 Question:
How could Joseph divorce Mary when they had not yet married? They were only engaged to be married, so how can he have planned to divorce her when he found out she was pregnant? (Matt. 1:18-20)
 Answer:
According to my Life Application Bible notes, the engagement period is like the couple being married, except sexual relations were not permitted until the actual marriage ceremony. This "relationship could be broken only through death or divorce".
