 Question:
I am new to your site and am glad to be here. The question I have concerns Acts 2:38 about receiving the Holy Spirit at baptizing. There is a church I went to that totally hung on, believed in and practiced this verse. I would like any comments on this verse. Thank you.
 Answer:
Greetings and welcome to the forum,
Acts 2:38 trips up many folks, until they learn how to break down the verse.
Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The key to this verse is in the Koine Greek of the New Testament with regards to the word REPENT i.e. METANOEO in the Greek.
This is a compound word META and NOEO. Meta means to change and noeo is a derived of the word for mind or intellect. It means to have a change of mind about the person of Jesus Christ and put all of one’s faith in Him. This in essence is to believe the truth of the gospel
message of God’s Son. When this is done, that individual is automatically sealed with the person of the Holy Spirit.
Ephes. 1:13-14
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

The second confusing part of that verse is that some think that their sins are washed away by baptism because, (A) this deals with water and, (B) water gives the connotation of washing. The fact of the matter is the cleansing comes about because of the precious name of Jesus, God’s Son.
Acts 22:16
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and

wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Trusting in Jesus and calling out to God the Father in Jesus name: this is what removes the sin problem.
I John 2:2
Jesus and the work He did is what satisfies the righteousness of God on our behalf, not the fact that we get baptized.

I hope this helps, CDBJ
