoever he pleases. He is the resurrection and the life." (Adam Clarke Commentary)

"the keys of hell [Hades] and of death—The order is reversed in the earliest manuscripts. The “keys” are symbolic of authority; the one who has the keys opens and shuts the gates at will (Ps. 9:13, 14; Isa. 38:10; Matt. 16:18). Christ now has authority over death and Hades." (New Commentary on the Whole Bible: NT)

Jesus tears down the gates of hell?
Eph 4:8
  Greetings Brother charis!

Here are a few Scriptures that I have found that refer to specific 'gates': Job 38:17 ('deep darkness'); Psalm 9:13 ('of death'); Psalm 107:16,18 ('bronze, death'); Isaiah 38:10 ('gates of Sheol'); Lamentations 4:12 ('enemy could enter the gates of Jerusalem')..

I do not think that there is a clear, specific verse that states that "Jesus tore down the gates of hell".. I believe that the 'theology' of this statement is correct since Jesus has conquered both sin and death by His Resurrection. Besides that, I believe that this statement could be a product of or 'recycled' from Matthew 16:18 (which has taken on many alternate 'meanings' throughout history!). :)

I hope this helps you charis, dear Brother in Christ!

Jesus tears down the gates of hell?
Eph 4:8
  Dear Steve and Nolan,

How about "Be gracious to me, O Lord; Behold my affliction from those who hate me, Thou who dost lift me up from the gates of death;" Psalm 9:13 NASB and perhaps the imagery in "It is I who says of Cyrus, 'He is My shepherd! And he will perform all My desire.' And he declares of Jerusalem, 'She will be built,' And of the temple, 'Your foundation will be laid.' Thus says the Lord to Cyrus His anointed, Whom I have taken by the right hand, To subdue nations before him, And to loose the loins of kings; To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut:" Isaiah 44:28,45:1 NASB?

This paraphrase is very common, yet Scripture reference is hard to find, yes?

Blessings in Jesus' name, charis
  Prerequisite-infallibility?
1 Cor 12:27
  Dear RCScroll, and fellow saints,

To quote Nute Gunray, "You assume too much."

Brother, I hold you in the highest regard. However, the argument against present-day apostolic ministry still seems to be based on a deification or beatification of the 13 (the 12 plus Matthias and Paul, minus Judas Iscariot), and the assumption that the presence of false apostles negates the presence of true apostles. Again (and again) I hear the *new* revelation requirement. Where might I find that in Scripture? In any case, I do not think that a present-day apostle must be the sort of super-person you imply he must be. I don't think that the early church apostles were the super-people some try to make out of them. Honestly, my friend, you yourself seem to claim some authority when you state that your interpretation is the correct and accepted one :-)

While it may be true that the 'delivery' of the Gospel to the church is complete, the ministry of the Gospel continues. To try to differentiate between the 'office' and the ministry is just traditionalist gobbledegoop. (with all due respect)

By the way, please do not try an equate my belief that of the Mormons. To do so is incendiary, and rabble-rousing, and does not become us. Never have I claimed that present-day apostles have *new* revelation knowledge or super-Biblical abilities.

Indeed, the church has all that it needs to attain the unity of the faith, "...that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:17 NASB. Are you saying that we do not need ministers to bring this forth? Tell me, has the church been very successful at attaining unity?

Of course, in order to make your theory work, you must assume that Barnabas, Silas, Andronicus, and Junia were present in Jerusalem at Christ's resurrection. This is assuming that there is somewhere in the Bible that requires all apostles to be eyewitnesses.

Please, don't do the "We conclude..." bit. It is condescending and arrogant. You conclude, yes?

Finally, I ask, are you of the 3-office group, 4-office group, or the no-office group? Personally, I don't place much importance on the 'office' or title. I think that Peter, Paul and the other saints would be appalled at their ministry to Christ and His church being labelled 'office.'

Friend, it is indeed a privilege to discuss the Word with you.

  number of apostles
Rev 4:4
  Greetings schwartzkm!

Revelation 4:4 states, "4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white garments, and golden crowns on their heads." (NAS)

This is the closest verse that I can find that would correlate the number of the tribes of Israel with the number of NT apostles immediately after the ascension of Jesus. There are several interpretations of this verse and I will include two as 'valid' opinions..

The first one is:

Both O.T. and N.T. saints are gathered as the family of God in heaven and are here represented in the 24 elders." (Believer's Study Bible)

"The number 24 is often understood to reflect the 12 Israelite tribes of the OT and the 12 apostles of the NT." (Zondervan's NASB Study Bible)

And the second:

"4:4 twenty-four elders. Their joint rule with Christ, their white garments (19:7,8), and their golden crowns (2:10) all seem to indicate that these 24 represent the redeemed (vv. 9-11; 5:5-14; 7:11-17; 11:16-18; 14:3; 19:4). The question is which redeemed? Not Israel, since the nation is not yet saved, glorified, and coronated. That is still to come at this point in the events of the end. Their resurrection and glory will come at the end of the 7 year tribulation time (cf. Dan 12:1-3). Tribulation saints aren't yet saved (7:9,10). Only one group will be complete and glorified at that point- the church. Here elders represent the church, which sings the song of redemption (5:8-10). They are the overcomers who have their crowns and live in the place prepared for them, where they have gone with Jesus (cf. John 14:1-4)." (The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible, 1997 Word Publishing)

  Was Jesus a captive?
1 Pet 3:19
Scripture ... Psalm 24:7 "Lift up your heads, O gates, And be lifted up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in!"

The Psalm is about His entry into Jerusalem and verse 7 doesn't say angels at the gates could not recognize him.

Yes, God did forsake Him - but he was not the captive of Satan.

1 Cor 15:20 is about first fruit from the dead (phyiscal death). It cannot be spiritual beacuse our spirits will not experince death.

End of discussion, until you can show where Jesus was the captive of Satan.

Here is some commentary to Revelation 21..

"ANALYSIS OF CHAPTER 21., 22 1-5

THE whole of chapter 21, and the first five verses of chapter 22, relate to scenes beyond the judgment, and are descriptive of the happy and triumphant state of the redeemed church, when all its conflicts shall have ceased, and all its enemies shall have been destroyed. That happy state is depicted under the image of a beautiful city, of which Jerusalem was the emblem, and it was disclosed to John by a vision of that city--the New Jerusalem--descending from heaven. Jerusalem was regarded as the peculiar dwelling-place of God, and to the Hebrews it became thus the natural emblem or symbol of the heavenly world. The conception having occurred of describing the future condition of the righteous under the image of a beautiful city, all that follows is in keeping with that, and is merely a carrying out of the image. It is a city with beautiful walls and gates; a city that has no temple--for it is all a temple; a city that needs no light--for God is its light; a city into which nothing impure ever enters; a city filled with trees, and streams, and fountains, and fruits--the Paradise Regained. The description of that blessed state comprises the following parts:--

I. A vision of a new heaven and a new earth, as the final abode of the blessed, #Rev 21:1. The first heaven and the first earth passed away at the judgment, #Rev 21:11-15 to be succeeded by a new heaven and earth fitted to be the abode of the blessed.

II. A vision of the holy city--the New Jerusalem--descending from heaven, as the abode of the redeemed, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband--representing the fact that God would truly abide with men, #Rev 21:2-4. Now all the effects of the apostasy will cease; all tears will be wiped away, and in that blessed state there will be no more death, or sorrow, or pain. This contains the general statement of what will be the condition of the redeemed in the future world. God will be there; and all sorrow will cease.

III. A command to make a record of these things, #Rev 21:5.

IV. A general description of those who should dwell in that future world of blessedness, #Rev 21:6-8. It is for all who are athirst; for all who desire it, and long for it; for all who "overcome" their spiritual enemies, who maintain a steady conflict with sin, and gain a victory over it. But all who are fearful and unbelieving--all the abominable, and murderers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and liars--shall have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone. That is, that world will be pure and holy.

V. A- minute description of the city, representing the happy abode of the redeemed, #Rev 21:9-26. This description embraces many particulars:--

(1.) Its general appearance, #Rev 21:11,18,21. It is bright and splendid--like a precious jasper-stone, clear as crystal, and composed of pure gold.

(2.) Its walls, #Rev 21:12,18. The walls are represented as "great and high," and as composed of 'jasper.'

(3.) Its gates, #Rev 21:12,13,21. The gates are twelve in number, three on each side; and are each composed of a single pearl.

(4.) Its foundations, #Rev 21:14,18-20. There are twelve foundations, corresponding to the number of the apostles of the Lamb. They are all composed of precious stones--jasper, sapphire, chalcedony, emerald sardonyx, sardius, chrysolite, beryl, topaz, chrysoprasus, jacinth, and amethyst.

(5.) Its size, #Rev 21:15-17. It is square--the length being as great as the breadth, and its height the same. The extent of each dimension is twelve thousand furlongs--a length on each side and in height of three hundred and seventy-five miles. It would seem, however, that though the city was of that height, the wall was only an hundred and forty-four cubits, or about two hundred and sixteen feet high. The idea seems to be that the city--the dwellings within it--towered high above the wall that was thrown around it for protection. This is not uncommon in cities that are surrounded by walls."

[Taken from Barnes' Notes on the NT]

  God does create evil.
Is 45:7
In his discourse entitled That God is not the Cause of Evil, Saint Basil the Great writes the following: "But one may say, if God is not responsible for evil things, why is it said in the book of Isaiah, 'I am He that prepared light and Who formed darkness, Who makes peace and Who creates evils' (45:7)". And again, "There came down evils from the Lord upon the gates of Jerusalem" (Mich. 1:12). And, "Shall there be evil in the city which the Lord hath not wrought?" (Amos 3:6). And in the great Ode of Moses, "Behold, I am and there is no god beside Me. I will slay, and I will make to live; I will smite, and I will heal" (Deut. 32:39). But none of these citations, to him who understands the deeper meaning of the Holy Scriptures, casts any blame on God, as if He were the cause of evils and their creator, for He Who said, "I am the One Who makes light and darkness", shows Himself as the Creator of the universe, not that He is the creator of any evil.... "He creates evils", that means, "He fashions them again and brings them to a betterment, so that they leave their evilness, to take on the nature of good".
[St. Basil the Great, op. cit. 7, 94-96. In this particular passage, St. Basil carefully makes a distinction between the Greek verbs "ktizo" and "dimiourgo", both of which are generally translated into English as "create". However, "ktizo" has a long history, beginning with the Sanskrit kshi, which, as in early Greek, meant "to people a country", "to build houses and cities", "to colonize". Later, in Greek, the word came to mean "to establish", "to build up and develop", and finally, "to produce", "create", "bring about". Having in mind these other connotations of the verb "ktizo", St. Basil discerned the proper implication of the word in this context and hence made a point of emphasizing this distinction.]
