John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. |
| AMPLIFIED |
John 3:16 For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life. |

Rev 7:9, “After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; …”
One can turn the question around: If God is just and will not leave the guilty unpunished (Exodus 34:7), why will there be so many saved (unpunished) people in heaven?
The real question is: How can a just God let any sinner go free? How can He be just and then turn around and justify a sinner? How can God be just AND merciful?
There is a rational, logical answer. The Bible is not irrational.
First, God does not have to show mercy, but He does have to be just as Abraham recognized. "Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?" (Gen 18:25) Mercy on God's part is a prerogative not an obligation. God owes mercy to no one. He says, "I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION." (Rom 9:15)
But even though mercy is God’s prerogative, the question remains, how can He let a sinner go free and still be just? How can a just God punish some sinners and let other sinners off, and still be a just God?
The answer is that God the Son, sent by the Father who so loved the world, took the believing sinner’s place and received the punishment due the sinner for sin (death). So, sin does not go unpunished and God remains just even as he in abundant mercy justifies sinners.
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Rom 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
Rom 3:25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
Rom 3:26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
