Was everything really created in 7 days
Gen 1:2
Actually 6 days, the Bible says in
(Gen 1:1 KJV) In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

The first chapter of Genesis tells us day by day what was made, ending each time with and the evening and the morning was (x) for the number of the day.

God did not give a name to each of the first 6 days only a number, he did give a name to the 7th day he named it the Sabbath day.

Now last verse in Ch. 1
(Gen 1:31 KJV) And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Notice it says God saw every thing that he had made, and it was VERY GOOD…

(Gen 2:1 KJV) Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

(Gen 2:2 KJV) And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
(Gen 2:3 KJV) And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

  Which day is number seven?
Ex 20:10
Can God count correctly? Of course, but it is amazing how many people seem to believe that a law carved in stone -- to oberseve the Seventh Day at the Sabbath -- has been transubstantiated into the first day!

Must Christians keep the Sabbath today?
Ex 20:8
See Luke 6:1-11. Yes, Jesus insisted that some principles take precedence over others. Doing good on the Sabbath did not offend God nor did it violate the spitit of the law.
  Sabbath laws....do? or don't?

Are the Sabbath laws binding on Christians today? Many reformationists as well as seventh day adventists believe that they are. Is this a biblical view point? Or tradition of man?
  Sabbath laws....do? or don't?
Col 2:16
Are the Sabbath laws binding on Christians today?
. . . We believe the Old Testament regulations governing Sabbath observances are ceremonial, not moral, aspects of the law. As such, they are no longer in force, but have passed away along with the sacrificial system, the Levitical priesthood, and all other aspects of Moses' law that prefigured Christ. . . . Here are the reasons we hold this view.
. . . In Colossians 2:16-17, Paul explicitly refers to the Sabbath as a shadow of Christ, which is no longer binding since the substance (Christ) has come. It is quite clear in those verses that the weekly Sabbath is in view. The phrase "a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day" refers to the annual, monthly, and weekly holy days of the Jewish calendar (cf. 1 Chronicles 23:31; 2 Chronicles 2:4; 31:3; Ezekiel 45:17; Hosea 2:11). If Paul were referring to special ceremonial dates of rest in that passage, why would he have used the word "Sabbath?" He had already mentioned the ceremonial dates when he spoke of festivals and new moons.
. . . The Sabbath was the sign to Israel of the Mosaic Covenant (Exodus 31:16-17; Ezekiel 20:12; Nehemiah 9:14). Since we are now under the New Covenant (Hebrews 8), we are no longer required to observe the sign of the Mosaic Covenant.
. . . The New Testament never commands Christians to observe the Sabbath.
. . . In our only glimpse of an early church worship service in the New Testament, the church met on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7).
. . . Nowhere in the Old Testament are the Gentile nations commanded to observe the Sabbath or condemned for failing to do so. That is certainly strange if Sabbath observance were meant to be an eternal moral principle.
. . . There is no evidence in the Bible of anyone keeping the Sabbath before the time of Moses, nor are there any commands in the Bible to keep the Sabbath before the giving of the law at Mt. Sinai.
. . . When the Apostles met at the Jerusalem council (Acts 15), they did not impose Sabbath keeping on the Gentile believers.
. . . The apostle Paul warned the Gentiles about many different sins in his epistles, but breaking the Sabbath was never one of them.
. . . In Galatians 4:10-11, Paul rebukes the Galatians for thinking God expected them to observe special days (including the Sabbath).
. . . In Romans 14:5, Paul forbids those who observe the Sabbath (these were no doubt Jewish believers) to condemn those who do not (Gentile believers).
. . . The early church fathers, from Ignatius to Augustine, taught that the Old Testament Sabbath had been abolished and that the first day of the week (Sunday) was the day when Christians should meet for worship (contrary to the claim of many seventh-day sabbatarians who claim that Sunday worship was not instituted until the fourth century).
. . . Sunday has not replaced Saturday as the Sabbath. Rather the Lord's Day is a time when believers gather to commemorate His resurrection, which occurred on the first day of the week. Every day to the believer is one of Sabbath rest, since we have ceased from our spiritual labor and are resting in the salvation of the Lord (Hebrews 4:9-11).
. . . So while we still follow the pattern of designating one day of the week a day for the Lord's people to gather in worship, we do not refer to this as "the Sabbath."

Was Jesus actually in the tomb 3 days?
John 19:31
Tradition has it that Jesus rose from death on the third day, being crucified on Friday and rising on Sunday. However, it's very possible (and even probable) that Jesus was actually crucified on a Wednesday, which was then followed by the 7th day of the Passover, which was a special Holy Day (see Exodus 12:16-18). He would then have remained in the tomb 3 complete days (sunset Wednesday to sunset Saturday, then on into early Sunday morning) before rising on the "first day of the week" -- the timing of which is clearly stated in the gospels and recognized by all.

Although this is contrary to the image that we often have of the events, John's gospel appears to indicate fairly clearly (in John 19:30-32) that the Sabbath after Christ's crucifixion was actually a special holy day (presumably one of those associated with the Passover) rather than simply the 7th-day-of-the-week weekly Sabbath.

This is not some wild new idea of my own imagination. There have been respected theologians who have advocated this, and I have heard at least one current and respected teacher (Charles Swindoll) advocate such a timing of events, as well.

Just as in the legend that has grown up around Jesus's birth (arriving in Bethlehem the very night of his birth, magi at the manger rather than a house or inn, etc.), there are traditions that have become treated as actual in the crucifixion story as well. They don't seem to me to be harmful enough misunderstandings to be fought against, but it's worth bringing out their limitations from time to time.
  Is Jesus God?
John 1:1
Your question: Can anyone show me any passages that show that Jesus is God?
. . . The following outline is taken from Baker Topical Guide to the Bible, Walter A. Elwell, (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 1991), ISBN 0-8010-2255-X, pp. 88-106. The Scripture references are far too numerous to include here. Also, if your friend is sincere, I would suggest he read (without the accompanying interpretation of The Watchtower organization) the entire New Testament, particularly the Gospel of John and the other gospels. As to your friend's unbelief, as Jesus said in Luke 16:31: "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead." Likewise, if they do not listen to Jesus Himself (the Gospels) and the Apostles (NT Epistles), they wouldn't believe if they were eyewitnesses to Jesus' resurrection.

  Apostles impossible?
Hebrews
My dear friend in Christ, I read with great interest your reply. I must respectfully disagree with some of the premises of your opinions on this issue. It seems that you start with the idea that we do not have apostles today, then move on to prove it. Regarding Ephesians 2:20, I agree, these ministries are the foundation Christ laid. I do not propose to re-lay, but to continue on in this foundational gift. In regard to 1 Corinthians 13:8-12, you imply that the 'perfect' has come, thus doing away with the need for spiritual gifts. Jesus is the 'Perfect' spiritual gift, and He has not yet returned. I cannot believe that you say the divided church as we know it is not in need of as many gifts of the Spirit as are made available. We NEED them, now! Unfortunately, many 'ministries' have made a mockery of these gifts, with their misuse, abuse, and just plain false use of them. These miscreants are no excuse for you to deny the Spirit, just encouragement to find their proper use. As to Judas, I meant Judas called Barsabbas. What about: "But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out..." Acts 14:14 NASB. And when Paul, number 14, is considered to be number 12, does he displace James or Matthias? I also have personal experience with divine healing, my wife was healed from cancer of the womb, and I now have two teenage daughters. Actually, I do not like 'healing ministries,' and think that most are spiritually arrogant, some even charlatans. However, I cannot discount that many are healed by faith in God. I do, as a matter of fact, believe that one can be 'slain in the Spirit,' but think that the popular 'mass-slayings' are false, an abuse of showmanship and emotional manipulation.

I am part of a healthy, well-balanced church. Many speak in tongues and (gasp!) prophesy. However, in our defense, I assure you that "...all things be done properly and in an orderly manner." 1 Corinthians 14:40 NASB. You may have never experienced this, but it IS possible. (Please note that stating that something cannot happen because you have not seen it is spiritual bigotry) My friend, you cannot make your assumptions based on the how many people abuse the gifts. After all, if every lemming jumped off the cliff, there would be no more lemmings. Obviously, some lemmings are not totally stupid :-)

If you have never been to a 'spirit-filled' church that was orderly, respectable, responsible and balanced, come to Yokohama some time.

  Part 2 Apologetics?
Matt 11:13
  Part 2

APOSTLE (Gk. (apostolos,) a "delegate"). One sent with a special message or commission. In this sense the word is used in the LXX (1KI 14:6; ISA 18:2), and in the NT: JOH 13:16, "Neither is one (who is sent) (apostle) greater than the one who sent him"; 2CO 8:23; PHI 2:25, where persons sent out by churches on special errands are called their (apostles,) or messengers. In HEB 3:1 Jesus is called "the (Apostle) and High Priest of our confession." (New Unger's Bible Dictionary)
Apostle in the New Testament seems to be divided into 3 categories. 1) Jesus, 2) The Apostles to the Lamb, 12 in number, Matthias replaced Judas Iscariot. This is the only 'replacement' recorded in the Bible. 2) 'Post-Ascension apostles, messengers between the churches. Not 'Big-shots' from whom healing and miracles continuously 'radiated,' but servants. I believe this lasy category of apostle is still valid, but often abused.

As to Judas, I meant Judas called Barsabbas, 'sent out' with Silas, Paul and Barnabas. (Acts 15:22) Regarding "Greet Andronicus and Junias, my kinsmen, and my fellow prisoners, who are outstanding among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me." Romans 16:7 NASB, you wrote, "As for Andronicus and Junis, they were not Apostles. You see I could be among the pesidents men however that dosent make me one of them." Please look at how the word 'among' is used in the Bible. It means 'with, together' and the usage implies clearly that the one party is included with the other party. What about: "But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out..." Acts 14:14 NASB. And when Paul, number 14, is considered to be number 12, does he displace James or Matthias? Rev 21:14
While I am talking about 5-fold ministry, please read "And Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, encouraged and strengthened the brethren with a lengthy message." Acts 15:32 NASB.

Friend, I also have personal experience with divine healing, my wife was healed from cancer of the womb, and I now have two teenage daughters.

After all, if every lemming jumped off the cliff, there would be no more lemmings. Obviously, some lemmings are not totally stupid :-)

Finally, I am not 'buying into' anything. All that I speak of I have experienced. (Please watch your assumptions) If you have never been to a 'spirit-filled' church that was orderly, respectable, responsible and balanced, come to Yokohama some time.

Why do we not keep the 7th day Sabbath
Col 2:16
The Bible tells us to remember tha Sabbath and keep it holy...we should do all our work in 6 days and rest on the 7th day. It never said which 6 days to work. (If I am wrong, someone please correct with the scriptural reference.) Neither does is explicitly say which day to worship. (Again, if I am wrong...)We are having this same discussion at church. I am of the belief that if you set aside at least one day for the Lord...give it all to Him, then you are ok.
Who moved the Sabbath to Sun.?
Col 2:16
The Bible specifically says on the seventh day. The nation Israel always kept the sabbath on Saturday. There was never any confusion over which day was meant. Who changed the Sabbath from Sat. to Sun.? No one changed it. Christians are not keeping the sabbath (meant to be a day of complete rest for man and beast). Rather we celebrate Sunday as the Lord's Day. It has nothing whatever to do with the Sabbath. I thought I covered all this in my previous answer, "Are the Sabbath laws binding on Christians," JVH0212, 03-27-2001.

. . . I wrote in part:
. . . "The New Testament never commands Christians to observe the Sabbath."

. . . The burden of proof to refute this lies with the reader. If the NT specifically commands Sabbath observance by Christians, then let someone come forth with a clear verse of Scripture. Show us the book, chapter and verse where Sabbath keeping by Christians is commanded in the NT. Remember most of the contents of the four gospels took place under the old system of the Mosaic law, before Christ died, was buried and resurrected and before the Church age, the age of Grace was ushered in.

. . . Please read the entire posting for the details.
  Sabbath laws....do? or don't?
Col 2:16
I did not mean to mislead anyone. I am sorry for the fact that I inadvertently failed to say that my answer, to which you refer, was not authored by me, but is a quote written by John MacArthur, host of the Grace To You radio broadcast.

. . . Another excellent quote on the subject comes from the note at Matt 12:1 in the New Scofield Reference Bible, Oxford, 1967, part of which I present here. (The entire summary footnote on the subject of the Sabbath is well worth reading.) I quote:

. . . The Sabbath "was observed by complete rest (Ex 35:2-3)...Apart from maintaining the continued burnt offering and its connection with the annual feasts, the seventh-day Sabbath was never made a day of sacrifice, worship, or any manner of religious service. It was simply and only a day of complete rest for man and beast, a humane provision for man's needs." Bear in mind, Scofied is not referring to any tradition of man, but only to what the Bible actually SAYS about God's institution of the seventh-day Sabbath in the Mosaic Law.
Why do we not keep the 7th day Sabbath
Col 2:16
Dear TerryM, If I get the gist of your note correctly, are you saying that any day of the week is fine, as long as we have one day off? Just having the 'day off' was not the purpose of the Sabbath, nor is it worthy of the day of the Lord we presently enjoy. Serving God is the purpose. Now, if you and all your fellowship have Thursday off from work every week forever, you might have a case, but even then you would be limiting your congregation to being 'the Church of Thursday.' This would definitely not be mainline, in fact, it might be considered offline. It makes a lot of sense to adjust your faith life to serve God on Sunday, when a great deal of the rest of the planet takes a day off :-)

Who moved the Sabbath to Sun.?
Col 2:16
The 7th day Sabbath is a part of the 10 commandments. It points to God has our creator. The claim that we no longer have to observe it is nonsense. Christ himself observed it. He said He was Lord of the Sabbath. The Apostles kept it long after Jesus death and ressurection. And it is still binding today. God never changes, no shadow of turning. It is in the heart of His royal law, the foundation of His government in heaven and on earth. Read the book of James concerning breaking just one of the commandments, we become guilty of them all. As far as the day of the week. Look at your calander what day is the first day of the week? Sunday. what day is the 7th day of the week. Saturday. God created the sabbath day at creation. As a day of rest for man. To honor and worship the creator. The Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath.
Don't we all think that God knows what is best for us.

  Why the 7th day bent?
Col 2:16
Dear Rayteck, Is there a particular reason that you focus on the '7th Day Sabbath?' "For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." Matthew 12:8 NASB. Jesus spoke clearly of the hypocrisy of the supposed 'Sabbath-keepers' on many occasions. He spoke of common sense and holy attitude, both of which the 'leaders of the Jews' lacked. Jesus rose on the first day of the week, and we celebrate that and honor it in our hearts, not in a 'legal' manner. Sister TerryM said it best, "The Bible says give of the first fruits of your labor." This is an attitude of honor and worship, supeceding the letter of the Law, which has been clearly abolished. I, personally, consider Saturday to be a day of thanksgiving and preparation, but Sunday is His day, and I offer that day as a sacrifice of my heart, and worship and praise Him, Lord and Savior. Friend, your insistence on Saturday worship suggests a bent of religious legalism, rather that a humble conviction of truth. If this is, indeed, your Christian heart, and the 'traditions of man' play no part in your thinking, then God bless you in it.

What day would be the 7th day?

If you still don't understand, ask a rabbi. The Jewish people have celebrated SATURDAY AND SATURDAY ONLY as the Sabbath for three thousand, five hundred (3,500) years. This isn't rocket science.
  Sabbath laws....do? or don't?
Col 2:16
yes, Jesus the perfect Lamb of God obeyed every detail of Gods Law (Law-Gods Instructions)including the sabbath. He rebuked the oral law, not Gods Holy written law.
  Why the 7th day bent?
Col 2:16
Jesus kept every detail of the law including the sabbath. He rebuked the hypocrisy of "Oral law "not the "written law". Look up the hebrew word for law in your strongs (torah-Gods instructions) We as beleivers are not lawless people. Jesus is the living Word of God John 1. and He said if we love Him we will obey Him John 14: 15,23,24. Obey what? His Word.
Gods Holy Torah (Law) is not abolished. Math 5:17.
Sabbath is not a salvation issue. We are saved by grace. But we are to honor and respect Gods Holy Word.
  Why the 7th day bent?
Col 2:16
Dear fliha, You are correct that Jesus rebuked the hypocrisy of the oral law, but He also rebuked the attitude of Israel toward the written law. Our Lord spoke repeatedly to discern and obey the intent of the Law. Indeed, as a Jew living in Israel, He was obliged to obey the Law, but this was a matter of His heart. Look at the case of the adulterous woman; by Law, He should have been throwing stones at her. In fact, his words to the hypocrites saved her, and gave her new life. As the only sinless Person present, He had every right to 'cast the first stone,' and by Law, was bound to do so. He taught us a new law under a new covenant. A superior covenant. Even if you are a Jew living in Israel today, the majority of the Law has been done away with. He is the Lord of the Sabbath, giving us a new rest and a new peace. This comes not from satisfaction of the Law, but from a heart toward God, like David. The ultimate law of grace was active by faith since Abraham, and is now poured forth in the fulness of Christ. As Paul said, why would we want to return to be bound by something that no person was able to keep. Pride in keeping the Sabbath and a few other select laws does not make anyone righteous. If you feel better going to church on Saturday, convinced that your form of Christianity is superior, wonderful! Please remember, though, that attempting to 'keep' one portion of the Law binds you to the whole of it.

We are free to obey His commandments and to live in them.

Blessings and peace upon you in Jesus' name, charis
