Abel's sacrifice better than Cain's? |

Heb. 11:4 says that Abel offered a better sacrifice than Cain. That is a clear statement in Scripture. We next need to ask, "Why was Abel's offering better?" It is clear from the Gen 4 account that first each person's offering is described and then the text says the LORD had regard (or did not have regard) for that person AND their offering. So, the person was connected to the offering because -- as Hebrews points out -- the kind of offering brought was a clear demonstration of the person's faith. Finally, if one studies the nature of sacrifices made throughout Scripture, it is clear that God requires a blood sacrifice to atone for the sins of His people. It is completely a sound inference to say that Abel's offering was pleasing because it was a blood sacrifice. In the previous chapter, God kills an animal (blood) to get the skins for Adam and Eve's clothes. Later, Abraham is about to make a blood offering of his son Isaac, (though he substitutes a ram instead). This is the most important reason for understanding that - IN CONTEXT - Abel's offering was preferred was because it was a blood offering: because it was a type of the ultimate blood sacrifice and substitute, Jesus Christ. Abel's blood even cried out from the ground! Abel himself was a picture of Jesus Christ: though innocent he was killed, and the Lord replaced him, "resurrecting" the line of the promised Seed of the woman, by causing Eve to give birth to Seth. Just like the word "trinity" is not in the Bible but is clearly taught, so it is legitimate to infer the meaning of something like this when so much of the rest of Scripture in totality is in support of it.

There is no solid conclusive evidence in scripture to give a date of how old the earth is. It is possible to calculate the ages of Adam and his discendants and GUESS the date, but this is not conclusive either. Many have suggested that the earth could be as old as evolutionist say, justifying that answer by saying God could have created it that way or a day with God is like a thousand years to us. This dont stand either if you understand the Bible as Gods perfect Word...inerrant and infalliable, God Breathed...It says that a day is a day, morning and night and it was a day...period. Nothing in the text...which is where our answers have to come from...says that we should belive otherwise. Lets not limit God by suggesting that He would NEED billions of years to create the world and all that is in it. As far as scientist dating the earth by carbon dating and such, note...conclusively, one must first date an object that has a known age to be sure that your dating method is accurate. I dont think we have and witnesses to items billions of years ago. How can they be sure the date is correct. Is it accurate plus or minus a few million years. Think about it, a few million is a huge amount of time to be off. Also note... It does not require millions of years to form land masses like the Grand Canyon. Scientist know for certain that massive gorges were formed in just hours when Mt St. Helens erupted. Evolutionist have a real hard time with events like a world wide flood. It messes up the Geological column...ie. fossils are stirred up and settle in a ramdon order, not in the approiate strata layer like they need... For a really good argument to give and evolutionist, ask they How do scientist date fossils? They say by the strata layer that they are found in...Then ask How do you date the strata layer then? The answer is in any Encyclopedia...strata is dated by the fossils found in them! This is a circular argument. These types of Evolution break downs are limitless. Consult the Institute for Creation Research, ..ICR.. on the web for more. By the way, The THEORY of evolution is not even a theory. The scientific method requires a theory be something that is testable and retestable with reasonably close results...evolution is not testable first of all and definately not retestable. It is only a hypothisis or maybe better said a scientific guess. Last, as you try to find out how old the earth is, keep these thoughts in mind...1.God does not need millions of years to create. 2.In the beginning God created the heavens and earth...and not once after that did He feel it necessary to prove it to anyone, nor do we bare that burden. 3.ONLY, evolutionist NEED the earth to be a certain age, and that is very, very old. Else their guess would not have enough time to make all of those mutations. How old is the earth? Im not really sure. Not billions for certain! The Biblical guess is somewhere between 6 to 15 thousand years. My answer is ..it is not as important as many think.. Did God create all of it just the way He said He did?...is a more improtant question. If you dont believe Genesis chapters 1-11 to be totally accurate and literal, then the rest of your Bible is of no use to you. God does not need a human justification or scientific explanation of His ability to create. |

Reading this verse rules out the idea that man has been created in the image of God and his heavenly court of angels. It does show us that man is created from the image of God alone, so there we have a plural reference of God being two or even three persons. I believe this is one of many supporting arguements for the Trinity of God. |

Jesus, the Messiah, Deliverer, Son of God and King of Kings, was concieved by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. The fullness of the Godhead dwelt bodily in Jesus while he was in every way a human being. Jesus was not fathered by any man, since no man had been with Mary (Luke 1:34). And Joseph, Mary's betrothed husband, at first struggled to accept this fact but later accepted it (Matthew 1:19-25). But Jesus had to be 'brought up' or 'brought forth' from the line of David; he Himself had to find his earthly beginnings and achieve his earthly ministry while being of the Kingly heritage of David. God's promise to David is ultimately fulfilled by Jesus as David's 'descendant' of whom it was promised in 2 Samuel 7:16, and in the line of Judah in Genesis 49:10: both fulfilled by the Lord Jesus Christ! And Luke 3:23-38 shows the 'direct line' genealogy from Mary, the vessel in which God used to deliver His only Son into this world, all the way down to David, and it even goes from David to Adam! And if you look in Matthew 1:1-17, you can see how Joseph, who was the step-father of Jesus, was also in the Kingly heritage, being a descendant of King David. So Jesus was in fact a descendant of David as well as being part of the royal heritage as promised by God. Now you ask: "What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?" (Matthew 22:41-46) They said to Him, "The son of David." Jesus said to them, "Then how does David in the Spirit call him 'Lord', saying, "THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, 'SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET' '? If David then calls him 'Lord', how is He his son?" Very good question! Here is the answer: Jesus was a descendant of David while he dwelt upon this earth, but He has always been and has always existed as God. He was never created by God but has always existed as part of the Godhead with His Father and the Holy Spirit. In this passage (Matthew 22:41-46), David called upon the Lord during his life, even the Lord Jesus! Now he says, 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD'.. This is God the Father in heaven saying to God the Son, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET." So God the Son ascended into heaven to assume His Lordship at God the Father's right hand until the time when Jesus will return to earth in the Second Coming of Christ. So this is how the Lord Jesus is David's Lord (whom David called upon) and also David's son, or descendant, at the same time. I hope that this explanation helps. Though I concur with JVH0212 that Jesus has declared the believer righteous, I must add that this 'point of salvation' sinlessness is academic. We are not free from self, sin, temptation or the 'spirit of the age' until the Lord returns and restores us to a pre-Adam state through resurrection. You might say that we have won the (eternal) war, but the (present) battles rage on daily. Except Jesus, no one I am aware of is without sin. Even the patriarchs and the apostles had their failures. We are to pursue righeousness, and hope in it, not claim it falsely. If the church were truly made up of sinless people, there would be no divisions, no 'backsliders,' no problems at all. If we say, "Those troublemakers are not counted as righteous, they are hell-bound," there wouldn't be anybody in the church at all. I know that I won't 'cast the first stone.' This said, I stand by my first answer. For the present time, there is no sinlessness. Anyone who lays claim to present perfection is living in denial. |

I have a couple questions with what you stated.
1: Where does it say that Jesus is omnipotent? Jesus says in Mat 24:36 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven nor the Son, but only the Father." If Jesus were omnipotent as you say, He would have known the day and hour.
2: God has predetermined that his plan of salvation will be carried out. This does not mean that he has predetermined who will and will not be saved. God wants everyone to be saved (If you need several versus to back this up, let me know). He provided the means for that to happen through the death and ressurection of Jesus. It is our choice whether to accept his Gift or not. From the very beginning, Adam and Eve made the choice to eat from the tree of knowledge even after God told them not to. In Josh 24:15, "But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... In 1 Kings 18:21, the worshippers at Mt. Carmel were invited to choose that day whom they would serve, either Baal or God. In Isaiah 5:20, the people were certainly capable of choosing between good and evil. Why are we given the warning in Matt 7:15 ("Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.") if we were predestined to be saved or not? Matt 7:21 says that only the people that choose to do the will of God will enter Heaven. Luke 13:3 tells us that unless we repent (our choice), we will perish. Matt 19:23-24 says that it is harder for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. If we were predetermined, then wouldn't it be just as easy (or hard)? John 3:16 ...whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. In John 7: 17-18, If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself... In Romans 1:17-32 is clear that man has chosen evil and is not predetermined to do so. Heb 9:27-28 tells us that we are to face judgment when we die. What would be the need of a judgment if we were predetermined. There are many more versus that talk about our choice which I will post if needed.
3: To renounce your salvation would be to turn your back on God, to no longer believe or accept his Gift. To no longer follow the teachings of Christ. Granted, you could always say that person wasn't really saved then. But then what would you say would have happened to that person if they died prior to that drastic change? And if you say that the person must not have been chosen by God to be saved and was only fooling themselves when they truely believed in Christ and thought they were saved then can you say for sure that anyone is saved? Did Jesus die for everyone or just for a select few? I can show you several versus that show that He died for all, can you show one that says otherwise? Then if Jesus did die for all, how could there be some that God predetermined not to be save?

How do you then interpret the verses I listed (and the many others) that talk about "our choice"? I've talked to other Calvinists and they all ignore the verses about our choice in the Bible and quote out a few verses that can be interpreted to fit their needs. The "Free Will" theory holds up throughout the Bible while the "Predestined" theory holds up only in a few parts of the Bible and each of these parts can also be interpreted using the "Free Will" theory.

You mentioned John 6:44. I agree that no sinner can make the first move in the salvation process. Fortunately, God has already made the first move through Jesus. It's now up to us to accept this. Also, if you put John 6:44 in context and read the entire section, you'll see a whole different meaning. John 6:38-40 - tells us that Jesus is sent to do the Father's will which is that EVERYONE who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life. John 6:44 in simply saying that no one is going to Heaven unless God Allows it. God wants everyone to be saved (this is backed up by other verses I'll supply if needed). John 6:45 "...EVERYONE who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me." It doesn't say "only those I choose will come to me" John 6:47 "I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life." John 6:51 "...This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." He's saying that he will give his life for the world, not a elect group in the world.

Eph 1:4-5,11. Again, put it in context. God predestined us as a whole not a group to have the opportunity to be saved. When it talks about us being predestined for foreknew, it's talking about God's plan - that through Jesus we can be saved. When it talks about the Elect, that's simply another way to talk about the people that have accepted Jesus. Today, we use the terms Christian, born-again, believers, etc... Back to Ephesians, at the end of chapter 1, Paul tells them that they were included in Christ when they heard the word of truth, the gospel of their salvation. In other words, when they heard about Jesus, they were included in God's plan. Paul next states that "Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,..." Notice the "Having believed" -- this implies that they had a choice to believe or not.

A couple other question to ponder: If God chooses only some people to be saved and not others and we have no control over that then why did Adam and Eve eat the fruit? Why did God flood the world to remove all the evil people? Why did Jesus have to die for our sins? If God decides alone who will and will not go to Heaven, why did these things (and others) happen? But if God wants everyone to be saved, but through his great love allows us to make the choice, then these things are easily explained. |

Dear Ostmarkgasse, Genesis 6:4 states that there are 'sons of God' and 'daughters of men.' Since angels are spiritual beings, they cannot procreate with humans, and are not the 'sons of God.' Therefore, these 'sons of God' could mean 'of Adam,' compared with the creation of man in Genesis 1:27, who would be the 'daughters of men.' If we insist that Genesis 1:27 speaks of Adam and Eve, indeed I can only guess that Cain married and unmentioned sister. (I don't favor this interpretation) |

How can it be wrong for one person to marry another person just because he or she is of different ethnic background. Did not Moses marry and Ethiopian woman? And when Aaron and Miriam grumbled against Moses, it was because of their jealosy of Moses position, not his marriage to the Ethiopian woman. |

Satan's temptations used against Christ are similar to those used against Eve.
1) Appeal to physical appetite (fruit vs. bread)

3) Appeal to power and glory (be like God vs. Have all worlds kingdoms)
Satan's temptation of Christ is a
"Matter of comfort to all the saints. In the temptation of Christ it appears, that our enemy is subtle, spiteful, and very daring in his temptations; but it appears withal, that he is not invincible. Though he is a strong man armed, yet the Captain of our salvation is stronger than he. Matthew 4:1
Note that Jesus is tempted immediately after a great revelation and testimony by God the Father about who He is and how the Father feels about Him. God may often allow Satan to tempt us immediately after a high point in our lives as a way of both humbling and testing our reliance upon the Spirit of God. Prhaps God was also showing us that the best inner defense against the attacks of the devil is to remember our sonship in the family of God.
Jesus was tempted while he was alone in the wilderness. A place of solitude is perfect for spending time with the Lord, but it is also a perfect opportunity for Satan to attack. We must be on our guard when we are alone and Satan has opportunities to make our thoughts wander, often followed by deeds which we would NEVER do if we were in the presence of others. Even in prayer, how often have our thoughts been pulled aside to other things besides the Lord?
Jesus was led by the Spirit to be tempted. God will never to do this to us (James 1:13). God led Jesus to this in order to show Satan that He was defeated. Jesus was not able to give into that temptation and sin. Such is not the position of believers. Our response should be to pray that we will not be lead into temptation (Matt 6:13). Cetainly God will never tempt us, only our own lusts and desires (James 1:14). God may allow us to be tempted for purpose of testing, but it is not something we should desire. If God leads us there, then we need to depend on Him, but we should not tempt Satan to tempt us, for God may very well leave us to our own strength at that point. Satan is not to be taken lightly.
Matthew 4:2
Jesus only became hungry AFTER 40 days and 40 nights without food? Clearly He is no ordinary man.
Matthew 4:3
Notice the timing of Satan and his temptation. He did not tempt Jesus while he was in the desert for forty days, only after. One of Satan's attacks is to attempt to take advantage of our outward condition. He watches carefully for what opportunities present themselves. What about a man whose family is starving - is it OK for him to steal to keep them from dying? What should he do? Our outward condition is no excuse to go against the commands and the will of God. As Christians, then, we must be aware of others needs around us and make sure we do what we can to help them.
Note secondly the method of attack:
1) He attempts to cause Jesus to question His relationship to the Father, His Sonship. He wants Jesus to question the goodness of God in leaving Him in this position. The Spirit testifies that we are God's children (Romans 8:16), while Satan, the accuser of the brethren, constantly refutes the claim.
2) Satan uses our physical conditions and circumstances to attempt to make us believe that God has left us, does not really love us, is not really good. When a crisis arrives, we MUST work to see Satan's role and refute him.
3) The Devil aims to shake our faith in the word of God, and bring us to question the truth of that. He did it to Adam and Eve, he tries it here with Jesus. God had just said "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.", and yet Satan says "If You are the Son of God...". If we ever question any part of the Word of God, we are giving Satan an opportunity.
4) Satan wants us to act based on our own will, not that of God. Notice that he is crafty in that he tempts Jesus to do something that He has the power to do. Just because we CAN do something, does not mean that we SHOULD. How subtle it is for him to get us to do something Godly against the will of God! Satan wanted Jesus to act on His own. He does not say, Pray to your Father that he would turn them into bread; but command it to be done. We must likewise be careful not to rely on our own desires, even good ones, or our own abilities, even our spiritual gifts, to do things which are not motivated by the will of God. |

Part 2 - Matthew 4:4-6

Jesus responds with Scripture. Why? Being God, the author of all Scripture, Jesus certainly had it within himself to answer the devil without quoting from the Scriptures. He did this as an example to us, who are not God, for how to deal with Satan's temptations.
Jesus reponds from (Deuteronomy 8:3) and following. He likens his plight in the desert to that of Israel in the wilderness - 40 days vs. 40 years - coincidence? Israel was an example of a rebellious son, Jesus is the perfect Son.
Jesus had just gone 40 days without hunger. Clearly the Father had supplied His need for that time. why should he begin to distrust now that He is hungry. Here is a another lesson for us - we must remember what God has done for us in the past, sometimes the very recent past, and not let Satan make us forget or doubt God's continued care for us. It is far better to live on meager amounts provided by god than to live on plenty supplied through our own sinful pursuits.
Matthew 4:5
Satan's 2nd temptation teaches us some more about him and his ways. Note that he moves from the realm of personal need to popular power. Where the 1st temptation was alone in the wilderness, the 2nd is in the greatest city of the land, in the most prominent place. The first temptation appealed to the necessities of life, the 2nd to the desires for fame.
There is no place where we can consider ourselves safe from Satan's reach. Adam was tempted in a Holy Garden, Jesus in a Holy City. What holy place do we consider off limits to Satan?
Places of prominence are places of greater danger as they carry greater responsibility and often greater pride in our own abilities. While it is good for us to desire to do lofty work, we must let God be the one who leads us to do it, provides the way, and gets the credit. Otherwise we prepare ourselves for a fall. Note also that the higher we are, the more costly can be that fall.
Matthew 4:6
Satan is still attempting to question the goodness and the truthfulness of God. He still says "If You are the Son of God", yet Satan does make some changes in his second attack.
Satan begins to use the scriptures. Since Jesus responded with Scripture to his 1st attempt, he now uses scripture to tempt him a second time. However, he purposely did not quote (Psalm 91:11-12) accurately. He left out an important phrase, "in all Your ways." According to the psalmist, a person is protected only when he is following the Lord's will. For Jesus to cast Himself down from the pinnacle of the temple in some dramatic display to accommodate Himself to the people's thinking would not have been God's will, and hence the promise would be null and void. Satan will twist the truth, or leave out important points in order to trap us. He is crafty. We must be wary. We must know the Scriptures, be willing to search them for truth, and follow them once we have found it. We cannot be too quick to follow. Belive in no man, but believe in what the Spirit of God reveals to you. Once He has done so, do NOT neglect to follow it.
Satan also utilizes historical prophecy in tempting Jesus that "thou art that Messenger, that Angel of the covenant, that should suddenly come to the temple" (Mal. 3:1). While Jesus following Satan's temptation would have been valid fulfillment of prophecy, it was not the way in which God intended it to happen. (Matthew 21:12).
Satan could not cast Jesus down. Satan's power is limited. He cannot make us sin. All he can do is entice us, tempt us. The sinning is up to us (James 1:14-15). For believers, temptation can be resisted (1 Corinthians 10:13). We must remember, however that just because the Holy Spirit gives us the power to resist temptation and flee sin, that we need to not be presumptuous. As Matthew Henry puts it:
Nor are any extremes more dangerous than those of despair and presumption, especially in the affairs of our souls. Some who have obtained a persuasion that Christ is able and willing to save them from their sins, are then tempted to presume that he will save them in their sins. Thus when people begin to be zealous in religion, Satan hurries them into bigotry and intemperate heats.

Dear fellow, these are not intellectual exercises or academic processes. Let me explain: The original question was 'How do you abide in Christ?' (not, "what is the theory behind abiding?") My answer was that various willing actions of faith (submitting to the commands of Christ) would produce (sorry, bear) fruit. Your note indicated that faith, obedience, fellowship and sharing the gospel were fruit of the Holy Spirit, that we had no volition in the matter. Your above answer makes it clear that you believe salvation has little to do with life on earth. All our works are only a result of God's election. We indeed become merely puppets. This sounds so much like 'karma' that it is eerie. Are we simply products of the 'fate' that God decided. In the same way we credit Adam with willful sin (or was he just a tool to bring sin to mankind), give us all a little credit for abstaining from sin after we come to know Jesus (post-salvation grace and works). Apparently, 'proper understanding" of James is that he was wrong, works are not essential. I keep talking about how to serve Jesus here, now, in our present state, in the world we now occupy, and you keep answering in nebulous, prehistoric, and eschatological terminology, quoting dead people that agree with your doctrinal leanings. "To abide in Christ...is to have no known sin unjudged and unconfessed..." Does this mean that if you don't know it, it's not sin? Do you actually know anyone who has correctly judged and confessed every one of his sins? I haven't yet met such a person (except maybe in his own mind). Again, God initiated our walk in Christ by sending the gift of faith, but desires that we choose to continue that walk from our volition. He sent His Spirit to help us, and comfort us, and encourage us. Thank You, Jesus! |

According to The Urantia Book, the four and 20 elders are as follows: Onagar, Mansant, Onamonalonion, Orlandof,Porshunta, Singangton, Fantad, Orvonon, Adam, Eve, Enock, Moses, Elijah, Machiventa Melchisedek, John the Baptist, 1-2-3 the First. Seats 17-18-19 and 20 are not permanantly occupied. They are temporarily filled by the unanimous consent of the sixteen permanent members, being kept open for later assignment to ascending mortals from the present post-Jesus age on Earth. Numbers 21-22-23 and 24 are likewise temporatily filled while being held in reserve for the great teachers of other and subsequest ages which undoubtedly will follow the present age. I can think of two posiblities.
1) Less than 128 years (and probably not too much less than that).
When Adam and Eve left Eden, they had Abel and Cain. When Adam was 130 Years old, they had Seth.
2) Who really knows? It could be that they didn't start counting Adam and Eve's age until after they left Eden (after all they didn't age in Eden) so it could be they had Seth 180 years after leaving and had abel the first year upon being forced out.
I tend to believe the second option but really can't say for sure. |

Were there any other people in the beginning besides Cain, Adam, and Eve? Of course, I am omitting the slain Abel. Genesis mentions that whoever slays Cain will reap the Lord's vengeance sevenfold. But it doesn't say anything about anyone else being around to slay him. Am I missing something? |

It is pure speculation to consider how many other people may have been around, but there are a number of indications that there were others. There are many people whose existence is indicated in Scripture but whom we know little or nothing about. For example, King David had a son named Nathan, who was identified as an ancestor of Jesus in Luke's genealogy, but I don't think there is any mention of him in the Old Testament. Likewise, it is apparent that Adam and Even (as well as their descendents) probably had many children who are not mentioned by name. Those whose lineage has significance for other Biblically related events are listed. God was selective in what he included in the Scriptures. |

This is a fascinating question for fantasy, but there is really nothing clear about it in Scripture. Since any other story one may find is simply a story, we have no way of knowing. If Adam and Eve were there a long time, however, it brings up all sorts of difficulties that the Scriptures do not address. For example, the command to be fruitful and multiply was given from the beginning, so what became of the children born before the fall. They would not have inherited original sin (so would presumably remain sinless unless they foolishly ate of the fruit as well). What would have become of them? Are the males the "Sons of God" (adopted by God since they couldn't be under Adam's authority)? You see how this leads to complete abiblical fantasy. If left without recognition of its lack of root in any direct truth, this kind of speculation could open the way to all sorts of gruesome heresy (Christ merely a "Son of God" rather than the one who "was with God in the beginning" and "through whom all things were made". I do not suggest it is forbidden to fantasize on the possibilities of this or other such questions (as I obviously have), but such fantasy should never be mistaken as theology, doctrine, or an actual answer to such a question.
The real answer is, "We don't know how long they were there." It was either a very short time, or God decided that it was not important for us to know in this earthly life about the interim. |
