NASB 1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
AMPLIFIED 1 John 1:8 If we say we have no sin [refusing to admit that we are sinners], we delude and lead ourselves astray, and the Truth [which the Gospel presents] is not in us [does not dwell in our hearts].

A classic is "The Mortification of Sin" by John Owen.

But if it is dead peoples' thoughts you object to, I have another suggestion. (It is also a lot easier read.) Jerry Bridges did a wonderful little book called "The Pursuit of Holiness."
