  Aren't pictures wrong?
Acts 17:29
Romans 3:23 applies. I'm not even sure if it is the first account in the Bible, but consider the golden calf in Exodus. It appears that it may have been cast as an object used for worship of the true God, but it was wrong! To do so today, with pictures, statues and icons is no less wrong. The ten commandments also cover this issue.
  Is God responsible for evil?
Bible general Archive 1
God is sovereign, and he is responsible for giving us the ability to choose between good and evil. The ability to choose in and of itself is good, but the use of the ability may be bad. There is little or no glory in forcing opinions on your children, and likewise, there is little or no glory for God in forcing us to obey His commandments, or even in forcing us to believe in Him.

JESUS SAID IF YOU LOVE YOUR MOTHER AND FATHER MORE THAN ME, THEN YOU CANNOT BE MY DISCPILE IS THIS A CONTRADICTION TO THE COMMANDMENT OF GOD TO HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER?
  HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER
Matt 22:37
In Matt 22:35-38 Jesus is asked and answers the question, "What is the great commandment?" He answers in MAT 22:37 And He said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.'
Now since Jesus is God, if you love anything or anyone more than Jesus, you are violating the great commandment, for you cannot love God with all of your being and love another more. By loving God as we should, we can love our parents to a greater degree than we could otherwise. Jesus said that He came to fulfill the law, and again He does so by enabling us to honor or parents to a greater degree than we are able to without Him. I personally know this to be true for before I knew Him I did not honor my mother and father, but now it is not an option, and I love to do it.
  What was Jesus writing?
John
Was Jesus writing the Ten COmmandments in the sand, or was he writing the sins of each person in John 8 when he confronted those people?
sins of father repaid by son?
Genesis
Exodus 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. (NAS)

"punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me" notice the words at the end of this read: "of those who hate me".
The full formula includes the important qualifier "of those who hate me."
Is any type of contraception allowed?
Bible general Archive 1
Charis, your answer is excellent. It shows a great deal of knowledge and understanding -- Scriptural, biological and social -- of the subject. There's not a word of your answer that anyone could refute with Scripture.

. . . One group that has traditionally forbidden the use of any method of birth control except abstinence is the Roman Catholic Church. They have their reasons, with which I'm not actually familiar. But, along with you, I see no place where the Bible expressly prohibits the use of contraceptives.

. . . On the other hand, many Scriptures and Scriptural principles could be cited to argue against abortion, the USA's favorite form of birth control, especially abortion on demand. The first one that comes to mind is the Commandment "Thou shalt not kill," Exodus 20:13. Nor do I find any portion of Scripture condoning child abuse, of which abortion is the worst form, resulting in death. And none of the teachings of Jesus or the apostles give approval to the abuse of women. Since half of all abortion victims are girls, is this not abuse of women?

. . . Well, I'm sure you're familiar with the arguments against abortion. Thanks, Charis, for an on-target, thorough answer to the question. Keep them coming. Every day I search out Answers and Notes written by you. Your answers are always well thought out, but they are never dull. Take care.

  What is the point?
1 Thessalonians
Why would you want to? Dear EveryHome, I am not making fun of you, or making light of your question. I simply think that examining one's motives for pursuing this is a good thing. I am not Pre-trib, Mid-trib, Post-trib, or even Rapture with a capital 'R,' so I won't be trying to convince you of any of these. I cannot see that any one of these 'theories' is carries the weight of Biblical certainty. I have studied extensively these since watching a movie that had elements of all of these, almost 20 years ago. My conclusion is that, though the topic is worthy of investigation, focusing on it is a diversion. In fact, to some it is a trap and a fixation. Why would you wan to spend a lot of time looking into something that has been expressly hidden from us? "Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time is." Mark 13:33 I look at the context of this and get from it that we are not to go around looking for signs, investigating every earthquake and war. Nor are we to say, "Here is Jesus!" and everyone flocks to this place and that, seeking a 'special' blessing or understanding. No one fellow, group, or place will have a 'special' knowledge of the coming of Christ. Period. Instead, live your life for Christ, NOW! Obey His commandments where He has set you. Preach the Good News that He is Lord, and He will return, not about the return. As I look into the Bible, I can see no 'special' thing we can do to prepare for a rapture of any kind, except to live in Christ to the fullest of the faith-gift given us. All else is diversion and vanity. The phrase 'so heaven-bound that they are no earthly good' applies to many who know 'all' about the end times, but their Christian lives are in a shambles. The good books on the 'end-times' and 'rapture' will give you a overview of the scriptures, Old Testament and New Testament, but then tell you the same thing, "So...Live in Jesus!" That is the 'bottom line.'

Blessings in Jesus' name!
  Invalid 'gifts?'

remeber you the words that were spoken before of the Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.Jude 1:17 past tense.Peter said that you may _(remember) what was said before of the prophets, and of the commandments of us the Apostles .past tense and we can remember thank God we have the word. Why would we have to remember if we still had them to warn us in person. The office of an apostle maybe could be described as a church planter today but they would not be doing miricles, for I have yet to see a blind man healed instantly or a dead man raised from dead, you only here you dont see . If an Apostle was walking the face of this earth he would only have to remain in one place all manner of sickness and deformaties would be healed. And we could have a news crew there 24-7 for all would be healed. Prophets told of the messiah coming, the office of a prophet to day tells of what he did and can do for them. one foretells of future events concerning Christ, and the one for today gos forthtelling of the events that took place. jeremiah 23 discribes what people who say they speak for God are verse20 and on.   Who do we know the bible is realy God's
John 1:1
We know the Bible is the inspired word of God because first, From the beginning to the end the Bible is about Jesus(John 1) secondly if you follow all of the Biblical commandments you will recieve all of God's promises and above all else If you will believe Jesus is the true son of God and that he died for our sins and rose the third day and ask Him to come into your heart and forgive you of your sins you will be filled with the Holy Spirit and know without a doubt that the Bible is the word of God just as I do. Praise Jesus
Living together and not married (Part 2)
Bible general Archive 1
It's pretty simple my friend. God gives each one of us knowledge and wisdom. With His gifts we are able to know right from wrong. His 10 Commandments give us a strong foundation.
Living with your girlfriend would not be honoring her. Personally, I don't think it is appropriate to live with your girlfriend. You should marry her and honor her and God. If the Bible does not clearly answer any questions you may have, look to the Church for guidance.
What does Bible teach about anger?
Bible general Archive 1
It's not a sin to be angry. It IS, however, a sin to act upon that anger. If someone cuts you off while driving, you're allowed to get a bit perturned, but you're not allowed to run the guy down and buss a cap in him! (Translation: You're not allowed to run him/her down and shoot him).

The Bible shows people being angry, and God did not exactly punish them for their anger alone; rather, He punished them for acting upon it in a way that was displeasing to God (which, in fact, they all were; Moses destroying the Ten Commandments out of anger, for example). Ephesians 4:26 states "Be ye angry, and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath". It is very easy for us to get angry when we are wronged (hey, even Jesus was angry when he turned over that table in the Pharisees' temple; he was angry at their hypocracy), but we must remember not to act upon that anger.

Hope that helps.
Why do we not keep the 7th day Sabbath

Why do we not keep the 7th day Sabbath
Col 2:16
Are the Sabbath laws binding on Christians today?
. . . We believe the Old Testament regulations governing Sabbath observances are ceremonial, not moral, aspects of the law. As such, they are no longer in force, but have passed away along with the sacrificial system, the Levitical priesthood, and all other aspects of Moses' law that prefigured Christ. . . . Here are the reasons we hold this view.
. . . In Colossians 2:16-17, Paul explicitly refers to the Sabbath as a shadow of Christ, which is no longer binding since the substance (Christ) has come. It is quite clear in those verses that the weekly Sabbath is in view. The phrase "a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day" refers to the annual, monthly, and weekly holy days of the Jewish calendar (cf. 1 Chronicles 23:31; 2 Chronicles 2:4; 31:3; Ezekiel 45:17; Hosea 2:11). If Paul were referring to special ceremonial dates of rest in that passage, why would he have used the word "Sabbath?" He had already mentioned the ceremonial dates when he spoke of festivals and new moons.
. . . The Sabbath was the sign to Israel of the Mosaic Covenant (Exodus 31:16-17; Ezekiel 20:12; Nehemiah 9:14). Since we are now under the New Covenant (Hebrews 8), we are no longer required to observe the sign of the Mosaic Covenant.
. . . The New Testament never commands Christians to observe the Sabbath.
. . . In our only glimpse of an early church worship service in the New Testament, the church met on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7).
. . . Nowhere in the Old Testament are the Gentile nations commanded to observe the Sabbath or condemned for failing to do so. That is certainly strange if Sabbath observance were meant to be an eternal moral principle.
. . . There is no evidence in the Bible of anyone keeping the Sabbath before the time of Moses, nor are there any commands in the Bible to keep the Sabbath before the giving of the law at Mt. Sinai.
. . . When the Apostles met at the Jerusalem council (Acts 15), they did not impose Sabbath keeping on the Gentile believers.
. . . The apostle Paul warned the Gentiles about many different sins in his epistles, but breaking the Sabbath was never one of them.
. . . In Galatians 4:10-11, Paul rebukes the Galatians for thinking God expected them to observe special days (including the Sabbath).
. . . In Romans 14:5, Paul forbids those who observe the Sabbath (these were no doubt Jewish believers) to condemn those who do not (Gentile believers).
. . . The early church fathers, from Ignatius to Augustine, taught that the Old Testament Sabbath had been abolished and that the first day of the week (Sunday) was the day when Christians should meet for worship (contrary to the claim of many seventh-day sabbatarians who claim that Sunday worship was not instituted until the fourth century).
. . . Sunday has not replaced Saturday as the Sabbath. Rather the Lord's Day is a time when believers gather to commemorate His resurrection, which occurred on the first day of the week. Every day to the believer is one of Sabbath rest, since we have ceased from our spiritual labor and are resting in the salvation of the Lord (Hebrews 4:9-11).
. . . So while we still follow the pattern of designating one day of the week a day for the Lord's people to gather in worship, we do not refer to this as "the Sabbath."

Who moved the Sabbath to Sun.?
Col 2:16
The 7th day Sabbath is a part of the 10 commandments. It points to God has our creator. The claim that we no longer have to observe it is nonsense. Christ himself observed it. He said He was Lord of the Sabbath. The Apostles kept it long after Jesus death and ressurection. And it is still binding today. God never changes, no shadow of turning. It is in the heart of His royal law, the foundation of His government in heaven and on earth. Read the book of James concerning breaking just one of the commandments, we become guilty of them all. As far as the day of the week. Look at your calander what day is the first day of the week? Sunday. what day is the 7th day of the week. Saturday. God created the sabbath day at creation. As a day of rest for man. To honor and worship the creator. The Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath.
Don't we all think that God knows what is best for us.
  Why do we disagree?
1 Thessalonians
Dear wdc, Don't give up hoping! As one who (also) has had to scrap an awful lot of 'baggage' (still more to go!), I firmly believe that it is not only possible, but probable that we will find unity as we come closer to the return of our Lord. Even this forum has helped me to learn about discussion and disagreement without bigotry. I never had the opportunity to have faith as a child, I found Jesus for the first time at the age of 25. Even so, the faith that was poured upon me from heaven was wrapped in a fleshly package of opinion, tradition, and prejudice. Several years ago I realized (the Spirit revealed) that the 'package' wasn't going to pass through the 'narrow gate.' Nobody's 'package' will! Not one denomination will be represented in the presence of a holy God. I firmly believe that Joel tells us that the Spirit will reveal this truth to all believers. Some will accept it and repent, and others will not accept it, and the divisions will become so profound that they will be absurd. The details of the manner of this restoration are hidden, and obviously no human power, system, or organization can claim it as their own. The Holy Spirit will do it! I await eagerly His return, and in the meantime attempt (feebly and humbly) to serve Him and obey Him. "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." John 14:15 NASB. I do not believe these commandments are rules, laws, or even complicated 'man-written' creeds. They are the truth and the wisdom of God.

In Christ Jesus, charis
Do you keep ALL of the Mosaic Law?
Col 2:16
You do error my friend. The Sabbath was not a Mosaic law. But Part of the ten commandments written by the finger of God in stone. All of the other ordinances and laws were through Moses written Through them. Why do you think He wrote them in Stone. Think about it.
Do you keep ALL of the Mosaic Law?
Col 2:16
You do err. (And the verb is err, not error.) To say that the 10 Commandments are NOT part of the Mosaic Law is the most absurd thing I've ever heard. Whether written by the finger of God or by the hand of Moses, every word of the Pentateuch was verbally inspired by God Himself.
  Why the 7th day bent?
Col 2:16
Dear fliha, You are correct that Jesus rebuked the hypocrisy of the oral law, but He also rebuked the attitude of Israel toward the written law. Our Lord spoke repeatedly to discern and obey the intent of the Law. Indeed, as a Jew living in Israel, He was obliged to obey the Law, but this was a matter of His heart. Look at the case of the adulterous woman; by Law, He should have been throwing stones at her. In fact, his words to the hypocrites saved her, and gave her new life. As the only sinless Person present, He had every right to 'cast the first stone,' and by Law, was bound to do so. He taught us a new law under a new covenant. A superior covenant. Even if you are a Jew living in Israel today, the majority of the Law has been done away with. He is the Lord of the Sabbath, giving us a new rest and a new peace. This comes not from satisfaction of the Law, but from a heart toward God, like David. The ultimate law of grace was active by faith since Abraham, and is now poured forth in the fulness of Christ. As Paul said, why would we want to return to be bound by something that no person was able to keep. Pride in keeping the Sabbath and a few other select laws does not make anyone righteous. If you feel better going to church on Saturday, convinced that your form of Christianity is superior, wonderful! Please remember, though, that attempting to 'keep' one portion of the Law binds you to the whole of it.

We are free to obey His commandments and to live in them.

Blessings and peace upon you in Jesus' name, charis
  Why the 7th day bent?
Col 2:16
In the beginning,God created heaven and the earth in 6 literal days, on the 7th day He rested, and made this day Holy. God new that man needed a day of rest (sabbath means rest) to renew, rest, worship and remember Him as God and creator. God reaffirmed this to Moses with the ten commanment law written with His own finger, engraved in stone.(the only scripture that was not given through men).
What day is the Sabbath day? Saturday. Read the account of the crucifixion in the book of Luke. Christ was crucified on Friday( the preperation day),rested on the sabbath day in the tomb,(saturday),and arose on the first day of the week(sunday). Christ kept the sabbath, even in his death. The apostles kept the sabbath, even Paul. He taught the Jews and the Gentiles alike on the sabbath day.
Sould we keep the Sabbath today? Yes! I challenge anyone to show me from scripture where God changed the day to sunday.(first day of the week)
How did the change take place? Study chruch history. It happened during roman times when the church and government became one. During the reign of Constintine,(a pagan and nominal christian), who worshiped the sun.there festival day was sunday (the venerable day of the sun).In order to unite the empire, with the churches apostasy,to incorporate the pagans into the chruch (along with many of there practices and idol worship),the day was slowly changed to sunday.
Will we keep the Sabbath in the future? Read the book of Isa.66th chapter.verses22-23. Yes we will.
Gods ten commandment laws have not changed nor will they change.
Was this part of the law given by inspiration through Moses? No. the mosaic law and ordinances were nailed to the cross with Christ. He was the fulfilment of these. The Sabbath is Gods seal ( as mentioned many times in scripture) His rightful
claim as God and creator. How can someone justify pulling the 4th commandment out of the ten commandments and and deceide not to keep that one command. Would it be ok to not keep "thou shalt not Murder",or say "thou shalt no commit adultery"
its that one ok not to keep. You can try and explain it away anyway you like. The facts are as they stand.Sunday keeping is a product of man,not Gods plan for us.
Sabbath because it is a rule?
Col 2:16
Dear Rayteck, Do you keep the Sabbath because it is a rule? Are the Ten Commandments observed only because God commanded them? All of the Ten should be kept because of their intent, and because we want to please our Lord and Savior.

Indeed, your argument is well presented. But Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath. The intent of the Ten Commandments is intact, but the religious observance of any 'special day' has has been superceded by the fact that every day is special in Christ Jesus. This cannot be said of the Sabbath. We gather on Sunday because the early Christians from the beginning (Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2) found a new beginning in Jesus. This was continued, as confirmed by Ignatius (circa 110AD). It was made an 'institution' in the 4th century, but, had been practiced from the time that the Lord revealed to Paul and others the salvation of the Gentiles. Yes, Paul went to the synagogues on Saturday, where else would he find the Jews? But he taught Christ on the first day of the week. (I have studied church history a bit :-)

By the way, you said that Jesus 'rested in the tomb' on Saturday. I don't think so... He was breaking the Sabbath by working, a holy work that gave you and I freedom from death and Satan.

How you get 'observe the Sabbath' from Isaiah 66 is beyond me. It says clearly that we will worship Him daily, that new moons and sabbath are inconsequential.

Friend, every day is the Lord's day. Church history shows that the early Christians gathered on the 'first day' to celebrate a risen Savior, even the Jewish Christians did so after the destruction of the Temple. If you choose to worship on Saturday, this is allowed. I pray that you gather because it is the Lord's day to you, not because it is 'Commandment Number 4.'

Blessings and love in Jesus' name, charis
  Why the 7th day bent?
Col 2:16
Genesis to Revelation is Gods Holy Word. The old covenant is not the book of law and bondage and the new covenant the book of grace. Genesis to Revelation is a book of grace. King David sins should of cost him his life. (Gods grace)
Just as the adulterous womens sin should of cost her life. (Gods grace)

Salvation is through grace by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He who is the way, truth and life. Our life in Him is based on relationship, not legalism. This applies to us as well as the old coveenant saints.

The Torah (first 5 books) declares Gods desire to have relationship with His people, and He declares that He has given us His law (Torah-instruction) for our sakes.

The ten commandments was written by the hand of God Himself. God did not make a mistake and change the day. Man did that. God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Again thankfully keeping sabbath or any other law does not make us righteous only trusting in the Lord. I do not think going to church on saterday is a superior way, nor eating certain foods, celebrating christmas and easter etc etc is superior. Our relationship with God is what is important.

We are free to obey His commandments and to live in them. God bless

Is it possible to love God as commanded?
Gal 3:24
Question: Is it possible to love God as commanded? (?)Unanswered Not Specified Brent Douglass Sat 03/31/01, 10:43am Is the command to "LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH" in Mark 12:29-34 and elsewhere something that we, as Christians indwelt by the Holy Spirit can attain with God's enablement in this life, or is this merely an impossible command designed to humble us in our sinfulness?

. . . My answer: The Scripture Jesus quoted in Mark 12:29 and following is part of the Mosaic Law. Note that in Mark 12 the question was asked by a Jew living in the age of the Law (prior to the age or dispensation of Grace) and answered by a Jew, who also kept the Law. (Since Jesus was entirely without sin, it is obvious that He kept ALL the Mosaic Law, never once stumbling in even one point. By definition sin is the transgression of the law.) So to answer the question, "What is the purpose of the Law?" would also be to answer your question, "Why was the commandment in Mark:12:29-34 given?"

. . . Here is my best answer, according to my learning and understanding of what the BIBLE teaches re the Law and the believer's relationship to it.

. . . 1) No one was ever saved by keeping the law. Gal 3:11 "But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for 'the just shall live by faith [trusting]'."

. . . 2) The command in Mark 12 is a quote from the Mosaic Law found in Deut 6:4-9 and also in the book of Numbers.

. . . 3) What is the purpose of the Law? This is a question whose answer I pursued for years. I finally found it in the NT Scriptures (right where it belonged). You'll find the answer in the third chapter of Romans and other passages, including the entire book of Galations, but especially Gal 3:19-25. Quoting Gal 3: 24-25: "Therefore the law was our tutor [literally, 'child conductor', a slave whose duty it was to take care of a child until adulthood] to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith has come, we are no longer under the law." See also Rom 3:28. Whole books have been written on the subject of the Law and its relationship to NT believers. But the entire answer to the question, "What is the purpose of the Law?" is summed up in the above quote (Gal 3:24-25) and in the following single sentence written by John MacArthur: "The law was our tutor which, by showing us our sins, was escorting (leading) us to Christ".

. . . 4) The Law (including Deut 6:4-9) was given, in part, to show us our sinfulness.

. . . 5) James 2:10 (ASV 1901) "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one [point], he is become guilty of all." Note: If one places himself under the law, how many commandments does he have to keep -- 10? No, all of them, all 613 commandments contained in the Pentateuch. (I do not mean to imply that this is what you are doing, sir, only that there are some who would do so, beginning with keeping the Sabbath and dietary laws and ending who knows where.)

. . . To summarize: Gal 3: 24-25: "Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith has come, we are no longer under the law." John MacArthur: "The law was our tutor which, by showing us our sins, was escorting (leading) us to Christ".
Is it possible to love God as commanded?
Gal 3:24
Dear Brent Douglass, Your question has as a scripture reference, Galatians 3:24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. Is this part of your question?

In answer to the question, I believe that it is impossible to have 'perfect' love toward the Lord. Though it would be nice to believe that you do completely love Him, I don't think I have ever met anyone who obeyed every commandment, and treated every member of His body, the church, with love, or loved those for whom He died, the world, with perfect love. The part about "merely an impossible command designed to humble us in our sinfulness" might be a bit stronger than I would state it. I think that, like infinity or perpetual motion, the "near-perfect' attainment is a worthy goal, to be pursued with zeal, but the 'perfect' is reserved for our Lord Jesus. Indeed, as you state, we should be humble enough to acknowledge that Christ Jesus will always be perfect, and we will never be capable of 'catching up' or 'passing' Him, which was the sin of Lucifer.
The encouragement of the Holy Spirit is to never stop trying.

Good question. Blessings in Jesus' name, charis
Sabbath because it is a rule?
Col 2:16
I didn't even read your whole note/question/reply/whatever it is, but I don't think we have to honor the ten commandments any more. I don't know the verse, but it says that we should esteem every day the same, and that we should live for the Lord every day. The Bible says that the letter (law/10 commandments) killeth. We are in the new covenant so we should be living according to the new testament. Hope I helped.

Can you tell me if I am suppose to be a "cheerful giver" as I desire, or "obey my husband" as I also desire to do? How do I know which commandment God wants me to obey?
