Here are my thoughts on this issue. People look at it in several ways, some even make it a doctrine. I think it is a none issue because of what Paul says in v. 16 of the same chapter. "We have no such custom, neither the churches of God." The problem they were having was with the temple prostitutes from the pagan temples in Corinth. Some of the practices from these temples were being brought to the church, and that was because some of the new converts were from some of these temples. Apparently hair length was an issue, or the lack of it, since the prostituted normall shaved their heads.
But to answer your question, I believe Paul is saying that hair length should not be an issue, there are many more important things we need to be concerned about, such as lost souls, then how long someone's hair is.
Hope this helps. |

Are Christians commanded to eat meat? |

I know God ordained the killing of animals for food, but our way of doing it today is inhumane. Is it a sin not to eat meat? Are we commanded to eat meat? Did Jesus eat unclean foods and/or meat? |

The bible doesn't command us to eat anything. But it does say: 1 Cor 10:25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience' sake; 26 for "the earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness."
1 Cor 8:8 But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse. 9 But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols? 11 And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? 12 But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.
1 Cor.10:25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience' sake; 26 for "the earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness." 27 If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience' sake. |

Dear shorty, No, we are not commanded to eat meat. No, you can choose either way, but meat is a healthy food, and helps balance your diet. No, I believe that the Lord Jesus was blameless before His countrymen. A comment: What is a humane way to kill an animal for food? This is truly in the realm of emotions. Or, perhaps there is a Bible reference to animal 'feelings' or animal 'rights?' These emotions are humanist in origin, and care must be given when assigning our hearts to a non-spiritual issue. Blessings in Christ Jesus. |

Paul is specifically speaking about a man who married his father's wife. Instead of being appalled by this, the people of Corinth were bragging about it. How could someone involved in the church be committed to a sin that even the outside world considers abhorrable? It was interpreted as meaning that Paul wanted the man to be set out into the world (having his Christian church priveleges stripped) have him handed over to Satan to teach him a lesson about his sin (and the subsequent and self destructive pride that he had involved therein). His body may be broken, but his spirit will be saved, thus preventing him from that all-encompassing burning sensation that we know as Hell. This feeling, btw was echoed in 1 Timothy 1:20. Hope that helps, as this is direct from my NIV study Bible. |

Thank you KBurgee for your answer. It sure did help me to underdtand a little more about this verse. You wrote, "...to teach him a lesson about his sin ... His body may be broken, but his spirit will be saved, thus preventing him from that all-encompassing burning sensation that we know as Hell. I understood this to mean that by doing this, it would have helped the man to repent. When I get to some other part in my Bible and need clarification, I will post questions again. I will be looking forward to your answers then. |

Did God know Adam would sin? |

1 Corinthians

I was in a discussion yesterday with someone of the Jehovah's Witness faith. He made a statement that God could not have known that Adam was going to sin. If so, then why would God condemn Adam for disobeying. He said that would mean that God was not a loving God. Therefore, God did not know Adam would sin.
I disagreed. This would be limiting God's power if He did not know something would happen. I believe that God knew Adam would sin. But He gave him the freedom to choose for himself whether to obey God. Just like we warn our children against some things and tell them the consequences of disobeying, God does the same with us. God, as well as parents, have to follow through on our words or they are ineffective. I believe God is an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present God. It is us that fall short.
I would appreciate your views on this matter. |

Limiting God's power is like putting a fence around infinity. You just can't do it. God knew that Adam and Eve would sin, just like He knew Lucifer would crave the praise and worship that would rightly belong to God.
In order to look at God's relationship with us, like you stated, we must look at the relationship between a loving parent and His kids. What would be proven if God made everyone follow Him? The amount of free will that we would have would be severely diminished, and the amount of rebellion against God would (arguably) be a lot more than it is today, totally taking the God we know and love out of character. It would completely undermine Jesus' sacrifice, reducing its value to something worldly instead of something Heavenly.
When I spoke to a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses a bit back, they tried to convince me that God, if He was truly a loving God, wouldn't let people suffer; to which I responded "Suffering builds character" (this was before I was TRULY saved).
In fact, let's take it to another level: If Adam had not sinned, how could we have truly appreciated God's grace and mercy? Would we thank Him everyday for sending His Son to die for our sins? We'd be just as confused as a child in a mall who doesn't know where Daddy is. Just like a parent who wants what's best for his children, God will not force us to follow Him; He wants us to seek a loving relationship with Him. It may seem simple for us Christians, but sometimes it's great to sit back and think about how great God is and how His foresight is beyond our comprehension. Ask that Jehovah's witness this: If God didn't know Adam would sin, then how could He have foretold Jesus' coming? (Gen 3:15, for those who are taking notes, hehe)The point is that God knew Adam and Eve would disobey, just like He knows He's going to win in the end. That, my friend, is where our ultimate victory lies and others' failures will be ultimately determined.
If you ever have to deal with that again, hit 'em with 1 Corinthians 10:13.
I know I'm long winded, but how can you NOT be when faced with God's awesomeness? |

All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to THE LAMB THAT WAS SLAIN FROM THE CREATION OF THE WORLD. (Rev 13:8 NIV, EMPHASIS mine).
God had already agreed within Himself from the foundation of the world that the Son would be sacrificed on our behalf The plan was already there. He already knew all about each of us sufficiently to know who would respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. (Many Christians would believe that God had even assigned them.) He had already predetermined that our experiences and environment would be guided in such a way as to conform us to His own image as revealed in the Son. (See Romans 8:28-29 and Ephesians 1:4-6)
The revelation of God as the Creator of all men (and even adopted Father for many of us) in this case is significant. He did not choose to destroy, prior to existence, us who were not only born imperfect and unholy but who would cause Him great suffering and would temporarily mar his creation substantially with our evil practices. This is very different from the decisions made today by many parents who realize something is imperfect about a pre-born child and decide to end its life. What would I (or you) be prone to do if I knew, from the time of conception, that my unborn child was going to reject, violate, hurt and embarrass me as well as ruin a faithful reputation and honored lifestyle that I had built for myself? I know which decision God chose when he knew me (and everyone who has ever lived) millenia before I was even conceived. |

KBurgee's response was excellent on this. I'd like to add that Paul, in a later letter, encourages the Corinthians to receive one (who had repented) back into fellowship who had been previously spurned at Paul's request. (2 Cor 2:6-10). Many commentators believe this may well have been the same man. |

God knows everything, including the end from the beginning.
ISAIAH 42:9 "Behold, the former things have come to pass, Now I declare new things; Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you."
ISAIAH 44:7 "Who is like Me? Let him proclaim and declare it; Yes, let him recount it to Me in order, From the time that I established the ancient nation. And let them declare to them the things that are coming And the events that are going to take place.
ISAIAH 45:11 Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker: "Ask Me about the things to come concerning My sons, And you shall commit to Me the work of My hands.
ISAIAH 46
9 "Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, 'My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure';
ISAIAH 48
5 Therefore I declared them to you long ago, Before they took place I proclaimed them to you, So that you would not say, 'My idol has done them, And my graven image and my molten image have commanded them.'
6 "You have heard; look at all this. And you, will you not declare it? I proclaim to you new things from this time, Even hidden things which you have not known.
DANIEL 2
28 "However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days. This was your dream and the visions in your mind while on your bed.
29 "As for you, O king, while on your bed your thoughts turned to what would take place in the future; and He who reveals mysteries has made known to you what will take place.
MATTHEW 6:8 "So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
Here's the kicker, He knew it would happen and yet He still created us. Based on
Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
then the our falling is actually better in the end than if we hadn't. |

Are Christians commanded to eat meat? |

Origionally we (all humans and animals including the dinosaurs)were to be vegetarians:
Genesis 1:29-30 Then God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I
have given every green plant for food''; and it was so
Then we were told it is okay to eat meat as well:
Genesis 9:3 "Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant.
Then in Leviticus Jews were told not to eat 'unclean' meat (see Leviticus 11).
Christ fulfilled that ceremonial law and declared everything clean (okay to eat):
Mark 7
17 When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable.
18 And He said to them, "Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him,
19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?" (Thus He declared all foods clean.)
See also Acts 11
Romans 14:14 I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
Yes, Jesus ate meat. He ate fish:
Luke 24:42 They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish;
He also celebrated the Passover, which required the eating of a lamb:
Matthew 26:17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?" |

No, that is not exactly what I was saying. I wouldn't say that God "knew those who were going to sin and that punishment was planned for those individuals," but I do believe that God knew that Adam was going to disobey. He had already created a means of salvation for Adam and his descendants -- any who would repent of their opposition to God and believe in Him. This applied to Abraham (Gen 15:6, with commentary in Gal 3:6; James 2:23 and Rom 4:3,20-22), and it applies to us today.
I include myself among those who have brought God pain and suffering, but I know also that my salvation has brought (and brings) him great joy (Matthew 13:43-46 and 18:12-14).
Hell (also known as the "lake of fire" or the "second death"), which is the punishment that will be received, was prepared "for the devil and his angels" -- not for man. However, hell will also be the punishment of unbelieving men as well (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:12-15).
God, knowing that most people would reject him (which would result in their being merely "vessels prepared for destruction") did NOT choose to abandon his plan, but He endured such pain and rejection for the sake of showing forth his character of grace and mercy. He gave them the opportunity to live and prove themselves, and he endures their betrayal, rejection and arrogant defiance, knowing that he will eventually have to destroy them. This was done in order to show God's love toward those whom He knew would be converted (by the persistent conviction initiated and pursued consistently by His Spirit). (See Romans 9, particularly v.22) These would be brought to repentance, faith and love by God.
The blood of God the Son, who willingly sacrificed Himself for us all, has removed all sin but the blasphemy against the Spirit, which reveals such defiant unbelief as to result in a final rejection of the persistent, faithful and loving conviction of the Spirit and the evidence He brings to our attention. The one who utterly rejects the clear testimony of the Spirit has no hope of conversion.

Ok...I got you now. I like the idea of knowing that God, knowing that we will reject Him and cause Him pain, still loves us enough to give us a second chance.
Which brings to mind another question concerning the "lake of fire". Will those who will spend eternity in the lake of fire be tormented eternally or will this judgement result in a "second death"? I am a little confused on this point. |

That's not all you burn 24/7 morning, afternoon, evening, and night, 365 and 366 days a year of streight tormentation for ever and ever and ever...... and so on ever.... Once we die we have no more chance. Where the tree fall is where it lays. If we die in sin we live forever in the lake of fire. God bless you. |

The "second death" is eternal death. The "first death" (Gen.2:17) occured in the Garden of Eden when Adam ate the forbidden fruit-Rom.5:12 "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned"
When we hear the gospel call to repent and believe we should obey and not wait-we have no assurance God will give us a second chance-we must not fall into the sin of presumption. As faith is a gift of God, so is true repentance. We can not repent in our own strength but must be given the ability to forsake/turn from our sins with godly sorrow by the activity of God the Holy Spirit. When we disobey the gospel call we grieve/quench the Holy Spirit. "Today, if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion" Heb.3:15 |

The lake of fire IS the second death. Most scholars agree that the soul is eternal and that, therefore, everyone who is cast there suffers there eternally, just as the saints live eternally in heaven. Most of us have some discomfort with this, but discomfort is not good reason to disagree with what respected authorities are convinced that the Bible teaches.
Revelations 14:11 clearly indicates that the smoke from the burning of those who worship the beast will go up forever; therefore, these people, at the very least, will be there forever. Satan will also be there, but he will also be suffering -- not ruling.
There are some passages that seem to indicate the possibility of people's souls being "destroyed" in hell (Mt 10:28; 2 Peter 3:7; 1 Thes 1:9; Heb 10:39), but they are not clear or consistent enough to build a definite doctrine. (For example, note in Rev 17:8-11 that the beast is also "marked for destruction" -- while those who worship him will burn forever (Rev 14:11); it is not entirely clear that "destruction" means the end of existence (rather than simply removal from God).
Luke 12:47-48 appears to indicate that there are potentially varying amounts of punishment meted out by God. See also John 19:11 and Matthew 23:14 (also in Mark 12:40 and Luke 20:47). While there MAY be varying lengths of time spent in suffering, with the devil and his angels (along with those who actually worship him and his) being the only ones who remain there eternally, there is very little upon which to build this theory (theory, not doctrine).
It would be helpful to consider (and get further input from those who can discuss the topic much more knowledgeably than I can) the foundations for the doctrine of the eternal nature of the soul, and whether that could be affected by the fall. I will pose this as a question soon.

I believe that those who reject Christ's sacrifice in this life will be subject to eternal judgment. I am not going to comment at this time on what that judgmnent is exactly but here are a couple passages from the writer of Hebrews that state plainly that judgment is eternal and that it is a more serious matter than we usually make it.
If you have bible software on your computer or have access to any I would make the suggestion of searching for words like "eternal" and "judgment," but don't stop there. It is critical that you also look for the authors intent and the cultural implications as well as the original meanings of the greek, and arimaic words. I would suggest finding a commentary from a known bible scholar who doesn't read into the meanings but translates the passage and gives the historical context.
I hope this has been helpful for you. It is how I go about any question of intent in the Scriptures.
In Christ
God's Servant
Hebrews 6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,
2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
3 And God permitting, we will do so.
Hebrews 10:22-31 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,
27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.
28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
30 For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."
31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
