  study on self-control
Galatians
Do you have any study on Self-control? (Galatians 5:23)
  study on self-control
Galatians
Certainly! I have studied the subject of "self-control" before in the Bible and found some great verses that give some explanation.. Proverbs 25:28 "Like a city whose walls are broken down, is a man who lacks self-control." (NIV)Romans 12:1 "Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship." (NAS95)James 3:2 "For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the while body as well." (NAS95)See also Titus 2:2, Proverbs 6:6-11.

A Brown, Welcome to the forum.

Galatians 5:18 says "But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law." To look at this verse we need to start in vere 16, where we are told to live by the Spirit, so we won't gratify the sinful nature ... Romans 7:14ff deal with the conflict and many other passages, including Galatians 5:17.

Verse 18 starts with "but" ... so we are not under the Law, which was tutor (Gal 3:24-25) ... we led by the Spirit. It doesn't mean we are free to disobey the Law or sin.

I hope my answer was clear.

Galatians
Greetings a brown and Welcome to the Study Bible Forum!

Here is alittle on Galatians 5:18...

"5:18 led by the Spirit...not under the law. Take your choice; these are mutually exclusive. Either you live by the power of the Holy Spirit which results in righteous behavior and spiritual attitudes (vv. 22-29) or by the law which can only produce unrighteous behavior and attitudes (vv. 19-21). Cf. 1 Cor. 15:56." (MacArthur Study Bible)

"5:18 led by the Spirit. See Rom. 8:14. not under the law. Not under the bondage of trying to please God my minute observance of the law for salvation or sanctification (see note on Rom. 6:14)." (Zondervan's NIV Study Bible)

"5:18 The Spirit, not the law, sanctifies us." (The Ryrie Expanded Edition NASB Study Bible)

"GALATIANS 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit—If you submit to the teachings and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Ye are not under the law—You are under a different dispensation—the dispensation of the Spirit. You are free from the restraints and control of the Mosaic law, and are under the control of the Spirit of God." (Barnes' Notes on the NT)

"5:18. In summary, Paul emphasized that a godly life is not lived under the rules of the Law but is a life led by the Spirit. It was important for the Galatians to know that just as justification is not possible by works so sanctification cannot be achieved by human effort. This of course does not mean that a Christian is totally passive in either case for the response of faith is necessary—faith in Christ to save and in the Holy Spirit to sanctify." (The Bible Knowledge Commentary)

I hope that these help!

Galatians
Hi a brown, I agree with Steve here and might narrow down the comparison with Romans.

I like to compare Romans 8:14-15a with Gal 5:16-18.

Romans 8:14, "For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a Spirit* of adoption as sons..."
Gal 5:16, "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit*, you are not under the Law."

So we are not slaves under the Law but are adopted sons of Spirit. Christ sentenced sin and (through Him) the requirement of the Law is accomplished for us who walk in the Spirit. Romans 8:3b,4

"Walk" and "belong" are key word studies for being led by the Spirit. We walk in the Light and we also keep His word. 1John 2:5, "but whoever keeps His* word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to WALK in the same manner as (He) walked."
Gal 5:24, "Now those who BELONG to Christ (Jesus) have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."

I like the comparison of Gal 4:4,5 and Rom 8:3

Why is fruit singular and not plural?
Galatians
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperence.

Why is the word " fruit' singular used and not "fruits" plural.
Why is fruit singular and not plural?
Galatians
I think it is because all those things together are the fruit of the spirit. The Spirit of God instills all of these things in a person, so they are referred to collectively as "the fruit".
Why is fruit singular and not plural?
Galatians
  speaking of one
Why is fruit singular and not plural?
Galatians
The fruit of the Spirit is singular because it is only one, and that is love, but love manifest it's self in many way though. It is like a cluster of grapes, a cluster is only one cluster but that one cluster is made up of many individual grapes.

Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance are manifestations of the fruit of love that is bestowed on believers by the Holy Spirit, they are not self generating.
The word group is a singular word but in order to be a group it is made of more then one; fruit of the Spirit functions the same way.

(The true mark of a disciple)

John 15:1-8
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

Dear markhaus,Galatians1:6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-7 which is really no gospel at all. Many things are going on in the background here, as we study Acts all the way through from chapters 1-28 we have many examples of different sects teaching against all the Apostles of Christ trying to destroy the church. The examples for the Galatian churchs are given in Acts chapters 14 and 15.At this time the church had begun to center around Atioch in the region of Galatia. The answer is true.God Bless rpvzgc

  is masterbation a sin?
What do i say to someone about drinking
Galatians
I was ministering to one of my friends and i was telling her that the bible says to be sober at all times. She stated to me that Jesus drank wine and for one of his miracles turned water into wine. What do i tell her about drinking? i know it's not okay to drink, so how do i answer her question and still prove to her that she shouldn't drink?
  is masterbation a sin?
Galatians
This is a very good question which touches on at least two aspects of sin. When one is engaged in the act of masterbation, there is at least the physical desire to ejaculate which one might consider fornication hence a lusting of the flesh and thus a sin; commonly, the act involves either looking at or visualizing an object which would fill the mind and thus the heart with lustful desires and this makes the act covetous (because one desires something out of the lust of the flesh) and thus a sin. Jesus states (Mt 5:28) that even if looking at a woman (object) with lust in your heart, one has committed adultery (coveted). This is why we are to try to keep our minds free of sinful and evil thoughts; eventually, theses thoughts find there way into the heart.
Why is fruit singular and not plural?
Galatians
It is singular because all those attributes are aspects of the one fruit. Just as a peach is juicy, sweet, fragrant, etc. so the fruit of the Spirit bestows joy, peace, longsuffering, etc.
What do i say to someone about drinking
Galatians
People of biblical times drank wine mainly due to the lack of good drinking water. It is okay to drink as long as you are not trying to get drunk or "drown your sorrows away". However, if one has a drinking problem, one should not drink and others around them should not drink as this would provide a temptation. Ultimately, when God does not want one to drink, the Spirit will move to convict them, and thus, they will work out their own salvation.
  would it be wrong if...
Galatians
but wouldn't that be wrong to tell a sinner that? i mean wouldn't they think that they could drink every day and serve God too...i know i would because i could easily say, "well, i'm not drunk and don't have a drinking problem so God understands"?
  would it be wrong if...
Galatians
If we were talking to a 'sinner' we would show him Christ who is better that wine. Alot of problems can be anesthesized (sp?) that are soved by freedom in Christ. We do nto need to get drunk when we have the joy of sins forgiven. mY problems are now in God's capable hands and I have a new family of brothers and sisters who suport me.
  would it be wrong if...
Galatians
The best thing you can tell someone is to be careful. Show them the dangers, like how many out there are killed because of drunkeness. I used to drink heavily in my college days...and regret every minute of it. But now I have better control of what I drink and when and where. I don't have the strong desire to drink beer or wine like i did 10 years ago. I sometimes have wine with my dinner and it is just me and my wife. No one else knows and it is in our own home....now I would think twice about ordering a glass in public, because one we have our daughter with us and we drove to the restaurant...so thinking about your actions is key..we have to have wisdom and understanding in everything we do.

Thank you for your kind praise.
  would it be wrong if...
Galatians
If that were the case, (not being drunk and not having a drinking problem) then God may not have a problem. What you must remember is that God has a personal relationship with everyone; if He is displeased with our actions, He will let us know. The best recourse you can take in regards to your friend is present them with all of God's word as it relates to drinking and to doing His will. Amongst these two topics, I believe your friend (and you for that matter) will be able to determine what is acceptable for them; even if it is drinking, you must be able to accept it as it is based in His word.

Tell me about ancestoring worshipping and circumsion.
  Galatians and Matthew
Galatians
I am not sure what your question is about ancestor worship, as we worship a living God. But circumcision was instituted by God as a sign of His covenant with Abraham.

In Galations and Romans, Paul shows that now,Gal 5:6 For [if we are] in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith activated and energized and expressed and working through love.
