Nolan, Maybe.
-Daniel couold of told him.
-Cyrus could of read it himself.
-He didn't know ... maybe until later.
Erz 1:2-4 and 6:3-5 is the fulfillment of this prophecy.
Contrast the reason, that he may know He is the Lord, the God of Israel (Isa 45:3) with his decree in Ezr 1:3. He also says "The Lord, the God of heaven" (v 2), the God who is in Jerusalem (v 3). By the rest of verse 3, I do not think he was a follower of God.
Isa 45:1-6 is about Cyrus ... maybe to verse 13.
I recall Alexander the Great being told he was in prophecy and did not level Jerusalem. My brain remembered this but not where it is found.

Nolan, I will not go wierd.
Since I am not the Lord, I don't know how He did it ... but, as with Moses' Pharaoh, whose heart God hardern ... He does His part and they still had a choice. Neither were not followers of God.
Now to your other question, if he knew God had already written about him ...
-if he knew before God's stirring, maybe there was some resistance, so God had to ask him again.
-He could of used Daniel to present the idea.
-if he did not know, God had to plant this idea in his head. It was very unusual for letting people to have a temple to their god.
As I was typing I thought of God's visit to Abimelech (Gen 20:6ff). He moves men, but, we still have a choice-tho we may not like the results.

Greetings PaPa!
The only references that I can find for dishes of pure gold are in Exodus 25 and in Ezra 1:9, both of which are describing the artices that belonged to the temple of the Lord.
So to answer your question: the Lord owned dishes of pure gold.

666 Adonikamim or 667? |

Should we believe Ezra who says there were 666 Adonikamim or Nehemiah when he says there were 667? (Neh. 7:18) Or is it possible both were right? How? |

Nolan, if you look at both list, there are other differences. I read that it could be a copiest error. The Adonikamim are alos listed in Ezr 8:13.
We now that the Bible is inspired, but if someone cannot read or copy the numbers - it should not make the Bible any less vivible.

Blessings Steve!
I agree, it could just be a copyist's error.. And even though I cannot begin to explain this apparent 'contradiction', it does not take away anything from the fact that the Bible is the perfect Word of God! It could be seen as remarkable that these two accounts in Ezra and Nehemiah are so very close in precision, even though they do not entirely match up perfectly in the translations that we now have in English.

Dear TOFT, Since Nolan pointed you to the online sites, let me encourage you to get a Serendipity Bible. I have one.
I have found it important to have a Bible without study notes. It can have a few cross references. Plus wide margins, so you can write you own notes. The reason is, you should record your own thoughts, before you read what others say. When you run out of room, get a new one.

What does it mean to tear one's clothes? |
|
|
|
Ezra 9:3
|
| |
In Ezra 9:3, Ezra tears his clothes- his garment and his robe- and even pulls some hair from his own head and beard. This is a common way to express grief, distress, or humiliation (v.5). Tearing of one's clothes can also be found in Gen. 37:29,34; Josh. 7:6; Judges 11:35; 2 Sam. 13:19; 2 Chr. 34:27; Esth. 4:1; Job 1:20; Isaiah 36:22; Jer. 41:5; and Matt. 26:65. When Ezra says that he pulled some hair away from his own head and beard, it is unique in the Bible where a person would do this. We read about the shaving of one's head or beard (Job 1:20, Jer. 41:5, 47:5, Ezek. 7:18, Amos 8:10). When Nehemiah was confronted with the same problem of intermarriage, he puled out the hair of the offending parties (Neh. 13:25) instead of his own. What is the full significance of the 'tearing' of one's clothes or robes and why? |

Ezra 9:3
|

Regarding the rending of the garments: These external acts speak of intensity of emotion and feeling. All the scriptures no doubt reveal a physical rending/tearing. But, my intent is to get to the meaning behind the acts. It is my conviction that behind our study of the “letter” is the significance of the spirit of the matter. The “spirit” of the acts speak to me of being equated with brokenness, mourning in spirit, and humility (being contrite or poor and needy in spirit/heart). There is no doubt a lot of tradition and meaning to the physical acts but God in the scripture following says “Let’s get to the ‘heart’ of the matter”.
Joel 2:12-13a (NAS)
“Yet even now,” declares the LORD,
“Return to Me with all your heart,
And with fasting, weeping, and mourning;
And rend your heart and not your garments.”
Passion and emotion is a wonderful study but let’s remember that Essau sought for repentance with tears (Heb 12:16), and he did not find it. Being sorry is not enough, grief is not enough. God wants to see us seek in spirit and truth.

You have answered your own question quite well by virtue of your included study. I can only suggest that God seems always to desire that we get to the root of the matter. We can analyze the "letter" but let's also seek out the spiritual significance behind the external act.
Joel 2:12-13a (NAS)
“Yet even now,” declares the LORD,
“Return to Me with all your heart,
And with fasting, weeping, and mourning;
And rend your heart and not your garments.”
Let's keep seeking His truth with all our hearts. |

Ezra 10:1

According to this scriptures they were ungodly women. Heathen in nature. And were corrupting Gods people.
But it does not state what nation they came from. When God brought his chosen people to the new world he kept them isolated from sinners. Those who were to watch over them were supposed to be righteous. This women were atheist, with no regard to Gods chosen people.

Why God told the Jews to Divorce. |

Ezra 10:10

Subject: "God commanded the Jews to divorce"
Ezra 10:10-11 ESV
And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have broken faith and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel. Now then make confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."
Note
In Ezra 10:10-11 "God actually commanded the Jews to divorce by separating from these idolatrous wives. ... Though God hates divorce, there are times when it is the lesser of the evils and would prevent a future and even greater spiritual catastrophe."
MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997
Again: Ezra 9:2 "For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has intermingled with the peoples of the lands; indeed, the hands of the princes and the rulers have been foremost in this unfaithfulness." When cross referenced with : -
Deut 7:1 "When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and stronger than you,
Deut 7:2 and when the LORD your God delivers them before you and you defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to them.
Deut 7:3 "Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons.
Deut 7:4 "For they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods; then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you and He will quickly destroy you.
Deut 7:5 "But thus you shall do to them: you shall tear down their altars, and smash their sacred pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.
Deut 7:6 "For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.NASB
AND
Ex 34:15 otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land and they would play the harlot with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone might invite you to eat of his sacrifice,
We are dealing with separate events in the History of Israel when it was in the best interest of the people, firstly when entering Palestine and secondly when returning there after the captivity in Babylon, not to intermarry with the nations.
Note:
10:6-44 All the returned exiles gathered in Jerusalem to hear Ezra’s rebuke and prescription for the problem of mixed marriage of Jew to non-Jew. The men are to separate themselves from the peoples of the land which in later centuries became a Jewish technical term for non-Israelite residents in the land and from foreign wives. Thus the pattern was set for strict ethnic purity to be observed by those who see themselves as God’s covenant people. The rule was applied to Jewish officials, priests, Levites, and the people of Israel in general.
Note: Accordingly, the wives and children of the returning Jews who had intermarried were to be sent away.
Cambridge Annotated Study Bible NRSV With Apocrypha Edited By
Howard Clark Kee Parsons Technology, Inc. Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Weeping, in this case, is good, but reforming is better. As to being unequally yoked with unbelievers, such marriages, it is certain, are sinful, and ought not to be made; but now they are not null, as they were before the gospel did away the separation between Jews and Gentiles.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary On The Whole Bible By Matthew Henry
Yes God did tell the Jews to divorce their foreign wives and to send them home with the children because the purity of the Jewish faith was paramount. The Exodus reference suggests the strong influence a wife might have on her family.

Ezra 10:10

Please note they were divorced with a certificate. These wives were not "put away" or "sent away" so there was no legal way to retrieve their ex-wives, and it would have been a very serious sin to remarry someone you have divorced. The study already done on this is very well done what I add is so minor.

There is only one reason to divorce and there are NO EXCEPTIONS. NO EXCEPTIONS? Are you sure? Is that your final answer?
Ezra 10:10-11 (ESV)
And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have broken faith and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel. Now then make confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."
In Ezra 10:10-11 "God actually commanded the Jews to [divorce] by separating from these idolatrous wives. ... kalos-all the old testament shows us this message--I am-have faith in me-I am the lord thy God thou shalt not have other gods before me. In this instance He is saying again "don't go to other gods-divorce yourself from -anything- that seperates you from ME. This is the law and judgement. Jesus came to fulfill the law and brings you forgiveness. God isn't "commanding" divorce.he commanded we not get into bed with false gods to begin with--but since we did---we must divorce ourselves now---repent . Christians are the "bride "of Christ. Ezra calls us to repentance and becoming part of the true bride. God's love to you- angel1 |
