You probably won't find too much on them because they were never found. As for what they are, the bible is pretty clear about that. They are listings of the Kings of Israel and their events. |

Hello,...In 2 Kings, the history of two kindoms is traiced until they were conquered; Israel fell to Assyria and Judah to the Chaldeans. In both kindoms God continually warned them about the dangers of God's judgement if they didnt repent.Mainely, this was done thru Elijah and Elisha. Repentance was their way out of judgment, but it didnt happen, thought they diffied God's commands |

Reading 2 Kings 17:7-23 will answer your question..
"7Now this came about because the sons of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up from the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and they had £feared other gods 8and walked in the customs of the nations whom the LORD had driven out before the sons of Israel, and in the customs of the kings of Israel which they had introduced. 9The sons of Israel did things secretly which were not right against the LORD their God. Moreover, they built for themselves high places in all their towns, from watchtower to fortified city. 10They set for themselves sacred pillars and £Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree, 11and there they burned incense on all the high places as the nations did which the LORD had carried away to exile before them; and they did evil things provoking the LORD. 12They served idols, concerning which the LORD had said to them, “You shall not do this thing.” 13Yet the LORD warned Israel and Judah through all His prophets and every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways and keep My commandments, My statutes according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you through My servants the prophets.” 14However, they did not listen, but stiffened their neck like their fathers, who did not believe in the LORD their God. 15They rejected His statutes and His covenant which He made with their fathers and His warnings with which He warned them. And they followed vanity and became vain, and went after the nations which surrounded them, concerning which the LORD had commanded them not to do like them. 16They forsook all the commandments of the LORD their God and made for themselves molten images, even two calves, and made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal. 17Then they made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, and practiced divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him. 18So the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them from His sight; none was left except the tribe of Judah.
19Also Judah did not keep the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the customs which Israel had introduced. 20The LORD rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them and gave them into the hand of plunderers, until He had cast them out of His sight.
21When He had torn Israel from the house of David, they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. Then Jeroboam drove Israel away from following the LORD and made them commit a great sin. 22The sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they did not depart from them 23until the LORD removed Israel from His sight, as He spoke through all His servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away into exile from their own land to Assyria until this day." (NASB)

Kiamlo,
Please excuse my first answer. I was thinking of 2Kings 4:42-44. when I responded. Any of Jesus's miracles raising the dead to life would have been more appropriate, such as the daughter of Jairus in Matthew 9. There are many typological foreshadowings of Jesus in the life of Elisha.

Greetings ladymcdade,
1 Kings 1:3 "So they searched for a beautiful girl throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king." [NASB]
"1:3 Shunammite. Abishag came from Shunem (2 Kings 4:8; Joshua 19:18; 1 Samuel 28:4), located near the plain of Jezreel in the tribal territory of Issachar." [Zondervan NASB Study Bible]
"1:3-4 Abishag (from Shunem, seven mi, or 13 km, SE of Nazareth) became part of David's harem and was involved in Adonijah's scheme to gain the throne. See note on 2:13-25." [Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible]
"1:3 Abishag the Shunammite. Abishag was a very beautiful teenager from the town of Shunem, in the territory of Issachar located 3 mi. N of Jezreel (Josh. 19:18; 1 Sam. 28:4; 2 Kings 4:8). Though from the same town, she is not to be identified with the Shulamite in the Song of Solomon (6:13)." [MacArthur Study Bible]
"Abishag.- ab'-i-shag, a-bi'-shag ('abhishagh, apparently, "father of wandering," that is, "cause of wandering," or "my father wanders"): The Shunammite woman who became nurse to King David (1Ki_1:1-4, 1Ki_1:15; 1Ki_2:17, 1Ki_2:21-22). She was chosen for the service with great care on account of her youth and beauty and physical vigor. She ministered to the king, that is, waited on him as personal attendant and nurse. She also "cherished" him in his feebleness--gave to him through physical contact the advantage of her superabundant vitality. This was a mode of medical treatment recommended by the servants of the king, and it appears to have been not wholly unsuccessful. She had an intimate knowledge of the condition of David, and was present at the interview of Bathsheba with David which resulted in the placing of Solomon on the throne. If that act had been questioned she would have been a most important witness. By reason of this and of her personal charms, she might become a strong helper to any rival of Solomon who should intrigue to supplant him. Adonijah sought Abishag in marriage. On the basis of this and of such other evidence as may supposably have been in his possession, Solomon put Adonijah to death as an intriguer.

Greetings again ladymcdade!
Sorry, I believe that I had the wrong Shunammite woman! :-)
2 Kings 4:12 "Then he said to Gehazi his servant, "Call this Shunammite." And when he had called her, she stood before him." [NASB]
"..The woman, name unknown, whose son Elisha raised from the dead (2 Kin. 4:12, etc.). Later when apparently she had become a widow, after seven years' absence on account of famine, in the land of the Philistines, she returned to find her property in the hands of others. Elisha's intervention secured its restoration (2 Kin. 8:1-6)." (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia)
"..where was a great woman; of great wealth and riches, of great benevolence and hospitality, and of great grace and piety; that feared sin, as the Targum paraphrases it; a woman of great credit and reputation on all accounts. The Jews say (u) she was the sister of Abishag the Shunammite, and the mother of Iddo the prophet:" (John Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible)

Dear Makarios,
Thank you for listing the miracles of Elisha.
Please allow me to add a couple things.
While Elijah participated in eight miracles, we know that Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit in 2Kings 2:9 and it was given to him because he had eyes to see Elijah being taken up in a whirlwind. By this double portion, Elisha participated in sixteen miracles and you have listed fourteen. How about,
Bread multiplied in 2Kings 4:43, this is separate from purifying the poisoned stew in 4:41 and,
Opens the eyes of men(restoring sight) in 2Kings 6:20, which is different than the giving of special sight to the king's messenger in 6:16,17.
In addition to the list you provided please add the two above and you have sixteen miracles for a double portion of Elijah given to Elisha.
Bless you,
Love Fountain |

Greetings Love Fountain!
Thank you for the suggestions!
You have listed:
* Bread multiplied - 2 Kings 4:43
* Restoring sight of men - 2 Kings 6:20
However, if you really want to get technical, Elijah also prayed that the Lord would strike those very men in 6:20 with blindness, so we should add..
* Strike men with blindness - 2 Kings 6:18
If we are interpreting these miracles on a 'strict' basis. But I realize, that if we do this, we wind up with a total of 17 miracles, instead of 16, which would show that Elisha had twice as many miracles as Elijah plus one. And we all know that 17 is a "prime number." :-)
But thank you, Love Fountain, for your input!
Blessings to you,

Greetings again, Love Fountain..
In my response to you, I stated: "However, if you really want to get technical, Elijah also prayed that the Lord would strike those very men in 6:20 with blindness, so we should add.."
I made a mistake here.. I should have said "However, if you really want to get technical, Elisha also prayed that the Lord would strike those very men in 6:20 with blindness, so we should add.."
If I singled out 20 of the best of all of my posts, I would still probably find a mistake here or there.. :-)

Then you state," * Strike men with blindness - 2 Kings 6:18 "
This is a double post. Striking men with blindness(2Kings 6:18) is the same as blinding the aramean army(2Kings 6:8-23) as you already stated.
Elijah did 8 miracles and Elisha was given a double portion of Elijah's spirit and performed sixteen miracles not seventeen.
I am confused why you brought up prime numbers?
What is a prime number and what does this have to do with Elijah and Elisha?
Isn't a double portion like saying 8 times 2 equals 16? The Bible says double portion, not double portion plus one.
Bless you,
Love Fountain

2 Kings
|

Greetings Love Fountain!
To reflect back upon our correspondence concerning the miracles of Elijah and Elisha, I first posted a list, although it was incomplete at first, of the miracles of Elisha.
However, we have added to it, and have come up with:
1. Parts the Jordan River - 2 Kings 2:13-14
2. Makes Jericho spring drinkable - 2 Kings 2:19-22
3. Sends bears to punish irreverent youths - 2 Kings 2:23-25
4. Floods ditches to confuse Moabites - 2 Kings 3:1-27
5. Multiplies widow's oil - 2 Kings 4:1-7
6. Shunammite woman bears a son - 2 Kings 4:8-17
7. Resurrects Shunammite's son - 2 Kings 4:18-37
8. Purifies poisoned stew - 2 Kings 4:38-41
9. Feeds 100 men - 2 Kings 4:43
10. Heals Naaman's leprosy - 2 Kings 5:1-14
11. Gehazi struck with leprosy - 2 Kings 5:15-27
12. Floats lost axhead - 2 Kings 6:1-7
13. Gives special sight to the king's messenger - 2 Kings 6:16-17
14. Strike men with blindness - 2 Kings 6:18
15. Restoring sight of men - 2 Kings 6:20
16. His bones resurrect a dead man - 2 Kings 13:20-21
When I suggested that we add "Strike men with blindness", I was suggesting that we 'replace' the entry "Blinds the Aramean Army" (2 Kings 6:8-23) with "Strike men with blindness - 2 Kings 6:18" because it seemed that we felt that the topic of "Blinds the Aramean Army" was a bit too broad and included two miracles instead of just one. If we do this, and include the miracle that you mentioned where Elisha feeds the 100 men (2 Kings 4:43), then we come up with 16 total miracles, instead of the original posted total of 14.
However, I came up with a total of '17' total miracles by Elisha, since I also count 2 Kings 13:15-19 as another miracle by Elisha; where he first assures Israel's victory after Joash, King of Israel, shoots an arrow out of the window, and then he tells Joash just how severe the victory will be after Joash pounds the ground only three times. So I would include "17. Limits Israel's margin of victory - 2 Kings 13:15-19", which brings us to a total of 17 miracles that were worked through Elisha.
Also, the number '17' is a "prime number." A prime number is a number that is not divisible by two numbers (cannot be the result of two numbers being multiplied together) except the number '1' and itself. We cannot use two numbers to come to the product of '17', and therefore "17" is an example of what mathematicians call a "prime number."
However, you have stated that the Bible states that Elisha received a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit, and not a "double portion" plus one. :-) You are correct: the Bible does say that Elisha (2 Kings 2:9) asked for a "double portion" (as if he were Elijah's firstborn), or inheritance, of Elijah's prophetic office. However, you are incorrect when you automatically assume that this means that Elisha will be able to perform twice as many miracles or be twice as powerful as Elijah. You see, just because Elisha asked for a "double portion" does not necessarily mean that the Lord will use him to make twice as many miracles (then Elijah) happen, and I strongly contend that Elisha did not have this in mind either when he asked for a "double portion." Elisha was simply asking to succeed Elijah in the fullness of all of his prophetic duties and everything that came with the prophetic office of Elijah, as a firstborn son would continue the office of his father.
Now, how many miracles that Elijah himself performed is indeed another question! You said that you came up with 8? I ask you your total, because I come up with 9! :-)
Here are the 9 miracles of Elijah that I come up with:
"The Miracles of Elijah
*****************************
1. Declares a long drought - 1 Kings 17:1
2. Multiplies widow's flour and oil - 1 Kings 17:7-16
3. Resurrects widow's son - 1 Kings 17:17-24
4. Calls down fire from heaven - 1 Kings 18:1-40
5. Sends a rainstorm - 1 Kings 18:41-45
6. Outruns a chariot - 1 Kings 18:46
7. Predicts Ahaziah's death - 2 Kings 1:1-2
8. Ahaziah's men killed by fire from heaven - 2 Kings 1:9-17
9. Parts the Jordan River - 2 Kings 2:1-8" (1)
So that is my conclusion of the miracles of Elijah and Elisha.
Blessings to you,
Makarios

There’s nothing mysterious about Mar 1:6. It’s just a description of what John wore and what he ate. The way John lived was just a reflection of a man that preached Jesus, and not himself. John the Baptist and Elijah had the same appearance, personality, characteristics, and message. 2Ki 1:8 So they answered him, "A hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist." And he said, "It is Elijah the Tishbite." Both Elijah and John boldly called the Jews to repentance. They were God pleasers, not man pleasers.

Dear Casiv...The verse seems pretty straight forward to me. A good description of John. Since you connect it to 2 Kings 1:8, I suppose you might easily say that John and Elijah had similarities. But I am afraid to answer since you may take us on another wild ride. As for 2 Kings 1:8; Does the fact that the 2 and the 1 and the 8 add up to 11, and therefore indicate disorder according to your earlier posts, mean that you want to make some unapparent point?

Enoch and Elijah 'raptured'? |

2 Kin 2:3
|

Dear brother:
In Hebrews 11:5 "By Faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death" Enoch is listed with the heros of faith.
He did not die, so we cannot say he was resurrected like the old testament saints after the resurrection of Christ. He was translated which I believe is the same word used in 1 Cor. 15:51 "...we shall not all sleep (die), but we all shall be changed" This reference is referring to the same time as found in 1 Thess 4:15-17 When our risen Lord will come for those who are "in Christ".
I think that it is significant in the matter which God took Enoch. Gen. 5:24 "Enoch walked with God : and he was not; for God took him.
There was no disruption around him, simply he was taken. The writer of the Hebrews shows more light on the subject telling us that he did not die, but he was translated.
In old testament types we notice also that Enoch was taken before God came down in judgement on the ungodly with the flood. Whereas, Noah was left on the earth and was delivered through the flood as a picture of Israel in a coming day who will be kept through the judgment of God during the Great Tribulaltion.
Why is Elijah not mentioned as a hero of faith. After all, he was a prophet of God at a time of great Apostasy. Which would remind us of this world after the man of Sin is revealled. He came with great power and with fire. As he came so was he taken.
Elijah as Enoch did not die, he was translated. "It came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven" 2 Kings. 2:12
It is also significant that when the Lord Jesus was transfigured that Elijah and Moses appeared there with him. Luke 9:-28-36 and Matt. 17: 1-8
The transfiguration is a picture of Christ in all his glory when he comes to rule in righteousness. Dr. Scofield points out that Moses is representative of those who have passed into the kingdom through death. In contrast to Elijah representative of those who have entered the kingdom by translation at the coming of Christ.
Dear brother, this is where I find myself somewhat puzzled. Could it be that Enoch and Elijah picture those who will be translated from two perspectives? Namely, Enoch went quietly into the presence of the Lord. Elijah was surrounded the the power of God which could point out the the great power and glory which we will share with Christ when he comes back in judgement on this old earth as seen in 2 Thess. 1:8-10 which associates his vengence with the time when "he shall come to be glorified in his saints..."V10
In our soon coming Lord

Enoch and Elijah 'raptured'? |
|
|
|
2 Kin 2:3
|
| |
Greetings, Robert!
Thank you for your response, my brother in Christ!
I believe that Hebrews 11 does mention Elijah: in verse 32. Hebrews 11:32 states "..and the prophets,", of which time would "fail" the author of Hebrews to tell of their faith in the entirety.. :-)
This citation of Dr. Scofield was truly excellent!
"It is also significant that when the Lord Jesus was transfigured that Elijah and Moses appeared there with him. Luke 9:28-36 and Matt. 17:1-8 The transfiguration is a picture of Christ in all his glory when he comes to rule in righteousness. Dr. Scofield points out that Moses is representative of those who have passed into the kingdom through death. In contrast to Elijah representative of those who have entered the kingdom by translation at the coming of Christ."
Perhaps Enoch was a representative of the Godly people (sons of God) of his time, since he was 'raptured' before the Flood, and was Noah's great grandfather. Either that, or Enoch still has a part to play in God's overall plan concerning planet Earth, as one of the two witnesses spoken of in Revelation.
But, as you have stated, both Enoch and Elijah did not taste death like Moses had, and it is made so that even if we die (like Moses), or remain alive (like Enoch and Elijah), we will be glorified as saints with the Lord, like Moses and Elijah were in the Transfiguration.
Excellent thoughts, my friend!

Dear Searcher,
Greetings in the name of Jesus!
My friend, in the pursuit of perfection and (self) righteousness, you are being very unkind to prophet ezra brown.
Elijah heard Elisha's request, and agreed (in the Holy Spirit) that it would be so if he met the condition of being at his side when he was taken. Elisha was there, and did receive a double-portion of Elijah's spirit as promised. He received the mantle of authority and anointing (chosen by God), the same mantle cast upon him when Elijah found him.
Mantle, spirit, authority, and ministry are all acceptable ways to express God's gifts to His chosen vessels. Let's not get too wrapped up in semantics or perfection, or you could be the next 'target.' :-)
Blessings and peace in Christ Jesus, charis |

charis, when twists Scripture, we need to point it out.
Mantle, spirit, authority, and ministry are all ... different. Do not interchange them.
The issue that Ezra Brown and this person have in common is they think it is a double portion of anointing ... again it is different.
I investigated Scripture and found what they said was not so. Semantics is important.
