  Did Solomon repent?
Ecclesiastes
In the book, did Solomon repent of his sins or am I reading too much into the text?
  Did Solomon repent?
Ecclesiastes
Did Solomon repent of his sins in the book of Ecclesiastes? Good question, and the answer may be, yes he did or, no he didn't, but I tend to think he did. Here's why: The mood of the book is generally one of sadness. In good part autobiographical, it is the philosophical world-view of one of the wisest of men who finds himself, as it were, facing a mid-life crisis. Solomon had had it all -- wealth, fame, power. He had done it all -- enjoyed the pleasures of food and drink, of women and song, and even the forbidden venture of chasing after foreign gods. Still and all, he came to a crossroad in his life and looked back upon the path he had trodden only to conclude that it had been all vanity, meaningless, empty. His life had led him only to frustration and despair. Everything "under the sun" was no more satisfying than "chasing after the wind" -- an expression he uses nine times in his book. The first eleven chapters are filled with these negative "vanity of vanities" observations.....But in the twelfth and final chapter of this sad book, Solomon begins to set a new, more uplifting, tone. He says, "Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come....The Preacher sought to find delightful words and to write words of truth correctly....The conclusion, when all has been heard, is fear God and keep his commandments......For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil." .......Now, whether Solomon took his own advice is the question of the centuries. Solomon ends his book by pointing his people to the commandments of God. I am comfortable with the thought that he may well have pointed himself in the same direction. --Hank
  death ??????????????????
Ecclesiastes
where do you go after you die? heaven ? hell ? or the grave till Jesus comes ??
  death ??????????????????
Ecclesiastes
See Eccles. 3:20, 12:7, 'Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.'
So, the body is buried and decays away in the grave, but the breath of its life goes back to God who gave it. In the resurrection of the dead in Christ, the spirit is returned to the resurrected body, is "changed" to a new form, and, we may suppose joined together, the new body with its spirit lives for ever more!
  sept 11
Ecclesiastes
alot of people have been having a problem understanding the events of sept. 11. I tell you the truth, thing of horrific nature have been happening for probably as long as man has been on this earth. there will be events just as horrific after that event as well. and to understand this better one has to realize that we cant fully understand the event because we are not meant to. one way to understand this kind of thing better is to read the book of Ecclesiastes. understanding such things is a chasing after the wind.
I recently learned how the prophet Isaiah died and it made me sick and stuck in my head all day. that was just as horrific as sept 11. if you want to know how he died email me at mrchadly@yahoo.com I dont think everyone wants to know thats why it's not here.

  Greetings mrchadly,

According to Jewish tradition ("The Ascension of Isaiah"), he was sawed in half during the reign of Manasseh (cf. Hebrews 11:37).

I'm sure that this information about the death of Isaiah has been posted before. If you haven't seen it before, then you have now.

Who actually wrote the book of Ecclesiastes? Did Solomon write or did someone else, using Solomon as the main person, write this book.

Ecclesiastes
  Greetings, Ministermac!

Most people agree that it was Solomon who wrote Ecclesiastes, based on 1:1,12,16; 2:4-9; 7:26-29; 12:9; cf. 1 Kings 2:9; 3:12; 4:29-34; 5:12; 10:1-8. (1)

Blessings to you,

Makarios

Eccles.3:15-That which has been is now and that which is to be has already been;and God requires that which is already past. Isn't this compatible with einstein's theory?
  time?
Ecclesiastes
  Hello,

Actually this would be closer to the Jewish views concerning prophecy and future events than Einstein's theory. To the Jews, the events that were prophecied by the Prophets sent by God were viewed as Past actions. Since God never lies, and that these events were told from God that they will happen, the Jews wrote them down in past tense. So, the question wasn't "Will these events take place?", but was "When are they going to take place?". In the Jewish perspective, these events were already completed in God's eyes, so they wrote them down as such.

I hope this helps.

  Dear Angel1,

It would be interesting to determine, whether or not Einstien (independently and by by means of scientific inquiry), came to the same conclusion as Soloman. But, the more important question (at least itseems to me)is: What does this passage teach concerning the nature of God Himself?

What is your understanding of the soverign rule of God over His creation?

God Bless Angel1,

Brother John

  Dear Bruce,

You wrote: "To the Jews, the events that were prophecied by the Prophets sent by God were viewed as Past actions".

Would you please expand upon your statement? I am not familiar with this viewpoint and would be interested to discover just how you arrived at it.

Bother John

PS I also await your response to my answer of your
question to me: "Ok. Paul makes it clear that God does as he chooses. That still doesn't answer the next question. If it is God's spoken desire that all of mankind are to be saved, and that he has
the very power and ability to do so, then Why doesn't he do it? What is stopping him from
saving all of mankind?

My understanding is that when anybody comes up with a new idea, you can be sure somebody somewhere else has already thought of it.

I'm intrigued and would like to hear more about your Einstein thoery

  Hello,

In the Hebrew, the verbs are formed in various "stems". These are similar in function to the Greek tenses. In matters of prophecy, a majority of the verbs used are in a past tense with implications in the future. Hebrew doesn't have a future tense like the Greek. They do have one that functions similar to the Greek aorist tense. IN the Aorist, it is past tense most of the time, but under certain circumstances it can carry a future meaning. This is how the Hebrew stem in question functions. I would like to give the name of this stem, but I don't have my hebrew materials handy. I think it's the Pu'al stem, but I'm not certain. I'll look it up.

That's the grammerical side. Now, theologically, God has told the prophets that these events will happen at one time or another. With that, and the nature of God that He cannot lie, It is only fitting to place the prophecies in a past tense. In the eyes of God, these events have already happened, as it were.

  Thanks Bruce,

The first paragraph was a bit over my head, but I think I caught the drift of it.

If I understand the second paragraph (the theological side) it means past present and future are all the same to God. He knows what is to take place because it has always been.

Whew! God really is soverign.

Thanks Again,

John

  Hello,

Don't worry. It took me a while to grasp it also. When I started to look at it from a perspective similar to God's, then it began to make sense.

  Ecclesiastes 30:7-9
Two things I asked of Thee before I die...
Keep deception and lies far from me.....
GIVE ME NEITHER POVERTY.... OR RICHES......
Feed me with the food that is MY PORTION,
Lest I be FULL AND DENY THEE, and say ,
"Who is the Lord"?
Or lest I be in WANT and steal and profane the
name of my God.
My comment is: BE CONTENT WITH WHAT YOUR
PORTION IS.
Paul in the New Testament said that he had LEARNED HOW to be CONTENT whether he was very poor or living well.
It's not the condition that makes us sweet or bitter....it is the way we REACT and the ATTITUDE we have.
GOD GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.
Do you have financial blessings? Share them!
Do you have financial needs? Be content and humble yourself looking to the Lord for what He will supply. SEEK YE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND ALL THESE THINGS SHALL BE ADDED UNTO YOU.
Ahhh...Sweet Contentment
Have Jesus? Then you truly are a very RICH soul!

  Excellent thoughts, DoggieGrace!

But one thing: There is no such thing as 'Ecclesiastes 30:7-9'.. The book of Ecclesiastes has only 12 chapters.

ecc 4:12 3fold husband, wife and christ?

Can ecclesiastes 4:9-12 be applied to marriage not just companionship. and verse 12 be husband, wife and christ when it refers to the threefold cord not being easily broken???
ecc 4:12 3fold husband, wife and christ?
Ecclesiastes
  Hello darice

I think any Scripture dealing with companionship will find fulfillment in marriage, so this passage would be applicable.

I have heard sermon illustrations comparing the three-fold cord to man, wife, and Christ, so it's not a stretch to think of it that way.

  Hello drillmill

The writer is probably Solomon. He identifies himself as a preacher, the son of David, and a king in Jerusalem. Couple that with some of the things mentioned in the book (giving himself over to wisdom and learning) along with Solomon's apparent love of writing, and you have a pretty good case.

WHO WROTE THE BOOK OF Ecclesiates
Eccl 1:1
  Dear drillmill

We read in Ecc. 1:1
"The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem" and in v12 "I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem"

I believe Solomon is the author under the power of the Holy Spirit. In this book we read that even the best that natural man can do apart from God is futile and empty.
